{Review & Giveaway} Breathe In: Children’s Songs for Mindfulness and Awareness CD

Check out the fabulous new Breathe In: Children’s Songs for Mindfulness and Awareness CD by Lianne Bassin! All early childhood teachers, special ed teachers, parents, child psychologists, speech-language pathologists, kids yoga teachers & anyone else working with young children will love it. Such a fabulous way to work with kids on emotions, social emotional intelligence, social skills, mindfulness, empathy & affirmations!

What I love about this CD:

Unique catchy tunes, great beats, lovely vocals and harmonies & meaningful lyrics. Everything I love about Kindie music shines through in this CD!
Wonderful positive messages of affirmation, empathy & mindfulness. I wish every young child could have a CD like this to counteract all the negative messages they are exposed to in today’s culture.
“Peaceful Place” is especially calming. I have uploaded all the songs to my iPhone and will personally be listening to this one when I need a “peaceful place” break in the middle of my hectic schedule as a pediatric SLP.
I love the concept of “Hugging Words”….. definitely will be infusing this into my social skills sessions with patients!
The message of “Together We’re Beautiful” is especially powerful to share with kids with special needs.
There is a nice mix of upbeat & slower songs. From a sensory perspective, several of the songs have a strong calming drum beat that my patients with Autism Spectrum Disorders tend to respond well to.
Many of the songs have precious young kids vocals mixed in. Adorable!
All 21 songs are wonderful…. what a great bargain to have a CD packed full of this many fabulous songs and a free activity booklet with extension activities.

About the Artist:

New York-based children’s musician Lianne Bassin is known as a bridge-builder between worlds. A singer-songwriter since the age of 5, she has used her background as singer, early childhood teacher, and yoga instructor to create opportunities for children to learn mindfulness. Understanding the importance of cultivating awareness and appreciation of self and others in children of all ages, Bassin started writing a few guided meditation songs. After witnessing the overwhelmingly positive effects they had on her students, she began to write more songs and share her music with other classroom teachers and parents.

In February 2014, Lianne was awarded a grant from Rodeph Sholom School to record a children’s album focused on mindfulness. Breathe In: Children’s Songs for Mindfulness and Awareness inspires mindfulness as a way of living, helping children to pay attention to themselves, others, and their surroundings. Teachers, counselors, and parents are already using Breathe In to teach children about mindfulness, in a fun and engaging way. She hopes that you too can internalize the messages conveyed in her music, and help pass them along to the next generation!

Calming Young Minds CD giveaway

Product Details: A unique compilation of relaxation, meditation, guided imagery, blissful music, creativity, and yoga for children.

Whether you are a parent, teacher, day care provider, child life specialist, yoga instructor, or psychotherapist, we have made it is easy to use these CDs. Listeners are guided step by step through each section, although it is recommended that you listen to these CDs in entirety before using with the children so you can familiarize yourself with the content, directives and the exercises. Some tracks are active, some are relaxing, some yoga exercises conclude with an artistic directive. The background music and vocals compliment the yoga sets, but you might have some additional background music available while the children are being creative. It is important that you have art supplies available. Markers and large paper (18 X 24) are sufficient but feel free to add oil pastels, scented markers or crayons. You might also have paper towels handy for clean up. Make sure there is sufficient space for the children to move around…… you might even have cushions or pillows for the children to sit on. And lastly, enjoy the playful nature of the CDs. Although it is geared for children and teens, adults may enjoy it just as much! ENJOY!

lovely narration of kids yoga adventures. The narration is pretty detailed so these would be best used with kids elementary school age and up.
great combination of kids yoga, relaxation, imagination, guided imagery, creativity & art.
includes great positive messages of courage & mindfulness.

In case you are new to the term “Kindie”, it’s kids music made by independent artists. It’s totally unlike the mass marketed stuff you find in the kids CD section at large retailers 🙂

Ready for more amazing music? Kira Willey, award-winning Kindie singer/songwriter and certified children’s yoga teacher, has come out with her much-anticipated 3rd CD!

What I LOVE about this CD:

I am a huge fan of folk music for kids and Kira’s vocal and musical style makes you smile inside 🙂 …. I enjoy listening to it just as music as well as using it in my work with kids as a Speech-Language Pathologist & in OMazing Kids Yoga.
The songs would be great to use in any classroom, therapy clinic & yoga studio….. the songs have universal appeal.
Songs can tie in to specific yoga poses & the instructional book with lyrics and pics of each yoga sequence for each song is attached to the inside cover of the CD case. There are 13 music tracks + 9 bonus yoga tracks. The yoga tracks include detailed instruction from Kira with the music playing softly in the background. The pace of the yoga tracks is a little fast so I’d definitely listen to them and practice before trying them out with kids. If you are playing them on an iPad or iPhone, you could use the SlowTunes app to slow it down without distorting the song (see info in “Tip” below)
The music will appeal to a wide age range of kids (and even those of us who are “kids at heart”!).
Love the positive & upbeat message in each of the songs. Listen to the lyrics and you will hear many great built-in self-affirmations, positive social interactions & messages of taking care of our world!
A nice mix of upbeat/energizing & calming songs. The slower and mid-tempo songs tend to be my faves.
You gotta hear the 2014 remix version of her famous song Colors! So precious with all the kids singing along.

