Review & Giveaway: Cosmic Kids Yoga DVD

Cosmic Kids Yoga DVD cover & details

Product Details: Cosmic Kids Yoga – Series 1 DVD. Fun yoga stories for kids aged 3 to 8. (2012). Three fun interactive kids yoga adventures. Welcome to the world of Cosmic Kids Yoga – a world of happiness, adventure and fun. Wonderful storytelling combines with yoga movement to help kids have fun, keep fit and feel great. Engaging stories bring to life simple lessons for a happy life. All stories feature yoga-based movement for confidence, concentration and calm. Three magical 15-minute episodes presented by Jaime from Cosmic Kids Yoga:

  • Squish The Fish: meet Squish the Fish, a Californian surfer dude, who takes us on an ocean adventure and helps us learn about being independent
  • Parsnip The Cat: come on a circus adventure with a friendly acrobatic cat Parsnip. She’s a tightrope walker who teaches us all about staying focused by not being distracted by naughty Meldrum the Mouse
  • Kickapoo The Kangaroo: an exciting adventure in Australia with bright and brave Kickapoo the Kangaroo. She’s a picture of gentle confidence and helps us learn to say hello

Kids copy the moves that Jaime does and enjoy the adventure. Cosmic Kids Yoga stories help kids grow up happy, healthy and calm – and have lots of fun along the way.

List Price: $15.49

Cosmic Kids on Amazon

Where to Purchase: In USA & Canada, available on Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Cosmic-Kids-Yoga-Series-stories/dp/B009E8C05M (in Europe & rest of world: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cosmic-Kids-Yoga-Series-DVD/dp/B009VFZ49W)

Here’s what I love about this DVD:

  • Each yoga story starts & ends in the same way. This predictability is great for young kids.
  • Jaime has a high energy level and is fun and engaging. Who else could rock a pink adult onesie?
  • Great creative storytelling.
  • Incorporates familiar songs & other singing as she does poses. This is a great way to tap into multiple learning styles!
  • Cute animated backgrounds. I like the new under the sea background on Squish the Fish compared to the Youtube version.
  • Lots of repetition of poses in each story and across the stories. This is great for young kids.
  • Fun variations on poses! Great kid-friendly take on sun salutations. I got lots of new ideas for my OMazing Kids classes 🙂
  • Incorporates kid-friendly messages about being brave, focused & friendly. Love the message in Kickapoo the Kangaroo…. “get to know people before making a judgement about them”!
  • Brief Savasana relaxation at the end of each yoga story.
  • Easy to navigate intro screen on the DVD would make it easy for kids to select the yoga story they want.

Cosmic Kids DVD intro screen

The only suggestion I have for improvement is that the pace is a bit fast at times. The fast pace will be great to give kids a way to work off extra energy. However, it could be difficult for some kids with special needs or slow processing to keep up. Some kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders or Sensory Processing Disorder could become overwhelmed by the sensory input of the fast auditory input combined with an animated background.

Check out their Youtube channel to see all of their fun videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/CosmicKidsYoga/videos

I LOVE Jaime’s commitment to providing free full-length access to her videos via her Youtube channel! It’s a great way to get lots of kids interested in yoga. Check out this info from their website:

“In November 2012, children in 140 countries watched Cosmic Kids Yoga adventures for free. Each story is 15 minutes long – and, since we uploaded our first video in May 2012, more than one and a half million minutes of our adventures have been yoga’d along to. We are blown away by what technology can do!

We hope we can do this for many more years to come, and  will develop more stories for kids to follow for free, so that they can continue to imitate a mermaid going ‘ooh la la’ while they do a twist , and  strengthen their bodies by being a crab playing football.”

Beyond the Hype: kids yoga & wellness (not a “sport” or a “fitness craze”)

kids puzzle - hype free zone

Well it has been quite a week of “media hype” regarding kids yoga! Kids yoga being reported as the latest “fitness craze” for kids and that it is the fastest growing “sport” in the nation. Which then led other news media to turn it into a “sports vs. yoga” debate.

Unfortunately our news media has increasingly become about catchy headlines & misinformation.

