Celebrate The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day with Kids Yoga

Celebrate Very Hungry Caterpillar Day

Celebrate The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day (1st day of Spring) on March 20th with kids yoga! This has always been one of my favorite books but I had struggled to come up with ideas on how to use it in kids yoga until I was inspired by the ideas shared by Yogaberries – yoga classes for children & families in Derby. in this discussion we had on the OMazing Kids Facebook page about great books to use in kids yoga

  • crescent moon
  • egg (child’s pose)
  • caterpillar (group happy baby pose – lay side by side with arms & legs up and wiggling)
  • sun stretch & breath (http://wp.me/p1t7TU-1T, includes link to a video clip & free sun printables)
  • apple picking stretch (in easy pose stretch one arm up & across to “pick the apple”. Engage kids imagination by asking “What color is your apple?” Repeat on other side. For all of the “food” items you can use toy food items or copies of the story prop printables. Whether or not I do this depends on the kids I have in the group. Some kids get overstimulated with too many props & others need the props to keep their attention)
  • wiggle like caterpillars on tummy around the circle to the next mat to pick the next fruit (pears). Repeat for the rest of the fruits (plums, strawberries & oranges)
  • cake (we did a bake the cake sequence similar to what I used for baking a pie in Apple Farmer Annie)
  • ice cream scoops partner pose
  • pickle (tense face like eating a sour pickle & relax)
  • swiss cheese (gyan mudra at eyes to look through the holes)
  • salami (woodchopper pose to slice it)
  • lollipop (mountain pose like a staight lollipop stick)
  • pie (seated angle pose)
  • sausage (rock & roll on back like a plump sausage)
  • cupcake (blow out the candle breath. For safety, we do not use a real candle….. just pretend)
  • watermelon (triangle pose – like the shape of the watermelon slice)
  • leaf (tree pose)
  • big caterpillar (use Hoberman sphere or hands with Balloon Breath to show the caterpillar getting bigger & bigger)
  • cocoon (roll up each child in their mat for Savasana – Note: it’s important to ask each child’s permission & be mindful of their sensory needs when doing this)
  • butterfly + affirmation “I am beautiful!”
  • could also do some butterfly breathing during Savasana with this prop (or a butterfly beanie baby or small stuffed animal). Place it on the child’s belly so they can watch it “fly” up and down slowly with their breath. (see pic of prop in this album on Facebook: http://tinyurl.com/cl8v7wo)
  • for added fun, have colored scarves and explore “flying” fast and slow using the scarves as butterfly wings.

The Imaginations: Fun Relaxation Stories and Meditations for Kids book has a fabulous “If I Could Fly” guided relaxation story that could easily be modified to fit a butterfly relaxation.

Healthy Eating tunes: Fabulous free tunes from the Eat Like A Rainbow CD by Jay Mankita. My faves are Eat Like A Rainbow, My Food Is Made From Sunshine & Sun, Wind, Soil, And Rain. This award-winning 10 song children’s album about healthy fruits and vegetables is a great teaching tool for kids and families, and is free to download from this site. The songs were originally commissioned by a grant for a joint project of the NY Coalition for Healthy School Food, and the NYC Board of Education (Dept of School Foods): http://eat-like-a-rainbow.bandcamp.com/

Tangerine with segments on a white background

When we do Very Hungry Caterpillar yoga this year I will be adding a fun fruit mindfulness activity.

