  • I am listing them in categories & in alphabetical order within that category.

Review & Giveaway: Calm Kids – Help Children Relax with Mindful Activities book & Level 1 online course

Calm Kids book and online course

Want to learn how to teach mindfulness, meditation & relaxation to kids of all ages? Want to help the kids in your life or the kids you work with learn skills to manage stress? The Calm Kids – Help Children Relax with Mindful Activities book & Level 1 online course are wonderful resources & provide a wealth of information!

Book:  (Publication Date: March 1, 2012 | ISBN-10: 0863158625 | ISBN-13: 978-0863158629, paperback, 153 pages). Mindfulness and meditation can help children recognize and cope with tension and stress throughout their lives. In this practical and inspiring book, Lorraine Murray explains a variety of different approaches including: meditations around daily activities for busy families, ideas for group ‘quietness’ sessions in schools, fun & tactile rhymes for toddlers to help them calm down before bedtime, ways to help teenagers reduce anxiety, grounding and balancing for children with ADHD, calming suggestions for children with autism spectrum disorders. This book is ideal for teachers, parents and youth workers; for complete beginners or those with experience in relaxation and meditation techniques. It offers advise needed to lead sessions with children, helping them feel calmer, happier and more peaceful.

Calm Kids TOC

The book is available through their websitethe publisher, Amazon and other online book sellers. I purchased my copy when it was first released on Amazon.com in the USA in March 2012 (http://www.amazon.com/Calm-Kids-Children-Mindful-Activities/dp/0863158625), read it cover to cover within a couple of days & have been using the concepts & techniques in my OMazing Kids inclusive kids yoga classes & the therapeutic kids yoga group at the JD McCarty Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities for the past 11 months.

Here’s what I love about the book:

  • great info about causes of stress & stress in kids
  • practical benefits & strategies
  • easy to understand information about the concept of being “grounded & centered”
  • lots of sample guided imagery, meditation & relaxation scripts are included for a variety of age levels
  • great tips on learning how to write your own scripts, transitioning to using trigger words (instead of relying on a script) & finally developing your own “inner script”
  • specific tips on working with different age groups [babies/caregiver, toddlers young kids (4-6), older kids (7-12), and teenagers to young adults (12+)]
  • the very simple script examples in the chapters on babies & toddlers have been especially helpful as ideas for the kids I work with at JDMC who have a variety of special needs and often have significant developmental delays, cognitive impairments & short attention spans.
  • the chapter on ADHD has great charts listing symptoms of hyperactivity – impulsiveness – inattention, symptoms of the center of imbalance (being “ungrounded”) and grounding/balancing activities. It also includes several case studies & info about mudras.
  • the chapter on Autism has an in-depth case study and several tips. (FYI…. Lorraine recently announced on her Facebook page that she is working on a second book and that it will be specifically about teaching meditation to children with special needs and/or who have been diagnosed with ADD, ADHD or Autism. See details on her blog: http://www.teachchildrenmeditation.com/?cat=-0)

Online Course: The online course covers everything (and more) which Lorraine teaches in her level 1 Calm Kids course. The course includes 5 modules which help bring the Calm Kids book to life! The online course costs £99 and includes a copy of the book ‘Calm Kids’.

Module 1 – What is Meditation

Module 2 – Writing Meditations

Module 3 – How to Deliver a Meditation

Module 4 – Developing your Mediation Ideas

Module 5 – Sharing the Experience

See in-depth info, including samples & an online currency converter to calculate the course cost outside the UK on their website: http://www.teachchildrenmeditation.com/calmkids-online-course/

Calm Kids level 1 online course

Calm Kids level 1 - info

script vs. no script

tree meditation

finished calm kids online course

Here’s what I loved about the online course:

  • it brought the concepts in the book to life through lots of video clips & mp3’s. The mp3’s provided great examples of vocal tone & pacing to use in guided relaxation.
  • it especially brought home the concept of going through the creative process of learning how to write guided relaxation scripts, then going to trigger words & taking the leap into going “script-free” by developing my “inner script”. This concept was covered in the book but somehow clicked for me after having it presented via video & mp’s examples in the online training.
  • Lorraine was so encouraging in her online video clips. Each step of the way she was complimenting you for what you had accomplished & encouraged you to keep going. Her passion for the work she is doing shines through!
  • it is divided into small, very manageable segments which was great to be able to do it in small increments. Anyone who works full time and has family commitments will appreciate this. It took me a total of about 5 hours to do the online course but I did it is several small segments. There is homework & practice activities to do in each module. So take your time in doing the course. Many folks do it spread over a 5 week period….. but the beauty of an online course is that you can go at a pace that works for you & your schedule 🙂
  • the site is very easy to navigate, easy to log in and out of, it resumes where you left off when you log back in & you can review previous segments as many times as you would like.
  • I tried it out on two different web browsers on my home computer (Internet Explorer & Google Chrome). It worked on both but looked better on Google Chrome so I used that for completing the course.

Perfect Square: a perfect book for kids yoga

perfect square cover with OMazing Kids logo

One square. Unlimited possibilities. One bright red square starts out perfectly happy. But then something happens. On Monday, the square turns orange, gets cut up and punched with holes. Though no longer a perfect square, it transforms into something just as wonderful…a babbling, giggling, clapping fountain. On Tuesday, the square (now yellow), gets torn into pieces and turns into a garden. Each day of the week, Perfect Square turns a different color & its “perfectness” is disrupted and each day it creatively turns itself into something new and different. On the last day, nothing happens to Perfect Square. It waits and waits. I LOVE that instead of waiting any longer for something else to change it, it changes itself!

