If you are looking for names of apps that existed back in 2017 to assist you in finding them in the Purchased area in the App Store, then feel free to look through the info below. I am leaving it up for that purpose and as a historical time capsule of apps that used to exist. Sadly many of these have disappeared.

{The iPad & the SLP in 2017} App List for SLPs ~ sorted by goal area ~ now includes over 900 apps & a list of 65 apps that are always FREE

My iPads are by far the best tools in my SLP toolbox. Best purchases ever! But an iPad is only as good as the apps that you load on it. I post on my OMazing Kids page every day about good apps that are either free or a great deal that day. I’ve also done several in-depth app reviews on my blog: https://omazingkidsllc.com/category/app/. I only post about apps that I have actually downloaded and tried and only post about those that I see as being either helpful in therapy, classroom or to parents of kids with special needs. There are thousands of apps in the App Store so it can be difficult to find ones to best meet our needs as SLPs.

I am in several SLP Facebook groups and see numerous posts each week asking “What are the best apps?”. So I decided to spend some time compiling a list for this blog post. The list is not all inclusive and is subject to change as apps are updated, new ones are released & others unfortunately disappear (a sad but true reality in the world of apps).

A few general words about apps:

* When folks ask for app recommendations, I suggest apps based on what skills you are wanting to teach (no different than when someone asks for recommendations for more traditional therapy materials). What tool do you need for the job? Even within a particular category, I don’t just have one favorite app. I have several faves depending what the specific needs are. And I often combine apps with toys and other traditional therapy materials.

* I usually avoid apps that have ads and in-app purchases since they are distracting to patients. Be sure to know how to adjust the settings on your iPad to prevent kids from making purchases & how to use it in “airplane mode” to block most ads. I also avoid apps that involve subscriptions.

* Guided Access: If you will be using the iPad with kids, then Guided Access is your new BFE (Best. Feature. Ever!). It can be used to disable the home button and lock the child into an app. Especially critical if you will be using the iPad as an AAC device or using it in therapy with kids with poor impulse control. * This list is based on apps available in the USA App Store at the time of this post. I may periodically add to this list as I get new apps but don’t have plans to constantly update it…. I’ve already spent countless hours compiling this original post.

* As I was creating the post I discovered several great apps are no longer available for purchase and others had even disappeared from the cloud (a good reminder to always check to see if an app is still available before uninstalling it from your iPad and to back up your iPad periodically by plugging it into your computer with iTunes…. I need to do this myself).

65 Free Apps for SLPs: a list of apps that have a history of always being free:  It’s rare for “good” apps to be free all of the time. App developers spend $$$ making their apps and keeping them updated. So we shouldn’t expect them to be free. Instead some periodically go “free” for a short time as a way for them to get some visibility. That’s why I post every day about apps that are either free or a great deal that day. So the best way to get good free apps is to follow my OMazing Kids page & crossposts over in the AppPeeps group. That being said, here are 65 good apps that appear to be “free” all of the time and are helpful for kids with complex special needs (the population that I serve as a SLP). The full versions of apps in the iDo series are all great for targeting goals for life skills, sequencing, functional vocabulary, etc. for older kids and teens. They have great video modeling and photos but because of this are large apps. I rotate them on/off my iPad based on specific kids I have on my caseload at any given time. {12 Free Picture Dictionary Apps} These picture dictionary apps are all currently free in the USA App Store. I found them while searching through the App Store to answer a question over in the Proloquo2Go For Professionals Facebook group. Always amazed to stumble upon nice free apps. It’s like going on a treasure hunt. Not sure if these are always free or just free for a limited time so get them quickly and check prices before downloading. The 3D one has cool vivid graphics. The GoPict! and Eureka Pic! series is helpful for kids who are older but still need picture support. A few of the words are specific to India but most are not. Yolaroo has several other free apps that I grabbed so tap on the developer’s name to look for those.
