Tips on where to find info now that I’m retiring

.

Yup…. I’m really retiring in 1 week. I’ve been doing this for 28 years and am very excited to “despeechify” my life and start a whole new adventure. Info about my retirement sale can be found on this post: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2018/04/14/omazing-kids-slp-retirement-sale-what-i-have-where-i-will-be-selling-it/.
.
I have received numerous messages asking “What will happen to your blog?” & “Where can we find info about apps that are free or on sale for a great deal?”. So I wrote this post to pass along info.
.
What will happen to my blog and social media sites:

I am planning on leaving my blog and social media sites up for 12 months after I retire to allow folks plenty of time to save any free printables, workshop presentation handouts, the big post listing apps for SLPs by goal areas, the big blog post with tips about how SLPs can get FREE access to AAC apps, AAC app user groups, funding options & more, AAC core vocabulary ideas, kids yoga lesson plans and other info that I have shared over the years. I’ll decide later what to do with my blog and social media sites beyond that.
.
Reviews:

I am not accepting any requests to do any new reviews for products, books or apps. I have a couple of reviews that are currently in process but those will be the last ones that I do.
.

Blog:

I will be doing very few new blog posts or updates to previous posts since I will be focused on selling off my stash of materials and getting our house sold so my husband and I can move to the mountains in Colorado and do some traveling.
.
If you run into dead links on old blog posts please keep in mind that all links were active at the time that blog post was done. Please use Google to look for whatever that resource might have been.
.
If you are looking for something on my blog, please use the “search” feature.
.
How to find info about app deals:
If you still have an iPad running something prior to iOS 11, then these are the two ways that I use to find apps that are either free or on sale for a great deal that day:

* AppZapp HD Pro – daily new Apps, best hot deals & free Apps by ConIT AG, https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/appzapp-hd-pro-daily-new-apps-best-hot-deals-free-apps/id428248004?mt=8 (free app, iPad only, will not work with iOS 11)
* The AppShopper website: http://appshopper.com/all/prices/free

I’ve also gotten a couple of good apps for free by checking this app: Apps Gone Free & Daily Tips by AppAdvice.com, https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/apps-gone-free-daily-tips/id470693788?mt=8.

Unfortunately most of the large app review sites have either disappeared, post very infrequently or have moved on to focusing on reviews for products. To be honest by the time some sites post about an app being free I have already found it myself using the methods listed above.

.

AAC App Sales:

Be sure to follow Lauren Enders’ Facebook page for the most reliable info about upcoming AAC app sales:

https://www.facebook.com/LaurenSEndersMaCccSlp

.
Questions about specific AAC apps, recommendations for type of iPad, types of cases, other apps, etc.:

* Join the Facebook users group specific to that app. Folks are quick to provide support and most groups have an Admin (or several Admins) that works for that company. See links on this post: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2016/06/11/aac-tips-how-slps-can-get-free-access-to-aac-apps-aac-app-user-groups-funding-options-more/

* If you are a SLP, join the AAC for the SLP Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1539830846285663/

* Looking for iPad case options? Check out Lauren Enders Pinterest boards. She has a separate board for every model of iPad:

https://www.pinterest.com/lasenders/

The AAC for the SLP is also a helpful group to brainstorm case options.

* Looking for non-AAC apps with certain features or to target specific goals? Since I will no longer be doing therapy I won’t be keeping up on these details. Unfortunately I don’t have a specific place to refer you to for this.
.
I rarely check the e-mail that I have associated with this blog since it is flooded with spam mail and after retirement will only occasionally respond to questions on Facebook unless they are specifically related to my retirement sale. It is hard for me to walk away from something that I spent so much time on but need to do so to focus on the future.
.
Thanks to everyone who has left kind comments or messages. I’m glad that you have found my posts helpful over the years 😃.

2017 Kidmunicate’s 100 top blogs and websites for SLPs ~ OMazing Kids on the list again

image

.

