The Super Simple Songs – Animals DVD features 12 animal songs, including YouTube favorites, “Hickory, Dickory…Crash!” “Walking In The Jungle,” and “The Animals On The Farm.” Perfect for watching at home, in the classroom, or on the go. Along the way, kids will learn about other topics such as counting, parts of the body, basic time telling, animal sounds, and action verbs. It’s animals, made super fun and super simple! Recommended for children ages 3 and up.

Here’s what I love about the DVD:

nice slow pace (the only exception is when the Animals on the Farm song gets faster & faster at the end).
repetitive & predictable lines in the songs.
nice heavy beat.
most encourage movement.
pleasant vocals & melodies (parents, teachers & therapists will appreciate tunes that won’t drive you crazy to hear again & again).
high quality graphics.
has the potential to be incorporated in so many different ways! Parents, early childhood educators, special educators, ELL teachers, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, kids yoga teachers, PE teachers & more could all find ways to incorporate this DVD.
Here are a few ideas I have from the perspective of aSLP & kids yoga teacher:
- Good Morning Mr. Rooster could be used to start the child’s day or start a class or therapy session. Many of the patients I see thrive on having routines and respond well to songs to help with transitions.
- Let’s Go to the Zoo, Walking in the Jungle, Yes I Can! & Wag Your Tail all depict specific movements. Some even have a split screen with an animal on one side and the character on the other both doing the same movement. This could easily be incorporated into goals for gross motor imitation.
- Hickory Dickory – Crash! has 6 animals starting with a tiny mouse. Each animal is bigger than the next. Love the stretched out ending to allow kids time to predict what might happen.
- My Teddy Bear incorporates counting & body parts. I love how the video zooms in on each body part.
- I have a Pet would be fun to incorporate into goals for imitation of animal sounds & vocabulary.
- Yes, I Can! would be fun to target answering yes/no questions either verbally or via AAC.
- Mary Had a Kangaroo would be fun to target adjectives.
- The Animals on the Farm would be another one to target animal sounds. This song does speed up so the last portion may not be appropriate for kids who are easily over stimulated.
- What Do You Hear? would be a fun way to target listening & talking about “I hear a ______” via PECS, AAC or verbally.
- Wag Your Tail would be fun to target “fast / slow”.
- After A While Crocodile is a nice soothing song that would work well to end a class or therapy session. Again using a song to ease that transition.

This kit is very well designed & organized! I love the positive message, awesome illustrations, quality narration, fun music, how many activities are included & that this was all inspired by the writings of an individual with ASD. What a fabulous example of self-advocacy! The best insights that we have into the world of Autism are to listen to individuals like Sarah who are able to tell us about it through their own experiences. It’s exciting to think about how easy & fun this would be to implement in any elementary school or advocacy event 🙂

About the Author:

Sarah Stup, a writer with Autism, discovered the power of the written word when she was eight. Until that time, because she could not speak, few appreciated just how bright she was or the extent to which she absorbed her lessons and environment. Ultimately, Sarah would graduate high school with honors, but it was from her first awkwardly written sentences that her dream of being a writer began.

Sarah was born in Frederick, MD, in 1983, and was diagnosed with autism at an early age. Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning its symptoms vary from person to person. Sarah’s disability is considered significant. She does not speak and has limited motor skills. Still, she writes.

From her cozy kitchen nook, she has written two books in two years: Do-si-Do with Autism, for children; and Are Your Eyes Listening? Collected Works, for adults. Sarah has also just released her Keepsake Collection, which includes Nest Feathers: A celebration of family, home and memories shared and Heartand Spirit: Words to comfort, inspire and share.

Although Sarah’s writings deal with the experience of autism, each also touches on universal themes like love, personal meaning and the need to belong.

