12 Days of Christmas Kids Yoga

The 12 Days of Christmas blog post

I have always loved the song “The 12 Days of Christmas”, especially the version by John Denver & The Muppets (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MX43ynMvm0) ….. the part where Beaker sings “me-me-me-me-me” makes me smile 🙂

So I thought it would be fun to find yoga poses to go with it. In my search for ideas I came across this fun video by Malissa Schwamm, E-RYT; RCYT at Northwest Yoga StudioPeace.Love.Yoga. in Las Vegas, NV. I saw a few other video ideas online but this was one was my fave!

Review & Giveaway: Namaste Kid Yoga Motion DVD

Looking for a unique kid’s yoga DVD with no distractions? Then the new Yoga Motion DVD by Namaste Kid would be a great one to get!

The unique thing about this kids yoga DVD is that it has no distractions in the background.

Just a kid-friendly yoga instructor on her yoga mat on a plain white background.

Lindsay McCoy’s positive, calm energy makes yoga fun and approachable. It’s like having a personal yoga instructor in your child’s living room, your classroom or your therapy clinic/office.

Yoga Motion helps kids develop core strength, balance, and confidence. You can even use the relaxation chapters as part of your child’s bedtime routine.

  • The DVD is organized into 10 chapters.
  • Each chapter is a complete 3-4 minute yoga routine, identified by a colorful icon.
  • You can mix-and-match chapters to create your own unique yoga experience.
  • This DVD can also be played from beginning to end as a full 35-minute yoga routine.

They have found that this format works well with young kids short attention spans and also works well with kids who have ADHD, Autism, etc…..

We have already found this to be true with some of the kids we work with at the JD McCarty Center. One of our Physical Therapists was reviewing the DVD and two children with special needs who happened to be in the exercise room at that time were immediately captivated by the DVD and started to follow along. Namaste Kid has generously donated 24 copies of the previous version of this DVD to give away at my presentation at the Oklahoma Autism Conference & to patients at the JD McCarty Center so I look forward to having more stories to tell about the kids responses to this cool DVD!

While the DVD was designed for young kids (2.5 to 8 years old), it also would be appropriate for older kids that need a simplified format with no distractions.

Why does a “distraction-free” background matter?….

(FYI… the blue painting in the background above is a portion of “Sensory Chaos” by Donna Proctor: http://fineartamerica.com/featured/sensory-chaos–autism-donna-proctor.html)

This is the “Warm-up” sequence from  the Yoga Motion DVD. Your child will learn “Rock-and-Roll”, “Zipper”, and “Cat-Cow”, as well as some breathing techniques.

“Love Me For Who I Am – Songs Celebrating Children Of All Abilities” – new CD by Brady Rymer

I absolutely love the new Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could CD “Love Me For Who I Am”! Will be perfect to use in my kids yoga groups. We incorporate affirmation/self esteem into every group. Here’s the video of the title track “Love Me For Who I Am”. OMazing work by Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I53UiPI39Zc. Anyone who loves kids needs to check out his album! Pure awesomeness!

Laurie Berkner (http://www.facebook.com/LaurieBerknerBand) collaborated with Brady on the song “Soft Things” on this album and very eloquently described the album in her FB post “This beautiful album honors kids of all abilities, with themes that resonate particularly well for kids on the autism spectrum.”.

Add A Little Sunshine To Your Yoga – Sun Breath & Stretch

One of my favorite YouTube clips of little kids doing yoga is from Lani Rosen-Gallagher of Full of Joy Yoga. Being inspired to try it out, I made some suns and  used them in my OMazing Kids Yoga group at the JD McCarty Center. It was OMazing how a prop as simple as a paper sun helped the kids get both arms up, to imitate breathing out “loud/fast” vs. “soft/slow”, and to stretch by moving their suns in different directions. Here is a PDF of the suns I used : small and large suns printable for Sun Stretch & Breath – yoga or you could have kids draw & cut out their own.

YouTube video – Full of Joy Yoga kids – Sun Breath: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYJ7s-nwa24

Thanks Lani for adding some sunshine to my kids yoga! You can follow her blog at: http://fullofjoyoga.blogspot.com/, on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Full-of-Joy-Yoga/284744186246 or find her online at http://fullofjoyoga.com/.

I’m passing the sunshine along to you so you can share the joyful sun 🙂

The Benefits of Yoga in US Schools – Wall Street Journal article

Namaste. Now Nap Time

Article from the Wall Street Journal.

By EMILY GLAZER

A three-year-old doing a downward dog? A four-year-old doing a cobra—and then helping a stuffed animal stretch into the same pose?

Yoga for children is taking off in studios, hospitals and schools across the country, as parents look for new activities that can help motor skills development and even behavioral problems.  Yoga isn’t just good exercise for adults. A growing number of schools, hospitals and studios say it can also be a boon to kids, helping them relax and focus, and improve their flexibility.

A 2003 study by California State University, Los Angeles found that yoga improved students’ behavior, physical health and academic performance, as well as attitudes toward themselves. That same year, Leipzig University reported that yoga reduces feelings of helplessness and aggression, and in the long term helps emotional balance. The benefits of yoga are particularly strong among children with special needs, research shows.

‘A Different Language’

Now thousands of schools across the country—as well as yoga studios and hospitals—are adding programs that teach children to do the exercises.

In January, Paul Ecke Central Elementary School in Southern California added yoga to its curriculum for 650 students at $20,000 a year. Principal Adriana Chavarin says she has seen how calm and centered students are after practicing the techniques. At a recent assembly, students were getting restless as they sat on the floor. Then a few sixth graders spontaneously led the rest in yoga poses and breathing exercises.

“Every kid in the audience quieted down,” says David Miyashiro, the district superintendent. “It’s a different language they all speak now.” .  .  . To read the complete article click here. (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703386704576186463216602684.html)
