I had a couple of patients with Autism who had a high interest in animals that would have LOVED this app!

In particular I remember one who had a very driven passion for animals so we got to see a peek into his amazing skills when we tapped into that high interest. I used the I Read – Animals (Reading Comprehension for Kids) app by Nerea Sanchez Dominguez (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/i-read-animals-reading-comprehension-for-kids/id940688959) & the First Nouns app by KIS Publishing LLC (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/first-nouns/id930990828, before it switched to only being accessible to their online school) and was blown away by his ability to type and spell animal names. Ended up taking video to prove it to the rest of the team and immediately went through the process to get him an iPad with a robust AAC app. Speak For Yourself ended up being a great match for him since it has only 1-2 hits to get to any word and uses the native iOS keyboard. I think about him often and wonder how he’s doing 😊

I purchased this app myself and love it so much I left a review on the App Store, am posting this here on my blog and will be sharing on social media. Part of a conscious effort to help support kids app developers 😊

{The iPad & the SLP in 2020}: Articulation Apps for SLPs (listed by category) – by Angela Moorad, MS, CCC-SLP at OMazing Kids

{The iPad & the SLP in 2020}: Articulation Apps for SLPs (listed by category)

I’m working on a big updated blog post “{The iPad & the SLP in 2020} App List for SLPs ~ sorted by goal area” that will be a new version of my original post from late December 2016 (https://bit.ly/3iHLB8r). Lots of great apps have disappeared from the App Store since I wrote that. One of the most prominent examples is the beloved Speech with Milo apps that are all missing from the App Store (not even available for redownload from your “Purchased” area. See this blog post with details: https://bit.ly/34aOLO4). Milo has a HUGE fan base… beloved by SLPs and kids everywhere. See these posts: https://bit.ly/3gbxmaa & https://bit.ly/2YfpQoO.

Rather than updating that post I’m writing a new one. The previous post will be left up as a “time capsule” of apps that existed in an era I think of as the “golden age of apps” plus it helps me know what to search for in my “purchased” area on the App Store (apps are sometimes still available there even when there are no longer available for purchase but it can be tricky to find them if you are an app hoarder).

Since articulation apps are some of the ones that I receive questions about frequently, I decided to go ahead and share this updated section that I just finished. This is a curated post of apps that I have personally used. Think of it as a bigger “sneak peek” at what’s coming.

  • Availability and features were all checked at the time this was created (8/17/20 at 12:00pm CST). Availability and pricing may vary outside of the USA. App features change over time as updates are released.
  • Check iOS requirements for each app in the descriptions in the App Store. Some older apps may not work on newer devices and newer apps may not work on older devices.
  • I have included links in a separate section at the end of this post if an app is also available for Android devices on the Google Play store or on Amazon for Kindle Fire.
  • Apps in each category are listed in alphabetical order unless otherwise specified.

Articulation:

It’s great to have several different types of apps to use based on that child’s specific goals and the type of therapy approach:

📋 All-purpose artic apps: One of the most frequent questions I see is “What is the best articulation app?”. My answer is… It depends on what features you need the most. There are features that I love in each of these apps. I’m blessed to have all of them in my therapy toolbox. I wish I could take the best features out of each of them and combine them into one app….. but since that’s not possible here are a few thoughts in this blog post with a comprehensive comparison of features in the top 5: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2020/08/13/comparison-of-the-top-5-all-purpose-articulation-apps-for-slps-in-2020-includes-current-app-sale-info-by-angela-moorad-ms-ccc-slp-at-omazing-kids/.