Imagine if this same amount of coverage was given to accurate information about the positive aspects of well-rounded kids wellness activities?

Coming from the perspective of a Speech-Langauge Pathologist with 23 years of experience working with kids of a wide range of ages, abilities & needs, what drew me to yoga as a wellness activity for kids is how it taps into multiple learning styles, can be easily adapted to meet individual needs, can be done individually or in a group, is non-competitive & has research showing its benefits for kids with special needs (in particular for kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, anxiety, etc…). Here is what I consider to be a well-balanced approach to kids yoga (slide from my presentation at the Oklahoma Autism Conference – click on the slide if you want to see more info):

But kids yoga is just one piece in a larger wellness puzzle for kids. There are many things you can do every day to help kids learn healthy habits that will lead to a lifetime of wellness.

  • Making good nutritional choices
  • Learning to make exercise a habit. This could be any combination of physical activities that are suited for that child’s individual needs, abilities & interests.
  • Identifying sources of stress & learning stress-busting strategies
  • Practicing good dental health
  • Avoiding smoking, drinking and taking drugs
  • Making and maintaining healthy friendships
  • Learning positive social skills & how to handle teasing or bullying
  • Practicing kindness towards themselves & others
  • Always wearing proper safety equipment when playing sports, riding a bike or riding in a car
  • Making eco-friendly choices
  • Reducing exposure to violence in media, movies & video games
  • Internet & social media safety
  • Etc….

Multiple Intelligences: eight different potential pathways to learning

“It’s not how smart you are that matters, what really counts is how you are smart.”

~ Howard Gardner

Did you know that there are at least eight different potential pathways to learning?  So whatever you are teaching or learning, see how you might connect it with:

  • words (linguistic intelligence)
  • numbers or logic (logical-mathematical intelligence)
  • pictures (spatial intelligence)
  • music (musical intelligence)
  • self-reflection (intrapersonal intelligence)
  • a physical experience (bodily-kinesthetic intelligence)
  • a social experience (interpersonal intelligence)
  • an experience in the natural world (naturalist intelligence)

When doing this, also keep in mind and individual child’s sensory processing needs & preferences.

  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1479317845
  • ISBN-13: 978-1479317844
  • Product Dimensions: 11 x 8.5 x 0.1 inches

Where to Purchase: Available on their website w/ PayPal: http://www.kidsyogastories.com/%20lukes-a-to-z/ & on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Lukes-Australian-Animals-Alphabet-Coloring/dp/1479317845/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1357165586&sr=1-1

Here’s what I love about this book:

  • A picture of the kids yoga pose is in the corner of each page
  • The targeted vocabulary for each letter is in bold font
  • The font is large & easy to read
  • The alphabet letter is large but more faintly shown than the rest of the picture on each page. This will make it fun for kids to look for the letter (an easy version of a seek-and-find)
  • It’s a fun way to learn the names of Australian wildlife. Some are familiar (crocodile, whale, jellyfish, koala, etc…) but most would be new to those of us who do not live in that part of the world (brolga, echidna, goanna, numbat, quoll, etc…).
  • The 6-page Parent-Teacher Guide section at the end of the coloring book is a goldmine of great tips for setting up a fun & safe yoga storytime for kids. Gotta share this quote from the book: “Ooze creativity, imagination and abundance. Encourage each child to tap into his or her own creativity and imagination through movement and breath. Welcome quiet times for reflection. Pause often. Remember, it’s not the end result, but the journey where miracles happen…“. She also gives several ideas for extension activities. Giselle’s passion and love for kids & learning shines through :)
  • Lots of great verbs & adjectives will make this book fun to use in my work as a Speech-Language Pathologist (ex: a crocodile snoozing in the swampy mangroves, a platypus paddling in a murky river, etc…).
  • LOVE the combination of nature, alphabet/early literacy skills, coloring & movement….. what a fun way to tap into “multiple intelligences”! Add some Australian music & affirmations to tap into a couple more. (More info about this concept at: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/education/ed_mi_overview.html & http://comicsworkshop.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/poster-02-mi_actions-11×17.jpg)