If you have been following my blog, Facebook page & other social media pages for any length of time, you know that I love & own hundreds of kids picture books. There are lots of “good” books & then there are a few “great” books….. like Green Eggs & Ham with it’s message of trying new things, exploring feelings with Dr. Seuss’ My Many Colored Days, the creativity of Not a Box, the sensory extravaganza & fun of being made into a pizza in Pete’s a Pizza,  affirmation & the power of friendship in Agate, What Good is a Moose?, etc.

Perfect Square falls into the “great” category for the following reasons:

  • includes lots of early learning concepts (colors, shapes, days of the week)
  • large, easy to read text
  • lots of great vocabulary, descriptive language & action words
  • fosters creativity
  • lots of opportunities for kids yoga
  • has a great empowering messages of taking life’s “unperfectness” and making your own beauty out of it & the beauty of thinking outside the “box”.

Kids yoga opportunities in this book:

  • fountain (volcano and/or waterfall)
  • bird
  • flower
  • kite
  • bridge
  • river (seated forward fold)
  • fish (* for safety reasons I often do easy pose + a mudra of the sign for “fish” rather than the traditional “fish” pose)
  • mountain
  • window (could either do a group pose to create a window or could do star pose to make arms & legs like the windowpane divider)
  • the book then repeats back through all the previous items which gives kids great practice to repeat the poses they had just learned

Here’s what I liked about these products:

  • I tried out the purple mat in my therapeutic OMazing Kids yoga group at the JD McCarty Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities. Since I only had one of the mats and a group of 4 young boys, I used the mat as a special surprise towards the end of the group. Each child got to take turns getting on the mat, pointing to one of the pose pics and then we all did that pose. This worked GREAT for this group of young boys who had varying disabilities, communication challenges & some behavior issues. The mat provided a way for them to communicate a choice without the risk of yoga cards being damaged (if you work with kids with special needs or behavior challenges you have probably experienced the loss of precious yoga cards). One of the young boys was having a particularly rough day and using the Lazy Lizards mat was the best part of the class for him. He giggled & smiled as we all became “frogs” after he pointed to that pic on the mat.
  • I like that the mat is eco-friendly, closed cell construction, has rounded corners & is thick enough to provide a little extra cushion.
  • I like that the pics on the mat are large and that there are only 12 poses on the mat. When a couple of the young boys in our class were unable to make a choice out of a field of 12, I gave them a choice of 2 poses that were next to each other on the mat.
  • It’s nice to be able to turn the mat over to a plain solid side for kids who might be overwhelmed by the visual stimulation of all the pose pics. Or those who might take it literally that they can only do those poses or do those poses in that order on the mat (you will be able to relate to this if you work with kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders or other special needs).
  • I liked the playful nature of the DVD and that it showed a realistic depiction of what a yoga class for young kids looks like. Kids were allowed to participate & enjoy the class at their level. While the DVD is marketed for ages 3+, based on my experience I would suggest that it would be most appealing to young kids (ages 3-7). My favorite parts of the DVD were the seed-to-flower & making a slice of pizza sequences.

Other thoughts: While the music in the background of the DVD was usually pleasant, at times it made it difficult to hear the yoga instructor. This also could be overstimulating or make it difficult for kids with Sensory Processing Disorder, Autism, Central Auditory Processing problems or other special needs. Two of the poses may be a little confusing to kids who some experience with yoga: tree (is really more like mountain with arms lifted) & flamingo (is what tree pose traditionally looks like).

Children and adults alike can spend time together making Jeeva and his friends come to life through physical movement.

Here’s what I love about this book:

  • Each 2-page spread has a full-page colorful illustration on the left. The right side has short text in a large easy-to-read font plus an illustration of the yoga pose.
  • Poses in the book: mountain, sun salutation (simplified to a Warrior I pose), cat, downward facing dog, lizard, monkey, tree, eagle, giraffe, river, fish, lotus, savasana.
  • Includes a brief relaxation script for savasana.
  • A 14-page section at the end of the book provides another illustration of each pose & detailed but easy-to-understand instructions for that pose.
  • Love that the names for characters were thoughtfully chosen & meanings given (ex: Jeeva = one true self, Veera = courageous one)
  • Wonderful messages of friendship, compassion, commitment & taking care of others!

Robot-Themed Kids Yoga Lesson Plan Ideas

Robot Kids Yoga Lesson Plan Ideas

One of the most frequent requests on OMazing Kids has been for “robot-themed” kids yoga lesson plan ideas.  I have searched for “robot theme kids yoga ideas” several times. There is alot more for a “space theme” than for “robots” but here’s what I found:

* Robots Slither by Ryan Ann Hunter [picture book with the following opportunities for yoga: cobra, bug, chair, bed, fish, whale, boat, rocket, star, tree, cat, skateboarder (warrior 2), breath of fire, dinosaur stomps, cross-crawl hike, up dog, down dog]

* Lots of Bots! by David A. Carter [pop-up picture book with the following opportunities for yoga: helicopter, cat, cow, mountain, vacuum cleaner breath, wiggle bot yoga freeze dance, washing machine, toothbrush, woodchopper, hip-hop robot dance, boat, treasure chest, acro-bots (any acro-yoga partner activities that would be safe for those kids ages & abilities)]
