Weave Chat AAC added to the Feature Matching Chart for Robust Android AAC Apps

Weave Chat AAC

Weave Chat AAC has added quite a bit more content and features and is now a fairly robust AAC app that’s totally free. They offer apps on three major app stores: iOS, Google Play (Android) & Amazon.

Updated this blog post on 8/12/23: That Android phone is still available on Amazon and is even a little less expensive now ($49.88). The case is still also available and is less expensive ($11.99). If you put the free Android version of Weave Chat AAC on it (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.weavechat.weavechat) you can have fairly robust pocket-sized symbol-based AAC for under $62 (+tax). The adult text-to-speech voices from Samsung & Google are pretty good. If you want Acapela voices, the Weave Chat AAC app and a few others allow use of the one you have purchased and set as a default within the Acapela app. That would be a way to add high quality child voices. Prices vary. I just purchased the child African American English voices (Tiana and Malik) for $7.99 each. The great thing is you only have to purchase the Acapela voices once and then can use them in any AAC app that supports use of them. I have previously purchased Ella & Josh (USA English) + Valeria & Emilio (USA Spanish). That app has voices available to purchase in several languages.

So for under $70 (+tax) you can have fairly robust pocket-sized symbol-based AAC with Weave Chat AAC using a high quality Acapela voice.

Free Type / ǝdλ⊥ Large Text Typing App with Flipped Dual Message Window & Spoken Content

Although the free Type / ǝdλ app (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/type-%C7%9Dd%CE%BB/id1020070997) hasn’t been updated in many years it currently works on my two iPad 8th gens on iOS 14.5 & iOS 15.4.1 and my iPhone 11 on iOS 14.8.

My guess is this app is the simplicity of this app has allowed it to continue to work without being updated.

I’m sharing it as something that is helpful when you need large text and a dual message window. It is easy to change the size of the text by pinching in/out on the message window.

It could be a good option for AAC users who want something simple to use on their iPhone or iPad and prefer not to have voice output.

But you could enable a voice to have the text spoken by having the following toggled on in the device Settings (gray gear): Accessibility – Spoken Content – Speak Selection. This section is also where you can choose an iOS voice, adjust the rate of speech, have text highlighted when spoken, edit pronunciations, etc.

The FREE Xodo app is my favorite PDF reader. The search feature in it is fabulous. It can be used on any platform and computers. I just noticed that their former website (http://www.xodo.com) redirects to a new website. Go to this section to use it to view PDFs in a web browser: https://pdf.online/pdf-viewer.

They also added a link to this: https://www.xodo.com/app/#/. And an alternative viewer: https://www.xodo.com/app-old/#/

If you have any issues try a different web browser.

Important info for those wanting to view the Feature Matching Chart PDF on a Mac computer: Save the PDF to your computer and then open the PDF online in Xodo: https://www.xodo.com/app/#/ or https://www.xodo.com/app-old/#/

I had a couple of patients with Autism who had a high interest in animals that would have LOVED this app!

In particular I remember one who had a very driven passion for animals so we got to see a peek into his amazing skills when we tapped into that high interest. I used the I Read – Animals (Reading Comprehension for Kids) app by Nerea Sanchez Dominguez (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/i-read-animals-reading-comprehension-for-kids/id940688959) & the First Nouns app by KIS Publishing LLC (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/first-nouns/id930990828, before it switched to only being accessible to their online school) and was blown away by his ability to type and spell animal names. Ended up taking video to prove it to the rest of the team and immediately went through the process to get him an iPad with a robust AAC app. Speak For Yourself ended up being a great match for him since it has only 1-2 hits to get to any word and uses the native iOS keyboard. I think about him often and wonder how he’s doing 😊

Over 100 Free & Affordable Apps + Boom Cards to Target AAC Core Vocabulary – list compiled by Angela Moorad, MS, CCC-SLP, OMazing Kids (updated 3/12/23)

Over 100 Free & Affordable Apps + Boom Cards to Target AAC Core Vocabulary

The main thing I look for when searching for apps to use for targeting core vocabulary for AAC users are open-ended play, book or sticker apps that are intuitive, have large engaging graphics, are ad-free, have the option to toggle off any background music or it is very subtle (not over stimulating) while still leaving on any sound effects or voiceovers and any outside links are well hidden behind a parental gate. You can use these apps to target the same core vocabulary that you would with a “real” toy or activity. Think of it as the “virtual” version of that. Lock the “play” iPad into the app that you have selected by enabling Guided Access. If the child is using an iPad as their “talker”, then it is also locked into their AAC app via Guided Access.

  • Prices, availability & device/iOS compatibility were all checked in the USA App Store and website links were all working at the time this post was written (5:00pm CST on 7/22/20). Prices may vary outside the USA based on the exchange rate.
  • Some of these apps may not be available for download on your device if you are not running the minimum required iOS.
  • Many of these apps are “iOS Universal”. Those can be used on an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.
  • Some apps have IAPs (in-app purchases) for additional items. So after you have installed those apps and purchased anything that you wanted be sure to adjust the settings on your iPad to prevent unintended purchases.
  • All of the apps on this list were priced at $3.99 or less at the time of this post… and a lot of them are FREE:

Lots of great early readers with opportunities to target Core Vocabulary. I love that you can tap on a word to see a simple definition & record yourself saying the word. The speech recognition capabilities appear to be accurate so SLPs will enjoy trying it out. More advanced readers are available and books are available in English & Spanish. I also like that it saves books to “read again” and you can tap a star to save a book to your “favorites”. I’m finding this app much easier to search, navigate and use than Epic…. and it’s always FREE. See more info: https://rivet.area120.com. Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.area120.studybuddy.sagaflutter, Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07V7GYNCK. And for those who love using Boom Cards there are several great decks targeting Core Vocabulary.

