{Book Review} Nice Work, Franklin! by Suzanne Tripp Jurmain

Nice Work FRanklin

.

Nice Work, Franklin! by Suzanne Tripp Jurmain is a cool new kids picture book about Franklin Roosevelt. I especially like the messages of persevering despite setbacks & disabilities. It would be a nice addition to classroom lessons on the USA presidents, the Great Depression and/or disabilities.  It’s not necessarily a book that I could see myself using much in speech-language therapy sessions or kids yoga classes so I’ll be passing along my copy to one of the teachers at the facility where I work 🙂

.

As one of our most inspirational and determined presidents, Franklin Roosevelt overcame his disability to lead the country out of the Great Depression.

Franklin Roosevelt idolized his cousin Teddy Roosevelt. He started wearing eyeglasses like Teddy, he spoke like Teddy, and he held the same public offices as Teddy. But then one day his life changed—he got sick. He developed polio and he could no longer walk. But Franklin also had Teddy’s determination, so after physical therapy and hard work, he ran for governor of New York and won. Then a different kind of sickness, the Great Depression, spread across the country: Banks were closing, and thousands lost their jobs.

Franklin said that if you have a problem, solve it. If one solution doesn’t work, try another but above all TRY SOMETHING. So Franklin ran for president, and on Inauguration Day, he made it clear that together they would conquer this sickness. He got to work creating jobs and slowly America started getting better.

Book Review, Lesson Plan Ideas & Free Printable: Breathe by Scott Magoon

Breathe book review

.

Check out this awesome new addition to the OMazing Kids collection of fabulous kids picture books: “Breathe” by Scott Magoon.

.

breathe-9781442412583.in01

I saw it mentioned by my friend Jenny at Happy Planet Yoga and got a great deal on a new hardcover copy for only $1.98 + shipping for a total of $5.97 on Amazon!  I always check out the options for purchasing a new or used in good condition book before purchasing to find the best deals.

.

breathe-9781442412583.in02

.

I love the calming illustrations & short text on each 2-page spread. Every few pages there is a reminder to “Breathe”.  This book would be perfect for a whole session devoted to various yoga breathing techniques or you could go with an arctic ocean-themed kids yoga class based on the opportunities in the illustrations (whale, fish, crab, puffin, jellyfish, sun, sea kelp (forward fold), sunken ship (boat), mountain,  mindful listening to ocean sounds, polar bear, etc..). The book also has several great messages that could be used as mantras:  Breathe. Explore. Make new friends. Fear not. Find another way up. Love and be loved. Dream big.

.

breathe-9781442412583.in04

.

The “Under the Sea” guided relaxation on page 38 in “Imaginations Fun Relaxation Stories and Meditations for Kids” will be perfect for this theme.

Speech & language ideas for the book “Happy” by Pharrell Williams

image.

Speech & language ideas for the book “Happy” by Pharrell Williams:

* say (saying words with articulation targeted sounds)
* sunshine (name 3 things that are hot, 3 things at a beach, 3 things you see on vacation)
* break (multiple meaning: give another meaning for the word break)
* hot air balloon (name 3 things that can fly)
* space (multiple meaning: give another meaning for the word space)
* air, care (rhyming, working on vocalic /r/)
* happy (name 3 things that make you feel happy)
* truth (tie into an activity on listening for facts vs. opinions or true vs. false)
* I’ll be just fine (learn 3 strategies to deal with stress or teasing)
* can’t nothing bring me down (discussion on things they can do to be in control of their own emotions)
* synonyms for: say, break, baby, happy, true, bring
* contractions: I’m, she’s, I’ll, don’t, here’s, level’s
* idioms: walking on sunshine, full of hot air, went through the roof
.
Most good kids picture books are full of opportunities for tie-ins to speech & language goals. The key is to look at the text & illustrations for inspiration and to think outside the box. 🙂

“The Day the Crayons Came Home” by Drew Daywalt & Oliver Jeffers

.

This sequel is hilarious! Each two page spread contains a postcard from one of Duncan’s beloved crayons each asking for help to find their way back home.  Poor crayons…. they have been through being broken, melted, eaten, sharpened and more. Will they all make it back home safely?  You’ll have to read the book to find out 😉

Penguin Young Readers 12 Days of Picture Books Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway Day 3 – “Happy” by Pharrell Williams

image

.

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review this new kids picture book by Pharrell Williams! I am a pediatric speech-language pathologist and have numerous kids on my caseload who LOVE this song. It could easily be the musical mantra for kids with special needs. It’s by far the most motivating song on my iPad that will consistently get a response and get kids to activate the screen to independently turn on the song via the Touch Switch app by Goatella (https://appsto.re/us/8Ib5B.i).

.

image

.

What’s cool about the picture book inspired by the lyrics from this song is that it features gorgeous photos of kids acting out what those lyrics mean to them. Nope… no Minions to be found in this book. Instead the focus is on kids and they did a nice job with multicultural representation (I do wish they had included a few kids with special needs in the photos since they are not often featured in kids picture books and this would have made the book even more fabulous). The photos are embellished with fun illustrations and the words are in a large easy to read font arranged in an interesting way on each 2-page spread.

.

image

.

