{Giveaway & Review} Kwik Stix Paint Sticks…. super cool & mess-free!

Wow! The Kwik Stix paint sticks are really cool! It’s rare for me to break out the paints during a speech-language therapy session due to the time it takes to set up, potential for spills, kids having difficulty holding/using a paintbrush, dealing with the frustrations of the paint being too runny or mingling into a blob of “who-on earth-knows-what-color-that-is?!”, time it takes to clean up and the finished creation taking forever to dry.  Well Kwik Stix is the perfect solution to all those worries! These will be getting a lot of use in OMazing Kids speech therapy 🙂

The company sent me a classroom set to try out and here’s what I love about them:

 

  • Vivid colors that glide easily onto the paper. Looks & feels similar to a large oil pastel.
  • The shape of the paint stick tip allowed for writing as well as broader strokes.
  • How fast they “dry”. They never really felt “wet” and there are no worries about it bleeding through or wrinkling the paper but it was definitely smudgeproof in less than 90 seconds.
  • Easy to open, twist, hold & use. Kids are used to “glue sticks” and these work in the same way.
  • Affordable. A set of 12 is only $11.99 (about a $1 per stick). If you work with large groups of kids, the price on Amazon.com for the classroom set of 96 is currently only $74.42 (.77 per stick).
  • Certified as “non-toxic” by the Art And Creative Materials Institute, Inc. (ACMI). This is important when purchasing art supplies and was something I wanted to know before agreeing to do this review. {Of course you still want to supervise any use of craft products and prevent them from being licked or eaten…. when you work with kids with special needs you are well aware that oral exploration of items can extend way beyond the infant & toddler years}

The Kwik Stix paint sticks are essentially the same size as a standard glue stick. They are easy for most kids to hold but if you work with kids with special needs that need an adapted way to hold it you could insert one into a cut off piece of pool noodle (see my pic below) or make a holder out of a plastic milk jug handle (see instructions here: http://www.theoatc.org/resources/milkjughandle.asp).

{Review} Fortsy Forts

Have you seen the cool Fortsy Forts? Their Kickstarter campaign was a success. Good news for those who missed the opportunity to preorder as part of that campaign….. They have a few extra forts available for purchase in 2 choices:

I received a prototype of the Fortsy Tower and was impressed with how easy & quick it was to set it up and to take it down. It really did set up in less than 2 minutes. I love the vivid colorful design & that the fabric allows light in. Really cool design! Anyone looking for a play fort that is easy to set up and can be stored in a small carrying bag should seriously consider a Fortsy Fort. I can’t wait to see all the options they come out with in the future.

Here’s what I love about the DVD:

  • Lovely Harmony in My Heart song at the beginning & end of each lesson.
  • Simple “special word” theme for each lesson (gentle, peace, bloom & let it flow).
  • Music in the background is usually subtle & fits the mood of that lesson.
  • Pretty painted backdrop scenes.
  • Cheerful engaging yoga teacher going at a good pace.
  • Several unique ideas that I had not seen in other kids yoga DVDs or books that I have in my collection. Love the “yoga breathing slinky” (similar to what I do with a Hoberman Sphere but a little different and more easily implemented in classrooms or homes since most folks have a slinky or could easily get one at Dollar Tree or similar discount stores), hilarious squeezing the pizza sauce / sunscreen breath, gathering seeds from the toes, watching the bumblebee fly breath, etc.  Kids yoga DVDs are an inexpensive way for Kids Yoga Teachers to get new ideas and then to have a resource to loan out to parents who want to try yoga at home with their child.
  • Each lesson follows the same structure. This helps set a yoga routine & is especially helpful for kids who thrive on predictability (ex: kids with Autism, anxiety or other special needs).

I am loving this new The Social Bunch: Perspectives app by First Words (https://appsto.re/us/JL9H9.i; $8.99 -> will be on sale for $4.99 from November 12-14, 2015; iPad only)!

Fabulous illustrations & voiceovers. Love that each scene has several different questions from the various perspectives and that the app uses errorless teaching strategies with no aversive/negative feedback for wrong answers, has a pause button to allow discussion about the scene, a repeat button to allow the voiceover to be replayed and has built in “wait” visual feedback if kids start rapidly tapping on the screen. Very well thought out app designed by a SLP with a specialty in working with kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This app is very unique and will be quite helpful in my work with kids with ASD. I provided the following feedback to the app developer: It would be great to have a brief tutorial video within the app itself. I loved the idea of being able to draw on the scenes of the app to draw attention to the face, arrow towards what that child is thinking about and adding thought bubbles. Doing this via screenshots in the Paper 53 app is a cool idea but it would be way cooler to be able to do this within the app itself by having a drawing tools area pop up when the app is paused. Thinking of future app updates, it would also be awesome to be able to set up multiple users, track data within the app and e-mail results (many SLPs love those features).

About the app: The Social Bunch: Perspectives helps teach perspective taking and inferencing to students with social language challenges. These skills can be especially challenging for individuals with Autism and other related conditions.

Professionally drawn illustrations are used to teach the idea that different characters can be thinking (and saying) different things at the same time. Five characters are featured within 5 different backgrounds (beach, cafeteria, classroom, bus stop, & playground). Users are asked who might be thinking or saying a particular thought. Sixty scenes containing almost 180 questions (with more planned for the future) are included in this app! Ten different reward animations can be set to appear at different intervals.

All that is required to respond is a touch on the correct character. This app is ideally used with the guidance of an adult (ideally trained in working with social skills).

The Social Bunch: Perspectives was created by speech-language pathologist Jeff Stepen, MS/CCC-SLP. He is a speech-language pathologist with over 17 years of experience in the field of communication disorders. His experience spans infancy to geriatrics. Autism is an area of particular interest for Jeff.

Go Sequencing App Review & Giveaway

Smarty Ears apps are some of my faves as a busy SLP. I can count on them to be well designed & to be customizable to meet the needs of a wide variety of patients. Here are some of the features that make this new Go Sequencing app great:

  • Includes 13 Levels and 3-step, 4-step, 5-step and 6-Step Sequences with varying levels of complexity within each of those.
  • Placeholders for the sequence pics. This makes it clear that there is a specific spot to drag the pics to.
  • The sequences are kid-friendly and you can customize the sequence database by toggling on/off specific activity sequences.
  • Option to set up multiple users & track data. You can use the app with 1 to 5 users at a time and each user can be at a different level.
  • Includes three languages: English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
  • The option to create your own custom sequences. This will be great for including pictures of high interest items for that particular child and sequences that are meaningful in the context of their daily routines.
  • Lots of customization settings.
  • Multicultural illustrations & high quality voiceover.

I only ran into two things that were small concerns as I tested out the app on my iPad Air running iOS 8.4. I’ve already messaged them to the app developer and am guessing that they can be easily fixed in a future app update:

  • I couldn’t add a user photo. Of course I can still use the avatars but many of my patients love seeing themselves within an app. I tried a hard reboot on my iPad but it didn’t resolve the issue. I don’t know if this is an issue on other versions of the iOS operating system. (I am specifically holding off on updating my main therapy iPad to iOS 9 until Apple works out the issues with Guided Access and all of my AAC apps have been update to be compatible).
  • When dragging the final step into a sequence the last part of the voiceover is cut off by the “very good” feedback. It would be nice for the voiceover to finish playing before the feedback plays. The same thing happens when tapping a picture before the voiceover is finished on the one before it.

That’s one of my favorite things about apps. Good app developers are open to feedback and are quick to roll out updates to fix them. They also often add new app content. Where else do you buy something and then get free updates to the newest version? Cool huh?!