Ranked based on my extensive experience using them + data collected on which ones are recommended most frequently by SLPs in a variety of groups on social media:

🔬 Assessment: I found it very helpful to have artic assessment apps as a means of informally assessing areas of need for ongoing goal development. (ranked based on my extensive use):

#1: Articulation Test Center Pro by Little Bee Speech, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/articulation-test-center-pro/id700440156 (free lite version: Articulation Test Center by Little Bee Speech, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/articulation-test-center/id904854670)

#2: Articulation Assessment ToolKit by Smarty Ears, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/articulation-assessment-toolkt/id371280343 (formerly called Sunny Articulation Phonology Test Kit) *** Update 8/21/20: The Articulation Assessment ToolKit app (originally known as Sunny Articulation Phonology Test Kit) is no longer available for purchase in the App Store. For those who already own it, you can find it in your “Purchased” area. The app will continue to work on your iPad but no future updates are anticipated since the company has released a new version. They replaced it with the Articulation Assessment ToolKit Plus app that allows you to complete 3 tests for free and afterwards has IAPs (purchase 5 tests for $5.99, Monthly Unlimited Testing subscription for $5.99 per month, Yearly Unlimited Testing subscription for $37.99 per year). AAT Plus by Smarty Ears, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/aat-plus/id1527491925, iPad only, iOS 11.0 or later. I compared this new app side-by-side with the older fully paid version and only noticed one difference (the background color on a screener is now blue instead of yellow…. which I found to be an improvement with the blue being easier on my eyes). I suggest trying out the R Screener as one of your free tests since I used it quite a bit when working on /r/ and found it helpful.

#3: S.W.I.P.E by Ciaran Dowds, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/s-w-i-p-e/id1043259503 (The Single Word Instant Phonological Evaluation is designed for SLTs in the UK so there are differences in wording and pronunciation compared to what we use in the USA, free lite version: S.W.I.P.E Lite by Ciaran Dowds, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/s-w-i-p-e-lite/id1146271711)

In-depth review comparing the Articulation Test Center, Sunny Articulation Phonology Test Kit & Test of Articulation and Phonology (iTap) apps: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2016/05/07/articulation-testing-apps-reviews-and-comparison-of-articulation-test-center-sunny-articulation-phonology-test-kit-test-of-articulation-and-phonology-itap/. Features have been added in each app since my review but my ranking remains the same. However you need to be aware that the iTAP Pro app by Smarty Ears (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/itap-pro/id1083295608, formerly called Test of Articulation and Phonology (iTap) recently switched to a subscription based app. I see some potential problems in using iTap Pro as a “standardized” test. The test was only normed on 199 children ages 3;0 to 10;11 in central Texas. This may not be an issue if you are dealing with private pay clients but will likely pose a problem with other payers such as Medicaid or private insurance.

🗣 Auditory bombardment:

– Articulation Scenes by Smarty Ears, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/articulation-scenes/id498857302 – hidden pictures section

– Articulation Station Pro by Little Bee Speech, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/articulation-station-pro/id491998279 – Level 2 Stories are great for auditory bombardment

– Kids Sound Lab Pro by Raddlist, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/kids-sound-lab-pro/id681462426

– Little Stories Pro by Little Bee Speech, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/little-stories-pro/id1228283813 (also a free lite version: Little Stories Lite by Little Bee Speech, https://apps.apple.com/us/app/little-stories-lite/id1327557030). I was super excited when they updated this app to be compatible back to iOS 9.0 (http://www.littlebeespeech.com/blog/little-stories-app-available-for-ios-9-up/). That allows those of us using iPads running older iOS to use this fabulous app. See this post for lots of great tips and handouts related to this app: http://www.littlebeespeech.com/blog/slp-summit-follow-up-january-2018. Cool to be able to use an app for multiple purposes (early literacy, language and articulation).

💥 Boom Cards: Read this post to get started: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2020/07/31/1-2-3-easy-steps-to-getting-started-with-boom-cards/ then start searching on their store (https://wow.boomlearning.com/search?collection=Decks&keyword=articulation&sort=price&order=1) and on Teachers Pay Teachers (https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Browse/PreK-12-Subject-Area/Speech-Therapy/Search:Boom%20Cards%20articulation/Order:Price-Asc) to find Boom Card decks for the sounds you want to target. I suggest trying a free item by that creator first to see an example of the quality before buying paid products. I search on both sites but prefer TPT since many creators have updated printable items there to add Boom Cards to it so then you end up getting printables + Boom Cards for the same price. I also find it easier to filter and find what I want more quickly on TPT. But it’s worth checking directly in the Boom Learning store too since many folks only offer items there.