It is an honor and blessing to see OMazing Kids on the list again this year! That’s three years in a row. 2016 was quite a year on OMazing Kids. As we start 2017, OMazing Kids has had a total of 1,245,083 hits on the blog, 12,984 followers on Facebook, 1,684 followers on Twitter, 2,753 followers on Pinterest, 143 subscribers on YouTube and 443 followers on Instagram (just started exploring that social media platform in 2016.

I invite you to check out all the fabulous blogs and websites on the list. It’s a great way to find new SLP sites to follow: http://kidmunicate.com/100-top-blogs-and-websites-for-speech-and-language-pathology-for-2017

Their description of my blog this year made me laugh since I had no idea I wrote that many posts in 2016 and couldn’t do a headstand to save my soul…. lol! I actually avoid any inversions like that with patients due to the contraindications for kids with seizures and several other diagnoses.

Out of all my blog posts this year, here are the 8 posts that I spent countless hours writing with the intent of passing along knowledge and resources to other speechies as I am getting closer to retirement:

1) To help SLPs find iPad apps useful in our work, this mega post is sorted by goal area and only contains apps that I have personally used and are still currently available. I’m in the process of adding several more apps to the list. The post about this list has gone viral on my Facebook page:

I knew there was a big need for this list… but to see that over 75,000 folks have seen the post so far blows my mind. https://omazingkidsllc.com/2016/12/31/the-ipad-the-slp-in-2017-app-list-for-slps-sorted-by-goal-area/

2) Because every child deserves a “voice” and I was seeing way too many posts from fellow SLPs who thought their only options were to try free or very cheap AAC apps with kids, I spent hours compiling get this post to help spread the word about how they can get FREE access to several robust AAC apps as well as info about potential funding sources: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2016/06/11/aac-tips-how-slps-can-get-free-access-to-aac-apps-aac-app-user-groups-funding-options-more/

3 & 4) Because every child deserves to be able to play games: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2016/07/26/adapted-games-for-inclusive-play-candy-land/ & https://omazingkidsllc.com/2016/07/28/no-prep-slp-tips-candy-land/

5) To help enlighten folks to the amazing potential of the iPad as a tool in the SLP toolbox: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2016/06/09/the-ipad-the-slp-toolbox/

6) To share an example of how I teach these challenging concepts through a combination of visual supports & AAC: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2016/05/18/teaching-prepositions-spatial-concepts-free-printable-preposition-and-spatial-concept-activity-cards-for-the-fisher-price-laugh-learn-puppys-activity-home-and-gotalk-now-plus-aac-templ/

7) Because I’ve been doing this for 27 years and had no idea that there was research about a developmental sequence for acquisition of irregular past tense verbs. Totally changed how I teach them: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2016/05/11/free-printable-irregular-past-tense-cards-research-on-developmental-sequence/

8) Because I still enjoy combining kids yoga & great kids picture books to help kids with special needs to see they are wonderful just as they are: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2016/01/06/a-color-of-his-own-the-mixed-up-chameleon-lesson-plan-ideas-free-printables/
.
I look forward to seeing what 2017 had in store!

{SPAM WARNING} I have received this e-mail twice so far. And I just received an e-mail from Jenny at Happy Planet Yoga that she receieved it as well. Please DO NOT click on any links in the e-mail…. even the one inviting you to “unsubscribe” to the solicitation messages. I am sure this is spam and clicking on the link may result in a computer virus. At this point I have no idea if this person has hacked into my e-mail address book, blog, Facebook or other social media. I am reporting it as spam to my e-mail provider & you can do the same if you receive it.
My blog has been slammed with lots of “spam” comments lately. I have removed every one of them….. again I say….. imagine if these spammers used that amount of energy for “good”?!
Who on earth would think it was a good thing to attack the blog & social media sites of someone dedicated to helping kids (especially those with special needs) is beyond my comprehension!