  • Have a real piece of fruit for each child (Note: it’s important to know about any food allergies or dietary restrictions before using food in kids yoga. We will be using small seedless clementines for their “kid-friendly” size. Young kids may not be familiar with the word “clementine” so I will call it an “orange”).
  • Hold the orange in your hands with your eyes open. Look at the orange. Is it big or small? What color is it? Does it have any other colors or spots?
  • Close your eyes. Hold the orange up to your nose. How does it smell?
  • Feel the orange in your hands. Is it heavy or light? Is it bumpy or smooth?
  • Hold the orange in your lap. Imagine the tiny orange seed in the ground.  Imagine the sunshine that helped the orange to grow on the tree. How does the sunshine feel? Imagine the rain as it fell. How does the rain feel? Imagine the tree where this orange grew. How tall was the tree?
  • Imagine all the energy that went into this orange. Imagine the farmer who took care of the orange trees. Imagine all the workers who picked the oranges, who delivered them to the store and who work in the store where we bought the oranges.
  • Open your eyes and look at your orange again. Can we eat it like this or do we need to take off the outside peel?
  • Let’s take the peel off. And peel off a small orange wedge. (Note: be mindful of kids sensory issues when doing this. Some kids may be hesitant to touch the fruit unpeeled and may prefer to watch. After you unpeel the clementine you can put it in a small ziploc bag or bowl if needed for kids who would be more comfortable experiencing it that way).
  • Take a small bite. How does the orange taste? Cool? Sweet? Juicy?
  • Close your eyes and take another small bite of orange. Listen to the sound it makes as you chew it in your mouth.
  • Take your time. Be curious about this orange and how it is feeling as you eat it.

(adapted from a fruit meditation I learned as part of the fabulous Calm Kids online course I took)

Very Hungry Caterpillar story props and PECS activity

I made story props so kids can interact with the story and experience making the caterpillar eat “through” all the food items. I also created picture symbols to use in a Picture Exchange Communication (PECS) activity or as Aided Language Stimulation. The kids I work with benefit from tapping into those many different learning styles and kids with Autism in particular do well with having visuals to go with a book. Learn more about story props

BIGmack Very Hungry Caterpillar

Kids LOVE filling in the repeated line “But he was still ________ (hungry)”! I always have a BIGmack or other single message voice output communication aide available for kids who have limited verbal skills to be able to participate. I record the repeated line & they “say” it by pushing the button with their hand, foot, head, etc…..

In addition to the therapeutic yoga group, I also teach a weekly adapted storytime at the JD McCarty Center. One of our current inpatients is deaf so I am brushing up on my sign language so I can sign key words in the story. Here are a few signs for this story:

Perfect Square: a perfect book for kids yoga

perfect square cover with OMazing Kids logo

One square. Unlimited possibilities. One bright red square starts out perfectly happy. But then something happens. On Monday, the square turns orange, gets cut up and punched with holes. Though no longer a perfect square, it transforms into something just as wonderful…a babbling, giggling, clapping fountain. On Tuesday, the square (now yellow), gets torn into pieces and turns into a garden. Each day of the week, Perfect Square turns a different color & its “perfectness” is disrupted and each day it creatively turns itself into something new and different. On the last day, nothing happens to Perfect Square. It waits and waits. I LOVE that instead of waiting any longer for something else to change it, it changes itself!

If you have been following my blog, Facebook page & other social media pages for any length of time, you know that I love & own hundreds of kids picture books. There are lots of “good” books & then there are a few “great” books….. like Green Eggs & Ham with it’s message of trying new things, exploring feelings with Dr. Seuss’ My Many Colored Days, the creativity of Not a Box, the sensory extravaganza & fun of being made into a pizza in Pete’s a Pizza,  affirmation & the power of friendship in Agate, What Good is a Moose?, etc.

Perfect Square falls into the “great” category for the following reasons:

  • includes lots of early learning concepts (colors, shapes, days of the week)
  • large, easy to read text
  • lots of great vocabulary, descriptive language & action words
  • fosters creativity
  • lots of opportunities for kids yoga
  • has a great empowering messages of taking life’s “unperfectness” and making your own beauty out of it & the beauty of thinking outside the “box”.

Kids yoga opportunities in this book:

  • fountain (volcano and/or waterfall)
  • bird
  • flower
  • kite
  • bridge
  • river (seated forward fold)
  • fish (* for safety reasons I often do easy pose + a mudra of the sign for “fish” rather than the traditional “fish” pose)
  • mountain
  • window (could either do a group pose to create a window or could do star pose to make arms & legs like the windowpane divider)
  • the book then repeats back through all the previous items which gives kids great practice to repeat the poses they had just learned

Robot-Themed Kids Yoga Lesson Plan Ideas

Robot Kids Yoga Lesson Plan Ideas

One of the most frequent requests on OMazing Kids has been for “robot-themed” kids yoga lesson plan ideas.  I have searched for “robot theme kids yoga ideas” several times. There is alot more for a “space theme” than for “robots” but here’s what I found:

* Robots Slither by Ryan Ann Hunter [picture book with the following opportunities for yoga: cobra, bug, chair, bed, fish, whale, boat, rocket, star, tree, cat, skateboarder (warrior 2), breath of fire, dinosaur stomps, cross-crawl hike, up dog, down dog]

Beyond the Hype: kids yoga & wellness (not a “sport” or a “fitness craze”)

kids puzzle - hype free zone

Well it has been quite a week of “media hype” regarding kids yoga! Kids yoga being reported as the latest “fitness craze” for kids and that it is the fastest growing “sport” in the nation. Which then led other news media to turn it into a “sports vs. yoga” debate.

Unfortunately our news media has increasingly become about catchy headlines & misinformation.

Imagine if this same amount of coverage was given to accurate information about the positive aspects of well-rounded kids wellness activities?

Coming from the perspective of a Speech-Langauge Pathologist with 23 years of experience working with kids of a wide range of ages, abilities & needs, what drew me to yoga as a wellness activity for kids is how it taps into multiple learning styles, can be easily adapted to meet individual needs, can be done individually or in a group, is non-competitive & has research showing its benefits for kids with special needs (in particular for kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, anxiety, etc…). Here is what I consider to be a well-balanced approach to kids yoga (slide from my presentation at the Oklahoma Autism Conference – click on the slide if you want to see more info):

But kids yoga is just one piece in a larger wellness puzzle for kids. There are many things you can do every day to help kids learn healthy habits that will lead to a lifetime of wellness.

  • Making good nutritional choices
  • Learning to make exercise a habit. This could be any combination of physical activities that are suited for that child’s individual needs, abilities & interests.
  • Identifying sources of stress & learning stress-busting strategies
  • Practicing good dental health
  • Avoiding smoking, drinking and taking drugs
  • Making and maintaining healthy friendships
  • Learning positive social skills & how to handle teasing or bullying
  • Practicing kindness towards themselves & others
  • Always wearing proper safety equipment when playing sports, riding a bike or riding in a car
  • Making eco-friendly choices
  • Reducing exposure to violence in media, movies & video games
  • Internet & social media safety
  • Etc….

More Snowy Faves: “A Perfect Day” by Carin Berger, kids yoga ideas and a snowy playlist

“A Perfect Day” by Carin Berger from HarperCollins Children’s Books / Greenwillow Books is lovely! Beautiful illustrations with interesting details such as graph paper, receipts & handwritten notes hidden in the collage background. Short, easy to read text. Lots of opportunities for kids yoga & great descriptive language….. this book is going to be fun to use in OMazing Kids yoga & my work as a SLP at the Jd McCarty Center for Children With Developmental Disabilities! ♥  I bought my copy online at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/A-Perfect-Day-Carin-Berger/dp/006201580X

Five Snowy Faves – kids picture book gems

snowy book faves

There are certain kids picture books that stand out as “gems”. Those “extra-special” books that make your heart smile every time you read them. The way the text flows & rhymes as you read it aloud. The detail and beauty of the illustrations that are a feast for the eyes. The special life lessons and values that they convey. A fun repeated line that provides an opportunity for kids to participate in telling the story. Even the size and type of font, the feel of the paper and the cover add to the “gem” qualities of a great kids picture book.

These five books are recent additions to my vast collection of picture books and are “gems”:

a-flower-in-the-snow

  • A Flower in the Snow by Tracey Corderoy, illustrated by Sophie Allsopp. Luna and her polar bear friend (Bear) discover a beautiful gold flower growing in the snow. But when the flower fades, Bear goes on a search around the world for another to bring to Luna. It’s only when he returns home that the true strength of their friendship is revealed. This book has wonderful illustrations, large easy-to-read text, lots of descriptive language, opportunities for imagination as you follow Bear’s search for the flower, and conveys the value of true friendship. An added bonus is that there are lots of opportunities for kids yoga poses.

making-a-friend

  • Making a Friend by Alison McGhee, illustrated by Marc Rosenthal. Short easy-to-read sentences on each page, great opportunities for vocabulary, sequencing, part-to-whole & pronouns, several wordless pages allow for creativity and storytelling, fun hidden details as you search for the snowman’s face in several of the pages, and the story conveys two great messages: “What you love will always be with you” and the cycle of connection in nature (snow, water, ocean, rain, fog, frost).