The DVD is organized into 11 chapters.
Each chapter is a complete 3-5 minute yoga routine, identified by a colorful icon.
You can mix-and-match chapters to create your own unique yoga experience.
This DVD can also be played from beginning to end as a full 42-minute yoga routine.
I LOVE the sports theme, creativity, short length of each chapter, distraction-free background, kid-friendly menu, parent info section & that it includes affirmations (I am fun! I am playful!).
Love that this DVD also has “Cool Down” & “Yoga Rest” segments.
If you are a kids yoga teacher, this DVD will give you some new creative ideas for yoga poses (ex: scoop up your legs to add sand onto the sand castle in flower pose, cross-crawl hike from Brain Gym as a soccer ball bounce, a modified dancer pose as a “slam dunk” in basketball, etc….). Kids yoga teacher trainings very rarely come to Oklahoma so I am always excited to find other ways to get new ideas.

More about the unique “distraction-free” background: While the DVD was designed for young kids (3 to 8 years old), it also would be appropriate for older kids that need a simplified format with no distractions. I have found that this format works well with young kids short attention spans and also works well with kids who have ADHD, Autism, etc…..

Free Printable Choice Cards: I made these by taking screen shots off the DVD of the icon for each chapter. Many of the kids I work with have very limited verbal skills so I needed a way for them to be able to make a choice of what yoga adventure we should do. One of our TV’s is wall mounted so the kids can’t just point to the menu on the TV plus many of our kids can’t make a choice out of a field of 11…… but can out of a field of 2 or 3 choices. I cut my cards apart and laminated them so I can offer 2 choices at a time….. but you could also leave all choices on 1 sheet if the kids you work with can handle that many choices. Yoga-based Exercise Featuring Children with Special Needs. Complete Yoga Class plus Mini Relaxation Class. Here’s what I love about these products:

This book is full of wisdom & insight into working with kids with special needs. The weight & feel of it reminds me of a textbook from grad school. I took several weeks to read it slowly & soak in all its wealth of info. The depth of information & research behind “why” you would do activities is phenomenal. I love that the first 140 pages of the book are devoted to developing a solid understanding about assessing needs, the brain, stress, creating a safe space for yoga, contraindications for particular poses or activities, engaging children, levels of prompting, simplifying instructions, handling challenging behaviors and more. These are all very important to understand before jumping into doing therapeutic yoga. Each of the 60 yoga poses includes a black and white photo and information about the starting position, benefits, simple child-friendly instructions, points to remember, variations, precautions, counterpose & sequencing tips. Additional information is provided for yoga flow sequences & yoga for particular needs (this section will come in handy for OT’s, PT’s, SLP’s and other therapists wanting to incorporate yoga into their therapeutic “toolbox”). The Yoga Therapy for Classrooms section contains great sequences and tips for incorporating yoga breaks. I get several requests per month from folks wanting information on how to do therapeutic yoga. This book will now be added to my short list of “must have” resources. The concepts in this book are solid beyond the scope of a therapeutic yoga class…. anyone who works with children with special needs should read this book!

I love that the video shows a real yoga therapy class in action. All the children in the video have Autism and it was taped in a classroom. There is occasionally background noise from the hallway or other classrooms, they use nap pads vs. yoga mats & like any classroom there are visual distractions. Yet Louise creates an oasis of calm for these kids that is golden! Her calm soothing voice & slow pace keep the kids engaged. She provides the minimal amount of prompting needed and always asks the child’s permission first. Many of the poses and activities in the video are also included in her book as well as the S.T.O.P. and RELAX© curriculum. If you are looking to build your therapeutic yoga library, all three items are recommended.