In case anyone needs help getting started with Boom Cards:

1. Sign up for the free Starter account: https://wow.boomlearning.com

2. Install the free app on your iPad. Boom Cards by Omega Labs, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/boom-cards/id1041141473, iOS Universal, iOS 10.0 or later, FREE). If you use an Android tablet look for the app in the Google Play App Store.

3. Then start searching through their store for Boom Card decks. There are lots of great free ones. Every Friday you can search by “flashfridayfreebie” and find several. But you can find others just by looking through the store. It’s kind of like Teachers Pay Teachers in that many of the creators have at least one free item. The “paid” ones are on a point system. Many of the sellers over on TPT also have Boom Cards there. When you download one there it will contain a link to unlock the deck over on the Boom Learning site.

4. I haven’t tried creating my own Boom Card decks yet so I don’t know how easy it is… I just recently started looking at them to see what all the buzz was about.

5. If you’ve followed my page for many years and have used lots of apps, Boom Cards seem to be the fad right now (like when apps first came out). But even the best Boom Card decks that I’ve seen aren’t anywhere near the quality of a well designed app. It will be interesting to see how sustainable Boom Cards will be since most of the folks are looking for free decks.

170 Free iOS Apps for Occupational Therapists – list compiled by Angela Moorad, MS, CCC-SLP, Founder of OMazing Kids

Here is a list of 170 iOS apps that are currently FREE that pediatric Occupational Therapists may find helpful to use in therapy or as carryover activities to share with families. Some of the apps could target multiple goals but I’ve tried to generally organize them in the list. Most of these apps are not just for use by OTs. I used most of these apps but for different therapeutic reasons as a SLP. And many of them can just be used for fun. I downloaded and tried out all apps before adding them to the list. All apps prices and availability were verified in the USA App Store at the time I wrote this post at 6:00pm CST on 5/13/20. You can save the PDF of this post in the iBooks app on your iPad and then tap on each link to go to that app in the App Store (it’s an 8-page PDF).  I only have access to the USA App Store so be sure to check prices before downloading in other countries.

Tips:

  1. Many of the apps have IAPs (in-app purchases) to add extra features or have unsecured links so make sure the iPad is in “airplane mode” and toggle off the ability to download IAPs in the Settings area BEFORE opening the app. Even apps with “secured links” could be hacked by some kids so it’s always wise to go ahead do these two things before using apps with kids. I typically avoid apps with ads (some can be blocked via “airplane mode” but others cannot).  It’s also wise to use Guided Access to prevent exiting the app you are using.
  2. If you like a “lite” version of an app, it is always a good idea to see if there is a full paid version of the app to purchase vs. using an IAP to upgrade within a free lite app. I’ve had enough problems with IAPs and trying to restore IAPs to avoid them as much as possible. Also most schools & public agencies have purchasing regulations that make it difficult or impossible to purchase items via IAP but can purchase a full paid app. This is the same reason that I typically avoid apps that require a subscription.
  3. If you are looking for Android apps, the quickest way to see if an app has an Android version is to copy the name of an app and then paste into the search area on the Google Play app store or Amazon app store. If the app is available it may not be free on those platforms and/or may contain ads so look closely at each app description. Also look at reviews to see how well apps function since Android versions of apps may not be updated as frequently as iOS apps.

Disclaimers: I’m an SLP not an OT. But I worked with enough fabulous OTs and COTAs over my career and connected virtually with a few others to have a general idea of the types of apps that may be helpful to them. Of course every app that I share will not be a good fit for every child so it’s up to you to determine the ones to use with your particular patients. The purpose of this list is to share free resources but I also want folks to know there are hundreds of fabulous apps that are often very affordably priced or may even be free on a particular day. Please see this blog post and follow OMazing Kids on social media: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2016/12/31/the-ipad-the-slp-in-2017-app-list-for-slps-sorted-by-goal-area/. I plan on updating that huge post soon.

Looking for apps to make your own jigsaw puzzles for specific high interest areas? Here are three apps that allow you to import pics to create your own puzzles:

  1. Puzzlfy app is my favorite for making simple puzzles: Puzzlfy – Jigsaw Puzzles by Radius60 Studios, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/puzzlfy-jigsaw-puzzles/id880679870 (may not work on iOS 11 or later).
  2. Jigsaw Puzzle Collection HD by Veraxen Ltd, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/jigsaw-puzzle-collection-hd/id642831690
  3. Jigsaw Box Puzzles by Sparkle Apps, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/jigsaw-box-puzzles/id374251470

For all of three you’ll need to save pics that you want to use to create puzzles to the Camera Roll on your iPad. The downside of these apps are the ads & IAPs but you can block them by putting the iPad into “airplane mode” after you are done downloading pics & before you open the app. It can be expensive to buy the in-app purchases to remove the ads. You’ll also want to toggle off the ability to purchase IAPs as an extra safeguard in the Settings area on your iPad.

Want to suggest a free iOS app to be added to this list? The best way to reach me is via Facebook messaging over on my OMazing Kids page. I’m pretty picky so they need to be well designed apps and be transparent/honest about any IAPs or subscriptions. Please send the link from the USA App Store so I can download and try it out.

It took me quite a bit of time to compile this list so please “tag” OMazing Kids when sharing it on social media and do not copy/paste it onto other blogs or documents or upload it to servers. I have it available here on my blog and plan on keeping my blog up for the foreseable future.

Thanks,

Here are 30 free kids game apps that have enough content to be helpful in therapy sessions. A few have in-app purchases or ads so be sure to have proper safeguards in your iPad settings. Some are older apps and may not work with iOS 11. Some may not always be free so be sure to double check prices before downloading.