🛑 *** WARNING: Stay far, far, far away from any apps by Blub Blub, Inc. (First Blubs, Speech Blubs, Lingo Blubs, Reading Blubs or any future apps that they may develop). That app developer has a history of misusing names of several SLP bloggers to promote his apps, is charging ridiculously high subscription rates & is luring parents and therapists into trying their “free trial” to then end up paying for a subscription. See my in depth post here: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2017/07/03/app-warning-do-not-install-the-update-for-first-blubs-concerns-i-have-regarding-the-pricing-on-the-new-speech-blubs-app/ & here: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2016/08/21/free-app-alert-first-blubs-unlock-all-22-animals-free-this-week/. Looking for Android articulation apps? Unfortunately the Speech Essentials App (http://speechessentialsapp.com, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speechessentials.speechessentials) appears to have disappeared from the Google Play App Store. I hadn’t personally used it since I don’t own any Android devices but based on reviews it appeared to be pretty good. (Update 10/21/20: the Speech Essentials App has returned to the Google Play App Store but there are several negative reviews so I suggest trying out the free content (/b/) and reading through the most recent reviews before purchasing any in-app purchases)

Here are links to Android versions of apps I have listed above. I can’t comment on how well they work on that platform but it will at least be a good starting point in your search:

🛑 Please heed my warning above about the Speech Blubs app or any other apps by Blub Blub, Inc. above. I would stay far, far, far away from anything from them.

📥 Want to suggest iOS articulation apps to be added to this post? The best way to reach me is via Facebook messaging over on my OMazing Kids page.

If it’s a free app, please send the link from the USA App Store so I can download and try it out. If it’s a paid app and you are the app developer, please send the link from the USA App Store so I can look at the info before you send a promo code. I want to make sure that one of my iPads or iPhone is compatible in order to try it out.

It took quite a bit of time to compile this list so please mention OMazing Kids when sharing it on social media and do not copy/paste it onto other blogs or documents or upload the post to servers. I have it available here on my blog and plan on keeping my blog up for the foreseeable future.

Over 44 under $4: Over 44 iOS Early Numeracy Apps under $4.00 each (34 free) + tips on using them for SLPs

.

Over 44 under $4: Here’s a list of over 44 iOS early numeracy apps. In this post I am sharing a mix of paid and free apps that I have used and found to be well designed and helpful.

* Free: 35 apps
* Affordable ($.99 – $3.99 – what you might pay for an item from the Target Dollar Spot, a latte from Starbucks, an item on Teachers Pay Teachers or a Boom Card deck): 13 apps
.
Why would an SLP use early numeracy apps?
1. A fun way to target plurals.
2. A fun way to work on concepts of “more” & “less”.
3. Many include early vocabulary.
4. Many kids with Autism and other special needs have a high interest in the predictability and repetition of numbers & counting so these apps are motivating. I had several patients who would do all kinds of other “work” to earn a couple of minutes playing a numbers/counting app at the end of a session. The same is true of alphabet apps.
5. The predictable nature of counting lends itself well to working on intraverbal fill-ins.
6. The abacus style apps can be fun to track productions in articulation drills.

Want to suggest an iOS app to be added to this list? The best way to reach me is via Facebook messaging over on my OMazing Kids page. I’m pretty picky so they need to be well designed apps and be transparent/honest about any IAPs or subscriptions and not have any ads. If it’s a free app, please send the link from the USA App Store so I can download and try it out. If it’s a paid app and you are the app developer, please send the link from the USA App Store so I can look at the info before you send a promo code. I want to make sure that one of my iPads is compatible in order to try it out.

It took me quite a bit of time to compile this list so please “tag” OMazing Kids when sharing it on social media and do not copy/paste it onto other blogs or documents or upload it to servers. I have it available here on my blog and plan on keeping my blog up for the foreseable future.

Thanks,
