{Free Printable} If You Give a Mouse a Brownie PlayDoh Smash Mat

My patients always love PlayDoh smash mats so I made this one to target vocabulary & the circular story sequence in the fun new book “If You Give a Mouse a Brownie”. {Tip: When using smash mats it helps to already have small balls of PlayDoh pre-rolled so you don’t use an entire can on the first two spots (true tales from the speechie room… lol!)}

Three Fun Books: Mr. Cookie Baker, Truck Driver Tom & Firefighter Frank (ideas for therapy & AAC)

I love Monica Wellington’s books! Excited that her publisher sent me these three books to add to my OMazing Kids library. Lots of fun possibilities for targeting goals in speech therapy:

* Firefighter Frank board book (smaller size and sturdy pages make board books especially easy to incorporate side-by-side with AAC; lots of great opportunities for verbs: work, wash, visit, sit, cook, eat, slide, jump, climb, go, run, spray, rescue, sleep; adjectives: clean, fast, tall, hungry, tired; prepositions: at, in, out, down, up, off; and additional core vocabulary for AAC users: is, ready, when)

* Mr. Cookie Baker (lots of great opportunities for verbs: make, count, measure, mix, roll, cut, bake, decorate, come, show, sell, close; adjectives: early, delicious, colored, hungry, proud, crowded; and additional core vocabulary for AAC users: get, make, for, out, with, in)

I’m always looking for fun and motivating ways to target core vocabulary for my patients that are AAC users. I use a variety of toys, books, sensory activities & apps to provide lots of opportunities for practice in the short amount of time I have with them in OMazing Kids speech therapy each week. My iPad loaded with fabulous apps is one of the best tools in my SLP therapy toolbox!

Tips: Apps come and go frequently in the App Store. New apps are released. Sometimes older apps disappear while they are being updated. Sometimes they never reappear. So it’s always wise to periodically back up your iPad by plugging it into a computer logged into your iTunes account. This insures you won’t lose any apps that may disappear from the App Store. I originally got most of these apps by grabbing them quickly when they were free for a day or two. Watch my OMazing Kids Facebook page and AppPeeps Facebook group where I share these as “free app alerts”. Others I got on sale or via doing app reviews.

The main thing I look for when searching for apps to use for targeting core vocabulary for AAC users in therapy sessions are open-ended play apps that are intuitive, have large engaging graphics, are ad-free, have the option to toggle off any background music or it is very subtle (not over stimulating) while still leaving on any sound effects or voiceovers and any outside links are well hidden behind a parental gate.

Of course these apps should be on a separate iPad from their “talker” so you can “talk” while playing (Update 3/12/23: Some apps could also be used in Split View or Slide Over)

I use these apps to target the same core vocabulary that I would with a “real” toy or activity. Think of it as the “virtual” version of that. I lock the “play” iPad into the app that I have selected by enabling Guided Access. If the child is using an iPad as their “talker”, then it is also locked into their AAC app via Guided Access.

Symbol Supported Language Stimulation: visual supports to expand verbal utterances

You are a “vintage” SLP if you remember using the Fokes Sentence Builder as a visual means of teaching kids how words go together to form sentences. For the past 27 years, I’ve infused that concept into how I model language. The pictures in the old Fokes were very outdated plus the copy of it at the facility where I work was very musty. So I use Boardmaker, the Custom Boards app by Smarty Ears, the GoTalk Now Plus AAC app with SymbolStix and PCS library add-ons (can export as PDF) or the Tools2Talk+ app to make my own customized visual supports. I’m “old school” and am still using a Boardmaker CD on a computer. I’ve considered using one of the many online options but haven’t so far since I didn’t want to have to pay for an ongoing subscription.

Most of the kids on my caseload have Autism or similar diagnoses and respond well to use of visual supports. For kids who are verbal, I use a variety of visual supports to show them how to create sentences. The picture at the top of this post is an example of my latest creation to go with my vintage Illco Sesame Street House (circa 1988) and wooden Fisher Price Mini Bus and Little People (circa 1969). It’s always cool to see how well my patients respond with use of these visual supports. Instead of imitating a word or maybe two, they are much more likely to imitate a whole utterance and then often use that utterance again spontaneously within that session.

