The Day After……. Resilience

It’s the day after a much anticipated game. All the hype….. all the hopes….. all the expectations. The game doesn’t turn out as you had hoped. Now what?

Times like these are opportunities to learn/teach/practice “resilience”. Kids watch and learn from the adults & caregivers in their lives. Do I focus on the disappointment of the loss or do I celebrate all the victories and accomplishments that put us in the position to be able to play in that game? Life is all about perspective & choices.

Here is one of my favorite quotes on resilience (from “Socially Strong, Emotionally Secure: 50 Activities to Promote Resilience in Young Children” by Nefertiti Bruce & Karen B. Cairone):

Kids with special needs often face challenges & obstacles bigger than most of us could imagine. One of the best skills we can teach them is resilience & persistence. I am inspired every day by the kids I work with at the JD McCarty Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities. Many of the kids at JDMC are big OKC Thunder Basketball fans and will learn much from watching how the players bounce back from the disappointing loss last night.

Having been born, raised & lived in Oklahoma my whole life, it has been inspiring to see the recent change in perspective in Oklahoma. Oklahomans have always had a strong sense of pioneer spirit & persistence but our self-image as a state was pretty poor…… the whole “dust-bowl” image didn’t help things.  It has been inspiring to see folks in our state rally around our pro basketball team and for Oklahoma to be portrayed in a positive way in the national media.  Thunder players we love y’all and our kids are looking to you for a great example of resilience 🙂

Review & Giveaway: Namaste Kid’s “Once Upon a Mat” DVD

The new “Once Upon a Mat” DVD by Namaste Kid is a great combo of yoga storytelling with their signature distraction-free background & kid-friendly format!

  • The DVD is organized into 9 chapters.
  • Each chapter is a complete 3-5 minute yoga routine, identified by a colorful icon.
  • You can mix-and-match chapters to create your own unique yoga experience.
  • This DVD can also be played from beginning to end as a full 33-minute yoga routine.
  • I LOVE the storytelling format, short length of each chapter, distraction-free background, kid-friendly menu & that it includes affirmations!

See the “In the Garden” chapter from the DVD on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KV6Aylq8WrE

Product Description: Once Upon a Mat brings your child on exciting yoga adventures, including an African safari, a trip to outer space, and getting caught in a thunderstorm!

Once Upon a Mat helps children exercise their bodies and expand their imaginations. Your little yogi will become a part of this adventure through real yoga poses and guided breathing.

Your child will love creating their own yoga adventure. Once Upon a Mat contains 9 chapters. Each chapter is a complete 3-5 minute yoga routine. This DVD can be played from beginning to end as a full 33 minute yoga workout. Your child can also mix-and-match chapters to create their own unique yoga story.

Once Upon a Mat simply features Jessie and her mat. Jessie engages your child in the yoga story, as she guides them through yoga poses and breath work. The distraction-free background is perfect for little yogis, allowing their adventure to go as far as their imagination will take them.

This DVD is ideal for kids ages 2.5 to 7. There are also tips to help your child maximize the benefits of the DVD.

DVD Price at the time of this post: $15.49. Available for purchase on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007XILW5O

Website: http://www.namastekid.com/products/kids-yoga-dvds/once-upon-a-mat-dvd/. Check out the cool pose library: http://www.namastekid.com/learn/kids-yoga-poses/ & find kids yoga classes in your area: http://www.namastekid.com/learn/kids-yoga-classes/.

More about the unique “distraction-free” background: While the DVD was designed for young kids (2.5 to 7 years old), it also would be appropriate for older kids that need a simplified format with no distractions. I have found that this format works well with young kids short attention spans and also works well with kids who have ADHD, Autism, etc…..

Why does a “distraction-free” background matter?….

(FYI… the blue painting in the background above is a portion of “Sensory Chaos” by Donna Proctor: http://fineartamerica.com/products/sensory-chaos–autism-donna-proctor-poster.html)

Free Printable Choice Cards: I made these by taking screen shots off the DVD of the icon for each chapter. Many of the kids I work with have very limited verbal skills so I needed a way for them to be able to make a choice of what yoga adventure we should do. One of our TV’s is wall mounted so the kids can’t just point to the menu on the TV plus many of our kids can’t make a choice out of a field of 9…. but can out of a field of 2 or 3 choices. I cut my cards apart and laminated them so I can offer 2 choices at a time….. but you could also leave all 9 choices on 1 sheet if the kids you work with can handle that many choices. Review & Giveaway: Speaking of Apraxia – A Parents’ Guide to Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Wow! This is the most comprehensive yet easy to read book on Childhood Apraxia of Speech  (CAS) I have ever read in my 22 year career as a SLP.

I LOVE how the book is organized in an extremely easy to read and user-friendly format. It is overflowing with a wealth of information, helpful resources & tips. I also love how well she covered commonly co-occuring diagnoses and lots of therapeutic techniques. Yoga for kids is even mentioned a few times 🙂 There are lots of practical ideas that would be easy for most families to use. I highly recommend this book as a “must have” addition to the library of all pediatric Speech-Language Pathologists, other therapists, teachers and parents of children with CAS.

Amazon has a very extensive preview inside this book: http://www.amazon.com/Speaking-Apraxia-Parents-Childhood-Speech/dp/1606130617#reader_1606130617

Product Description:

At last, a parents’ guide to understanding, treating, and living with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Written in an empathic style by a parent who “has been there”, Speaking of Apraxia offers hope and practical advice for parents of toddlers to teens with this neurologically-based motor speech disorder. Characterized by difficulties with planning and producing the complex set of movements necessary for intelligible speech, CAS can be a child’s only diagnosis or can be accompanied by other special needs such as learning disabilities, Down syndrome, or autism. Parents and professionals will appreciate the author’s clear explanations of everything from diagnosing CAS and working with speech-language pathologists (SLPs), to understanding how to distinguish it from other speech disorders, and getting appropriate early intervention and special education support.

Drawing on the latest research, professionals’ insights, her own and other parents’ experience, the author covers these important topics:

  • I: The Straight Scoop on Speech Basics–CAS definition; An Overview of Speech & Language; Where to Get Help and What to Ask; Your First Appointment with an SLP
  • II: Now What?!–Getting, Coping with and Understanding the Diagnosis; Health & Genetics; All about Speech Therapy
  • III: Helping Your Child–Complementary and Alternative Medical and Treatment Approaches (Diet, Music, Movement Therapy and More)
  • IV: Off to School–Getting Ready; Special Education Ins & Outs; Phonological Awareness; Reading Issues
  • V: Coping & Hoping–Dealing with Emotions and Family Life; What the Future May Hold; Networking, Support Groups, and Advocacy
  • Appendices: Information on insurance, summer camps and enrichment programs, speech-language milestones, and a glossary of terms

Speaking of Apraxia is a comprehensive and authoritative resource any family, SLP, occupational therapist, or pediatric practice will be glad to own or recommend.