The Buccaneer Bounce & FP Dance are hilarious & fun ways to get kids moving.
Pearl the Purple Pirate Princess gets girls in on the pirate fun.
Twinkle Twinkle Little StaRRR is a fun twist on a familiar song.
Treasure of Smuggler’s Notch is fun for kids to listen to clues to guess what the treasure is.
For all my fellow SLPeeps…. Give Me an RRR! is a funny way to work on vocalic /ar/ as the song goes through lists of that sound in the initial and final positions.
Get creativity flowing with Hungry Pirate. It lists all the unusual foods a pirate would eat (ex: octopus oatmeal, plankton pancakes, stinky sharkfin sandwich, barnacle biscuits, swordfish stew, etc. It would be fun to have kids think up other crazy food alliterations (both words start with the same letter).
The Seven C’s is my favorite song! If you haven’t heard this song yet you should….. a really cool way to incorporate some yamas/niyamas into a pirate themed class! “there’s COURTESY, COMPASSION and a bit of COURAGE too. Here’s what I love about the DVD:

Stephanie & Yuji’s passion for helping kids with special needs shines through! Even though I’ve never met them in person, I feel a connection with these kindred spirits. This DVD is definitely being added to my short list of “must have” faves for folks wanting to do adapted yoga / adapted movement with kids with special needs. They have more products in the works which I can’t wait to see!
The DVD is presented in a very easy to understand format.
The Body Songs & hand texture movements are easy to learn. These techniques will be great to incorporate into my OMazing Kids yoga classes & my work as a Speech-Language Pathologist!
The DVD booklet & intro section of the DVD provide info for creative use of each hand texture movement (ex: “deep press” to simulate elephants, stones or other heavy objects)
They provide very clear info about being sensitive to each child’s unique sensory needs and the sensory aspects of each hand texture movement.
They provide clear info about setting up a positive environment & safety precautions before getting started.
They encourage you to practice on another adult & have an adult practice on you before trying it out with kids. “The quality of your touch conveys the image of the song”.
While the DVD is designed for kids ages 2-9 years old, from my experience it would also be appropriate with older kids who are functioning at a lower developmental level.
The “Meet the Parents & Kids Like You” section is powerful! Hear stories from four parents about how using these techniques impacted their child’s motor planning, body awareness, self awareness, confidence, social skills, connections to siblings (& even pets), relaxation & more.

Here’s what I liked about these products:

I tried out the purple mat in my therapeutic OMazing Kids yoga group at the JD McCarty Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities. Since I only had one of the mats and a group of 4 young boys, I used the mat as a special surprise towards the end of the group. Each child got to take turns getting on the mat, pointing to one of the pose pics and then we all did that pose. This worked GREAT for this group of young boys who had varying disabilities, communication challenges & some behavior issues. The mat provided a way for them to communicate a choice without the risk of yoga cards being damaged (if you work with kids with special needs or behavior challenges you have probably experienced the loss of precious yoga cards). One of the young boys was having a particularly rough day and using the Lazy Lizards mat was the best part of the class for him. He giggled & smiled as we all became “frogs” after he pointed to that pic on the mat.
I like that the mat is eco-friendly, closed cell construction, has rounded corners & is thick enough to provide a little extra cushion.
I like that the pics on the mat are large and that there are only 12 poses on the mat. When a couple of the young boys in our class were unable to make a choice out of a field of 12, I gave them a choice of 2 poses that were next to each other on the mat.
It’s nice to be able to turn the mat over to a plain solid side for kids who might be overwhelmed by the visual stimulation of all the pose pics. Or those who might take it literally that they can only do those poses or do those poses in that order on the mat (you will be able to relate to this if you work with kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders or other special needs).
I liked the playful nature of the DVD and that it showed a realistic depiction of what a yoga class for young kids looks like. Kids were allowed to participate & enjoy the class at their level. While the DVD is marketed for ages 3+, based on my experience I would suggest that it would be most appealing to young kids (ages 3-7). My favorite parts of the DVD were the seed-to-flower & making a slice of pizza sequences.

Other thoughts: While the music in the background of the DVD was usually pleasant, at times it made it difficult to hear the yoga instructor. This also could be overstimulating or make it difficult for kids with Sensory Processing Disorder, Autism, Central Auditory Processing problems or other special needs. Two of the poses may be a little confusing to kids who some experience with yoga: tree (is really more like mountain with arms lifted) & flamingo (is what tree pose traditionally looks like).
