Review & Giveaway: “Jungle Story” by My First Yoga®

Looking for a fun new book to use in your kids yoga or kids movement classes? Or a great book with simple predictable text and repeated lines to use in your reading program or speech-language therapy sessions? Then march on over to check out “Jungle Story” by My First Yoga®!

This My First Yoga® book leads children on an interactive adventure through the jungle in search of a monkey. Child friendly vocabulary and vibrant illustrations provide a series of easy to follow yoga poses that bring this Jungle Story into motion! Learn to become a hissing snake, a hiding turtle, a roaring lion, a balancing flamingo, a strong elephant & a tall giraffe as you search on a hike through a jungle for the monkey.

Here is why I LOVE this book:

  • The clear 3-step directions for each animal pose are included on that page in the story.
  • The vibrant color pose pictures really stand out against the distraction free white background. This will help kids with special needs (ADHD, Autism, Visual Impairment, etc…) and young children be able to attend to the important information in each picture.
  • I love the sitting down version of “marching”. This is an adaptation that will help kids with special needs or younger children who may not have the balance or coordination to do a standing “hiking-in-place” motion. For older kids or those that would enjoy more of a challenge, you could start out with the sitting “march” and work your way to a standing “hiking-in-place” motion or even a Brain Gym “Cross Crawl Hike”.
  • Great opportunities to answer the “yes/no” question, “Is this a monkey? No, this is a ________” throughout the book as you find each animal along the way. I made a picture card of the monkey to hold up so the kids I work with could see the picture in the book compared to the picture of the monkey.
  • Great use of repeated lines “Is this a monkey”and “March March March”.  Repeated lines in stories are a great way to promote emergent literacy skills & to provide opportunities for children to participate by “reading” part of the story (either verbally or through the use of a voice output communication aide like a BigMack).  Here is a link to an article about using “Repetitive Books:  An Effective Therapeutic Strategy for Children Diagnosed with Apraxia of Speech” by Michelle Solomon, M.A., CCC-SLP and Lavinia Pereira, M.A., CCC-SLP (http://tinyurl.com/88ltzo4). PDF version: Repetitive Books – An Effective Therapeutic Strategy for Children Diagnosed with Apraxia of Speech
  • Cool opportunities for sequencing and repeated vocabulary exposure as each animal is added to the “March March March” page as they are found along the way.

Printable Visual Supports for Kids Yoga

Looking for Printable Visual Supports for Kids Yoga?

Several folks have sent e-mails requesting printable versions of some of the visual supports I have made to use in OMazing Kids Yoga so I have uploaded several to this blog in PDF format:

I used a combination of Boardmaker, MS Word, MS Paint, Google Images and the “snipping tool” in Windows 7 to make these visual supports. Boardmaker is a software program commonly used by Special Education teachers, Speech-Language Pathologists and other therapists to make communication boards, educational materials & visual supports for kids with special needs. Mayer Johnson offers a 30-day free trial of the program (http://www.mayer-johnson.com/downloads/trials/) and free online trainings on how to use it (http://www.mayer-johnson.com/training/recorded/details/id/2189/).

I would LOVE to see examples of visual supports that other folks have made & use in yoga groups with kids and teens! Feel free to post them here on my blog, on my Facebook page or send them to me via e-mail so I can share them 🙂

The “4 B’s of Self Control” is a wonderful support created by Barbara Gini at BodyLogique in collaboration with Lisa Auerbach Baum, OT & owner of KidsPlayWork – Pediatric Occupational TherapyHere is the PDF version I shared at my presentation at the Oklahoma Autism Conference: 4 B’s of Self Control – A 4-step method for relaxing tension, refocusing & calming.

Together we can create supports that kids with different learning styles or disabilities will need in order to be successfully included in yoga groups….. inclusion of ALL kids should be our goal 🙂   (as you can tell, this is an area that I am passionate about!)

For more details about the importance of using visual supports to be inclusive of different learning styles, see my blog post: https://omazingkidsyoga.wordpress.com/2011/10/11/using-visual-supports-in-yoga-groups-for-kids-teens-being-inclusive-of-learning-styles/

Product Review: Little Lotus Kids Yoga Cards

Looking for some unique cards to use in kids yoga? Then check out the fun new Little Lotus Kids Yoga Cards 🙂

The Little Lotus Kids Yoga Card deck has 55 cards (39 illustrated yoga pose cards & 16 yoga game/partner pose cards with simple instructions and fun ideas in imagination “bubbles” on the back of each card) on 4 x 6 card stock with rounded corners packed full of fun!

Written by Tracy Johnson, RYT 200, yoga teacher at Yoga in the Valley & beautifully illustrated by artist Brenda Olson.

Here is a sneek peek at just a few of the cards….

I love the imagination idea bubbles on the back of each card! Here are a few of my faves: “Imagine the sun rising and filling you with energy”, “Imagine you are the moon looking down on the beautiful earth and smile!” & “Imagine you a baby bunny safe & warm in its rabbit hole”.

The “Gift Balloon” card encourages kids to think about someone in need and leads them through a guided imagery of gently breathing to fill a balloon up with all the things that person needs and it floating to that person.

Kids always love “Happy Baby” or “Sleeping Bug” pose. Multiply that fun by doing a group “Silly Centipedes” pose 🙂

Looking for a fun way to work on social skills or teamwork? The deck includes several cards (Teamwork, Silly Story, Sharing Circle, Musical Mats, Hum Circle, Ha Ha How Are You?, Siddhi Says, etc.) that would be fun to use in your groups 🙂

Looking for fun ways to work on vocabulary, expressive language & imaginative play? The deck includes fun cards (ABC Yoga, Animal Yoga – creating a story adventure, Picture Safari, The First Yogi, Floating on a Cloud, Eagle Eagle, etc.) that are a blast!

What makes these cards especially appealing and unique is the fun & quirky illustrations! They would appeal to young kids and even older tweens/teens and could inspire them to draw illustrations of their own as they invent their own yoga poses.

The only slight downside to the deck was the packaging. The clear plastic box is not very sturdy and may not stand up over time.

Updated: Yoga for Kids and Teens in Oklahoma – Resource List

Click here for the UPDATED resource list (PDF): Yoga for Kids and Teens in Oklahoma – Resource List

I compiled this resource list of folks offering yoga classes/groups for kids & teens in Oklahoma based on what I could find online & through e-mail and Facebook correspondence. It is a work in progress so please let me know if you would like information added, removed or updated.  If I have overlooked someone who is doing yoga with kids and/or teens please let me know so I can get them added to the list.

Just in case you are wondering why I put together this resource list…..

1. We have kids & teens who benefit from yoga in my OMazing Kids Yoga groups at the JD McCarty Center in Norman, Oklahoma. Kids come to the center from all over the state and I have been looking for places to refer families to when their child discharges from the JD McCarty Center.

2. It will be nice to be able to network and collaborate with other folks doing yoga for kids & teens here in Oklahoma.

Thanks for all the OMazing things you each do for kids & teens in Oklahoma!