{New on OMazing Kids} Giveaways that are “A Way to Give”

A Way to Give - Giveaway

{New on OMazing Kids} Giveaways that are “A Way to Give”

I know this is a bit out-of-the box & different than most typical giveaways where the person who enters wins all the “stuff”. I was inspired to make giveaways more meaningful after a recent outreach experience. Think of this new format as a way to think beyond just your own needs & plant some seeds when entering a giveaway ♥

If you have a kids product that you would like me to review & host an “A Way to Give Giveaway” for, you can e-mail me. I often have a waiting list of items to review and handle reviews in the order in which the items are received so it may take a few weeks before I can get to yours. While many of my reviews focus on kids wellness/yoga, I am also interested in a wider range of kids products including books, toys, equipment, educational products, therapy materials, etc. that I can use in my work as a Speech-Language Pathologist with kids ages 0-21 years with special needs. I also am interested in doing reviews for online trainings.

The JD McCarty Center, where I work full time as a SLP, is a non-profit pediatric rehab hospital for kids ages 0-21 years with developmental disabilities. Budgets are usually tight. Doing reviews & giveaways on my own time in the evenings & on weekends is the primary way I get new materials to use with my patients and a way that I can attend online trainings to learn new things to help them. Plus it’s a fun way to spread the word about great products!

2nd Blogiversary at OMazing Kids

2nd blogiversary

I just realized that today is my 2nd blogiversary!

I started the OMazing Kids blog & Facebook page two years ago as a way to share info with 55 participants at a workshop I was scheduled to present at. I had no idea that it would grow into so much more! It was fun to see the OMazing Kids Facebook page pass the 3,200 mark today. I love networking and sharing ideas. My hope for this upcoming year of blogging and social media is that OMazing Kids will continue to grow as a community of folks who exchange ideas, connect & support each other in our work with kids.

brainstorming on OMazing Kids

Feel free to ask a question, share ideas, share links for fun things, share your kids yoga Facebook page, blog posts, etc…. Anything related to kids yoga, kids wellness, education, special needs, etc. is fine. Feel free to post on the OMazing Kids Facebook page or send me a Facebook message and I’ll be glad to share it with the group. If you post logged in as your FB page, please give your name & if you post logged in as yourself, please “tag” or include the link to your kids yoga FB page if you have one. It will help folks get to know each other & build connections. It’s also one of the main ways I find new FB pages to “like” 🙂

The only things that I ask in return are that you post a comment on that brainstorming session thanking folks who took the time to share ideas, that you consider “liking” each other’s kids yoga Facebook pages & that you consider inviting a couple of friends to come join us on OMazing Kids.

Feel free to share ideas that you see on OMazing Kids. Thanks in advance for tagging my page or mentioning that the OMazing Kids blog, Facebook page or other social media sites were the source. I go to great lengths to share original sources, give credit and to help promote other pages…. so I would appreciate the kindness in return 🙂

Giveaway

Be watching for lots of fun reviews & giveaways over the next few months…. at last count I had about a dozen on the “to do” list. The JD McCarty Center, where I work full-time as a Speech-Language Pathologist, is a non-profit pediatric rehab hospital for kids ages 0-21 years with developmental disabilities. So budgets are always tight. Doing reviews & giveaways on my own time in the evenings & on weekends is the primary way I get kids yoga & wellness materials to use with our patients. Plus it’s a fun way to spread the word about great products and provides an opportunity for you to win great items to use with your kids!

  • I am listing them in categories & in alphabetical order within that category.
  • I have included a link to the blog post if I reviewed that training so you can see more details there.

New: Research Roundup on the OMazing Kids Blog

Announcing a new feature on the OMazing Kids Blog: “Research Roundup”.

https://omazingkidsllc.com/research-roundup/

This page is dedicated to sharing research & articles relating to kids wellness, including yoga, with a focus on Autism and other special needs.

Articles are listed in order of publication dates with most recent publications listed first.

When available, I am sharing links to full research articles rather than just the “abstract”.  Advocates and practitioners are cautioned to read more that just an “abstract” in order to understand research study results because abstracts rarely mention any limitations to the study, they report only key findings, and the brevity of the paragraph (typically 120 words) may tend to provide an overly optimistic read of the study and what was found. For more info about reading & understanding research articles: http://www.uky.edu/CRVAW/files/Understanding%20Scientific%20Journal%20Articles.pdf & http://www.womenshealthapta.org/pdfs/HowToResearchArticle.pdf

It includes a full PDF of the latest research on yoga for kids with Autism:
