Yummy Young Yoga with a Side of Green Eggs and Ham

Say! I Love Yoga with Green Eggs & Ham! (a fun kids yoga theme)

Green Eggs & Ham has always been one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books and I use it frequently in my work as a speech-language pathologist at the JD McCarty Center. It is great to work on vocabulary and prepositions & has a good repeated line that is perfect to record into a Big Mack or other single message voice output communication aide.

This year I found a new way to use this beloved classic….. it is perfect for kids yoga! The kids LOVED it during our OMazing Kids Yoga group on Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

Here are the poses & activities that we did:

The message of the book is great too… try something new and you may like it!

I do so like Green Eggs & Ham! Thank you! Thank You! Sam-the yogini-I-Am 🙂

  8. Another idea is to do a partner activity “Mouse in a House” pose (2 kids do partner “rooftops pose” + another child does “mouse” pose under their roof) – see a pic of how we did it at Educare today (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150653925641168.412140.322849581167&type=3#!/photo.php?fbid=10150653929801168&set=a.10150653925641168.412140.322849581167&type=3&theater)

  9. I love how you can get them so involved in the story! I bet the kids just have a blast!
Thanks for linking this up to the Suess party!

  10. So do you have the kids do the poses while you read the book? That sounds like a great way to get them engaged in the story!

    • Hi Jackie – Yes we stop and do yoga poses, breathing activities, affirmations, etc…. as we read that page in the book. It is an awesome way to get kids engaged to become part of the story…. and for kids with special needs it is an especially good multisensory way to help them self-regulate & calm as well as learn new spatial concepts and vocabulary. We often will do a coloring or craft activity to go along with the theme 🙂

  11. A new Green Eggs & Ham coloring sheet from the Seussville.com website: http://www.seussville.com/activities/GREEN_Coloring_2.pdf

  12. Another fun song: Green Eggs And Ham from Seussical: The Musical

  13. Another way we do “fox” pose in OMazing Kids Yoga: the sign for “fox” http://www.babysignlanguagedictionary-mysmarthands.com/fox_-_ASL_sign_for_fox.html – looks like the Gyan mudra around the nose

  14. Just found a great Green Eggs & Ham coloring page: http://cityguideny.com/columnpic/DrSeussColoringPage.jpg

  15. Wonderful! Love it! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  16. What fun – I love using Dr Seuss books in kids yoga classes. Here are some insights for finding your place and shining from Put Me In The Zoo. http://yogainmyschool.com/2010/07/26/put-me-in-the-zoo-old-favourite-new-lessons/
Thanks for all the links back to http://www.yogainmyschool.com

    • Hi Donna – I love Put Me In The Zoo also 🙂 Thanks for all the wonderful info you have on your website. The alphabetical list of poses is especially helpful. I did a presentation on Yoga for Radiant Kids at the Oklahoma Childcare Conference last Saturday and shared lots of your info there too. Having lots of free info online will increase the odds that folks in a childcare setting or school will implement yoga strategies in their setting 🙂 I’m still trying to spread info about kids yoga here in Oklahoma so if you could post anything on your FB page and website asking folks to come check out my OMazing Kids Yoga Facebook page(http://www.facebook.com/OMazingKidsYoga)that would be great! Thanks!