For kids who are AAC users, I use aided language stimulation in activities that are interesting and highly motivating for them to model creation of sentences either directly on their device or on a companion device with the same vocabulary.

You may be a “vintage” SLP if …..

* a patient’s grandmother says “I played with that toy when I was a child” (ummm… yes I am still using my Fisher Price Mini Bus, circa 1969)

* a patient’s father states “that’s the year I was born” (ummm…. yeah I’m still using the Illco Sesame Street House I bought while in grad school in 1988)

* you remember the smell and color of mimeograph handouts

It’s a smell you never forget 😂

* you “laminated” with clear contact paper

* you photocopied PCS symbols and colored them with map pencils because Boardmaker had not been invented yet (or you remember the even older Bliss symbols)

* you had to use a pay phone to find out why the Early Intervention office had “paged” you because cell phones had not been invented yet

* you had to figure out how to get to EI home visits soley based on a map and the Resource Coordinator’s handwritten directions (nope. GPS and the Internet weren’t available back in the early part of my career either)

* there was no e-mail

* there was no internet

* you had materials from Communication Skillbuilders

* there was no Super Duper

* you were proud of the artic cards you made with magazine pictures or stickers on index cards.

* there was no Teachers Pay Teachers

* IEPs and IFSPs were written by hand

* you used an external mic to record your voice on a child’s new Dynavox 2c because no 3 year old should have to have a robotic voice

* you felt super high tech with your Apple 2c and dot matrix printer that was so loud your roommate left when you printed

* you remember the huge Peabody cards in the metal box or the Fokes Sentence Builder kit

* you remember the horrid SICD test in the tackle box (ummm…. yeah many of those items were a choking hazard for infants & toddlers)

* you started a Yahoo listserve group as a way to distribute info to other therapists (in the pre-Facebook days)

{New Favorite Therapy Toy & Aided Language Stimulation} The Playskool Learnimals Color Me Hungry Hippo is my new favorite therapy toy! I had several patients squeal and giggle with delight at the sight of a jumbo version of the character they know from the popular Hungry Hungry Hippos kids game. One adorable articulation patient said “Is dat Hunwee Hunwee Hippo?” in the most astonished voice…. lol! What’s not to love about a toy that you can feed, his belly lights up to match the color of the item inserted and you learn about colors, shapes, food and counting? This new BFF also enticed one of my youngest patients to say “eat”, “mmm” & “yum” (a huge deal for this kiddo). For my AAC users and patients that I use symbol supported language stimulation as visual supports to expand verbal utterances, I made printable symbols and added him to several of my AAC apps. Besides those early concepts, also lots of opportunities for core vocabulary (today I targeted eat, hungry, in, open, more, again, full and done but already have others in mind).

I bought mine for $18.09 with free shipping through Amazon Prime (https://www.amazon.com/Playskool-Learnimals-Color-Hungry-Hippo/dp/B00C3WXKQ4). Don’t think he’s available in stores anymore but definitely worth also looking for at thrift shops and garage sales.

Important Notice: Sadly I cannot recommend this app anymore. The app developer has chosen to price it at $99.99 to force folks over to their newer Speech Blubs app. They have chosen to go with a subscription-based model, are luring folks in with the promise of a free short trial and then charging a $9.99 per month subscription fee. They are also misusing the names of several SLP blogs including my own to promote that new app. On their website they include quotes from reviews for the original app and number of users from that app and are trying to pass them off as being related to this new app. You can see my full blog post with concerns at:

It took a social media blitz to get them to remove the OMazing Kids name from the description for Speech Blubs on the App Store but I just saw they are still using my name on their website and linking back to this post. They have seriously messed with the wrong speechie…. I am very active and vocal on social media, am in almost every SLP Facebook group that they might try to lure SLPs in and am definitely not afraid to call them out every single time I see them post.

Wishes for a future app update: My wish for a future app update would be for them to add these tips and free coloring pages with the option to print them each individually as a PDF in the settings area on the app rather than having to go to a website or to e-mail to request the coloring sheets. It would also be nice to add the name of the animal on the sticker screen and the practice screen to promote early literacy skills and to aide in the adult knowing what the animal is. Most are obvious but I wasn’t able to guess that the duck was a duck by the illustration. I also wasn’t sure what the two different birds were.