NoTwoAlike

  • No Two Alike by Keith Baker. A story that conveys the beauty of being unique. Vivid illustrations, bold short easy-to-read text on each page, text from one page rhymes with the next, and lots of animals and nature depicted will provide opportunities to use this in a kids yoga class.

overunder

  • Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner, illustrated by Christopher Silas Neal. The dimensions of the book, sturdy feel and texture of the paper and illustrations are all unique. Lots of opportunity for prepositions, verbs & other descriptive vocabulary. The accuracy of the details and info about the animals depicted in the book would lend itself well to use in a classroom discussion. See this pic for yoga opportunities in this book: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=472679099449767&set=pb.174264525957894.-2207520000.1355009141&type=3&theater. (Also shared in the “Winter & Christmas” blog post linked below)

robert frost

  • Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost, illustrated by Susan Jeffers. A beautiful rendition of the famous poem brought to life by the detailed illustrations. Lots of wonderful animals to look for on each page and opportunities for vocabulary and inferences. A splendid way to introduce young children to poetry.

12 Days of Christmas Kids Yoga

The 12 Days of Christmas blog post

I have always loved the song “The 12 Days of Christmas”, especially the version by John Denver & The Muppets (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MX43ynMvm0) ….. the part where Beaker sings “me-me-me-me-me” makes me smile 🙂

So I thought it would be fun to find yoga poses to go with it. In my search for ideas I came across this fun video by Malissa Schwamm, E-RYT; RCYT at Northwest Yoga StudioPeace.Love.Yoga. in Las Vegas, NV. I saw a few other video ideas online but this was one was my fave!

Review: YoDaGaMo: Activities for Focused and Playful Motion!

YoDaGaMo: Activities for Focused and Playful Motion!

Product Description

This 10 card set of 4×6  cards plus 2 “helpful hint” cards is perfect for the classroom teacher, dance teacher, kids yoga teacher, parent, camp  counselor…anyone who spends time with moving children!!  These activities are ideal for the 3-10 year old set and can be easily adapted and customized for your group.  They even include recommended music. The cards were developed by Alexandra “Zan” Langstaff at the Hullabaloo Danceshop in Vermont.

Pose cards include:

  • boat
  • cobra
  • dog
  • eagle
  • magic carpet (savasana)
  • mountain
  • resting rock (child’s pose)
  • star
  • tree
  • warrior

The front of each card has a colorful illustration & the back contains ideas for yoga (including the Sanskrit name, a rhyme & creative names for the pose), dance (including music suggestions), games (including prop suggestions) & more (ways to connect the poses with each other). There are also “Helpful Hints” cards with additional ideas and tips for yoga, dance & games.

What I LOVE about this card set:

  • the 4″ x 6″ size is large enough for kids to see in a group setting
  • colorful & fun illustrations
  • printed on sturdy cardstock that will hold up well
  • organized in alphabetical order on a binder ring makes it easy to find and turn to the card you want. The binder ring can be opened if you want to remove a specific card (this makes it easier to hold up the front of the card towards the kids & then the teacher can see the back of the card)
  • full of fun, creative & unique ideas!

I have already used these cards for inspiration to try some new games in the Therapeutic Yoga Group for our inpatients at the JD McCarty Center. Many of the kids we have in that group right now are more difficult to engage and have some challenging behaviors so adding a new splash of “YoDaGaMo” has definitely helped 🙂 The cards have also given me ideas to build upon for class themes for our Inclusive OMazing Kids Yoga Classes.

Available for purchase on their website (w/PayPal):  http://www.hullabaloodanceshop.com/yodagamo-cards.html

Price at the time of this post: $16.00

I found out about these fun cards via a post on the Maria’s Movers  blog: http://mariasmovers.com/2012/08/06/yodagamo-cards-yoga-dance-games-and-more/