Having this song in book form caused me to really focus on the powerful lyrics. Here are some of my faves with messages of limitless possibilities & overcoming obstacles … especially powerful for kids with special needs to hear:

“I’m a hot air balloon that could go into space”

“Well, gimme all you got and don’t hold back. Well, I should probably warn you, I’ll be just fine.”

“Bring me down… can’t nothing… Bring me down… my level’s too high… Bring me down… can’t nothing… Bring me down”

.

image

.

An added bonus for kids yoga teachers is that many of the pages lend themselves well to kids yoga activities. Here are the opportunities for kids yoga that I spotted in the book: sun breath & stretch, sun salutations, palm tree, ocean breath, hot air balloon visualization, balloon breath, rocket ship blast off, kite, rooftop partners, clapping to beat, drumming, lotus mudra crown, raindrop pats, puddle stomping, umbrella, airplane & yoga freeze dance to the song “Happy”.

A peek inside my special needs acceptance & awareness library….

image

.

One of the frequent requests I receive is for suggestions regarding resources to help kids understand & appreciate special needs. The reason why I have a variety of resources for this is that there is no “one size fits all” resource. Some of the books in my library are geared towards group or classroom settings (but can also be modified for individual use). Some are geared towards specific special needs. Some are more subtle with general themes of respect, compassion & caring. Some are new and some have been in my library since I started my career as a SLP over 25 years ago. My library is frequently expanding but here’s what it includes at the moment:

.

  • A Rainbow of Friends by P.K. Hallinan
  • All Kinds of Friends by Ellen B. Senisi
  • ASD and Me: Learning About High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder by Teresa DeMars
  • Can I Tell You About Autism?: A guide for friends, family and professionals by Jude Welton
  • Do-si-Do with Autism Friendship Kit by Sarah Stup
  • How Katie Got a Voice (and a cool nickname) by Patricia L. Mervine, SLP
  • I Like Birthdays…. It’s the parties I’m not sure about! by Laurie Renke
  • Ian’s Walk: A Story About Autism by Laurie Lears
  • In Jesse’s Shoes: Appreciating Kids With Special Needs by Beverly Lewis
  • Leah’s Voice by Lori DeMonia
  • Love for Logan by Lori DeMonia
  • Meet the Beaker Kids: A book for anyone who’s ever had “enough” by Shanna Philipson
  • Show You Understand: Learning about Compassion and Caring by Regina G. Burch
  • Someone Special Just Like You by Tricia Brown
  • Sometimes My Brother: Helping Kids Understand Autism Through a Sibling’s Eyes by Angie Healy
  • Special People, Special Ways by Arlene Maguire
  • The Autism Acceptance Book: Being a Friend to Someone with Autism by Ellen Sabin
  • The One and Only Special Me by Rozanne Lanczak Williams
  • The Special Needs Acceptance Book: Being a Friend to Someone with Special Needs by Ellen Sabin
  • This is Gabriel Making Sense of School: A Book About Sensory Processing Disorder by Hartley Steiner
  • We Can Do It! by Laura Dwight

.

I only have listed books that I have in my personal library. If you are an author of a book or resource geared towards helping kids understand special needs and would like me to review your work OR if you have questions about any of the resources I have listed, the best way to reach me is via Facebook Messaging on my OMazing Kids Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/messages/174264525957894.

(My e-mail is listed below but I am getting tons of spam mail due to using that account for social media and blogging…. to the point that I may not receive the e-mail or it being buried among the spam.)

The Animals’ Santa: an OMazing Kids Lesson Plan & free printable coloring page

The Animals Santa book

The Animals’ Santa by Jan Brett is definitely a new fave in OMazing Kids! Her illustrations are a feast for the eyes and include amazing details on the sides that give clues about what else is going on in the story.

The book has the following opportunities for kids yoga activities:

  • Bunny Breaths
  • Snowy Tree
  • Forest of Snowy Trees
  • Lemming (mouse)
  • Heart-Shaped Mudra (for the heart-shaped wishing stone)
  • Bell Mindful Walking
  • Raven (bird)
  • Squirrel (use brown pom-poms as acorns to stretch and pick or do Toe-ga to pick up with toes)
  • Arctic Fox (cat pose + sign for “fox”)
  • Badger (big steps pretending to walk on snowshoes)
  • Polar Bear (extended Child Pose)
  • Moose (Seated Twist + hands on head as big antlers)
  • Porcupine (Lotus Mudra – fingers look like the quills)
  • Wolf (Upward Facing Dog)
  • Broken Ice Chimes Mindful Listening (small wind chimes or chime bar)
  • Snowy Owl (Gyan Mudra at eyes)

Playlist Suggestions:

  • It’s Snowing by Bobbie Lancaster
  • Silent Nights CD from Relax Kids
  • Snow by Jim Valley
  • Snow Angel & Snowy Tree on Musical Yoga Adventures CD
  • Snow Song by Mary Lu Walker
  • Snowfall by Will Hale & the Tadpole Parade

Craft Idea: Make Wishing Stones by decorating small river rocks or glass stones with permanent markers, stickers or paint. Here’s one example: http://club.chicacircle.com/glass-painted-wishing-stones/ and another one using melted crayons: http://artfulparent.com/2014/05/diy-wishing-stones-friend.html. To promote the idea of “giving”, each child could make a wishing stone to give away as a gift. Free card to go with the gift: http://www.janbrett.com/pdf/animal_santa_christmas_card.pdf