Tip: Many of the kids I work with have difficulty following quick instructions in action songs or are overstimulated by fast songs so I use the SlowTunes app on my iPhone or iPad to import many of the songs I use in OMazing Kids yoga & my work as a SLP. From there I have the option to play them in “slower” & “slowest” modes without changing the pitch or distorting the songs in any way (one of my new favorite apps! well worth the $1.99 price).

This kit is very well designed & organized! I love the positive message, awesome illustrations, quality narration, fun music, how many activities are included & that this was all inspired by the writings of an individual with ASD. What a fabulous example of self-advocacy! The best insights that we have into the world of Autism are to listen to individuals like Sarah who are able to tell us about it through their own experiences. It’s exciting to think about how easy & fun this would be to implement in any elementary school or advocacy event 🙂

About the Author:

Sarah Stup, a writer with Autism, discovered the power of the written word when she was eight. Until that time, because she could not speak, few appreciated just how bright she was or the extent to which she absorbed her lessons and environment. Ultimately, Sarah would graduate high school with honors, but it was from her first awkwardly written sentences that her dream of being a writer began.

Sarah was born in Frederick, MD, in 1983, and was diagnosed with autism at an early age. Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning its symptoms vary from person to person. Sarah’s disability is considered significant. She does not speak and has limited motor skills. Still, she writes.

From her cozy kitchen nook, she has written two books in two years: Do-si-Do with Autism, for children; and Are Your Eyes Listening? Collected Works, for adults. Sarah has also just released her Keepsake Collection, which includes Nest Feathers: A celebration of family, home and memories shared and Heartand Spirit: Words to comfort, inspire and share.

Although Sarah’s writings deal with the experience of autism, each also touches on universal themes like love, personal meaning and the need to belong.

Review & Giveaway: 2 Guided Relaxation CDs by Checka Antifonario & Shakta Khalsa

Product Description: Rainbow Walk (Fun, Peaceful Meditations and Relaxations for Children Ages 3-8) & You Are Made of Energy (Guided Meditations and Relaxations for Children Ages 9-14) are two new downloadable albums of guided meditations and relaxations backed by soothing and uplifting music to help children stay connected to who they truly are. Checka Antifonario & Shakta Khalsa collaborated on this project with the intention that these audio albums would be a lovely balance between communicating in a way that honors children’s depth and wisdom and giving them tools that are fun and totally relevant to their lives and interests.

Here’s what I LOVE about these guided relaxations:

Lovely calming voices….. I’ve heard LOTS of guided relaxation CD’s and the voice quality is very important for creating a calming atmosphere.
Awesome background instrumental music….. again very important for creating the calming atmosphere.
Good length for the targeted ages. You can see the length of individual tracks on the picture of the two album covers above. Very young children or those with short attention spans may do best starting with the shortest relaxations or you could just use a portion of a relaxation and build from there.
Each guided relaxation is full of positive imagery and positive messages.
I love that the Rainbow Walk album includes a Fruit Mindfulness activity! I love doing this with the patients I see in OMazing Kids Yoga at the JD McCarty Center. Please remember that it’s important to know about any food allergies or dietary restrictions before using food in a classroom or group setting. See this post on how I incorporate this type of activity.
There are no religious connotations which make these downloads appropriate in a wide variety of settings (I have to be particularly sensitive to this based on the setting I work in).
I love that they have made the guided relaxations available as individual mp3’s! This makes it easy for folks to buy one and try it with their own child or own setting before investing in a whole album. I also love that they made them available for download on a variety of platforms…. in particular iTunes since that makes it easy to directly download to an iPhone, iPod or iPad without having to be synced with a computer.

These guided relaxations would be fabulous for parents to use as part of a relaxation program for a child with anxiety, autism or other special needs, for teachers to use as a relaxation activity to center and calm their classroom & for kids yoga teachers to use as part of Savasana at the end of a class. And these guided relaxations are really “universal” in their use. There is nothing “kiddie” about them and would also be fabulous for adults to use as part of a relaxation break. I have them all loaded on my iPhone ready for just that purpose 🙂

I made some printable picture cards to go with these guided relaxations. I use cards like this as way to give the patients with developmental disabilities I see in OMazing Kids Yoga at the JD McCarty Center a way to choose a relaxation and to have a visual to set the theme. : Visual Cards to go with Guided Relaxation Albums from Checka and Shakta at RCY
