{App Review + Giveaway} Boo Articulation Helper

.

{App Review + Giveaway} Boo Articulation Helper is a fun new addition to my collection of apps geared towards early speech skills! The Boo character is cute & fun to imitate as he models consonants, vowels or CV combinations. The recent update added the option for American English so the vowels are now appropriate for my patients. I have three iOS app codes to giveaway so keep reading…. giveaway details are at the end of this post 😃.

More about the app: Boo is designed to entice spontaneous repetition of individual speech sounds and simple syllables. At the same time, he phonological awareness, by showing what actions happen in the mouth during articulation.

In the app, you put one or two sound cards in corresponding fields, building a sound or a simple consonant-vowel syllable. Then, Boo articulates the sound or syllable, clearly showing mouth and tongue movements during articulation. This may be enticing for the child to imitate and recognize how the sound syllables are made by tongue and lips. You can record and playback your own sound production for comparison. You can also make Boo go slow, repeat successively, or articulate sound noiselessly. Behind a parental lock you can disable or enable sounds as well as read instructions and tips.

Includes consonants P B T D K G S Z SH CH F V M N L W and vowels EE AH OO as well as British English AW ER and American English EH ER. The very first time you start the app you get to choose between British and American English — after that you can switch between dialects in the settings.

App Store: Boo Articulation Helper – Train Speech Sounds by Bildligt talat AB, https://appsto.re/us/h0hHib.i, $9.99 (price in USA App Store)

{App Review & Giveaway} Lively Letters app

.

{App Review & Giveaway} I’m loving the multisensory approach and customization options in the new Lively Letters app! It was exciting to hear that the company decided to keep the app priced at $19.99 so that it will be affordable for teachers, therapists & parents. I have one app code to giveaway so keep reading…. giveaway details are at the end of this post 😃.

There are three activities included in the Lively Letters App:

* The Flashing Activity introduces and teaches letter sounds and speech production. Hear the letter sound, the song, and the letter sound story in English or Spanish. Also see the associated hand and mouth cue photo and practice tracing the letter.
* The Tracking Activity develops letter sounds, phonics, and phonemic awareness skills to improve reading and spelling.
* The Matching Activity is a fun way to practice letter sounds and speech production.

All three activities allow you to select the letters you want to work with, as well as the type of letter. The types of letters are Lively Letters pictures, in lowercase and uppercase, and plain letters, in lowercase or uppercase.

The app offers several options for backgrounds: 6 fun themed backgrounds, 8 solid color backgrounds & the option to import a picture from your device. The solid backgrounds are especially of interest to those of us working with kids with special needs who need a high contrast or clutter-free background. I can also envision the option to import a picture as a custom background being helpful in tapping into kids high interest areas (see pic where I imported Thomas the Train as a background).

.

This is a well-designed app that I highly recommend! For those wondering about the $19.99 price, think about what you would spend on letter cards, letter songs, letter tracing apps, a memory match game, etc…. and you will quickly understand the value of the features included in this app and that it is well worth every penny. The app has high quality pictures, illustrations, music & voiceovers. It contains both simple and detailed instructions, the option to set up several users, data collection & option to e-mail results.

I only have three wishes for a future app update:
1. For the entire app to be in “landscape” mode. Currently the app set up screens are in “portrait” mode and then the app switches to “landscape” mode when the user is doing an activity.
2. It would also be nice to have an easy way to toggle between various background options without having to end an activity and start over going though the settings.
3. There needs to be a way to delete a user from the app.

.

App Store: Lively Letters – Phonemic Awareness & Phonics by Telian-Cas Learning Concepts Inc, https://appsto.re/us/1xmMib.i, iPad-only, requires iOS 9.0 or later, $19.99 (pricing outside of the USA will vary depending on the exchange rate).

{App Review + Giveaway} LetterSchool app (full version, worth $4.99)

image

.

{App Review & Giveaway} I have 1 iOS promo code to giveaway for the full version of the LetterSchool – learn to write letters and numbers app by Letterschool Enabling Learning B.V., https://appsto.re/us/oBn9z.i, $4.99, iOS Universal

The full version of this app had been on my wish list for quite awhile so I was thrilled to finally have the opportunity to try it out. A couple of you had recommended that it be added to my blog post about apps for SLPs. I love the large size of the letters, the voiceovers for the letter name and sound, sound word association, the progression in tracing the letters, cool animations, options for setting up three users, choices of upper and lowercase & choices of three common fonts. This app would be fun to work on early literacy skills. It could also be used in articulation therapy as a fun way to introduce a sound.

My only suggestions for improvements in a future app update are to have the words associated with each letter be a single sound rather than a blend. Also the lowercase letter g is currently associated with “giraffe”… would be better as a /g/ sound (ex: game, go, goat) and the lowercase w is currently associated with “whale”…. would be better associated with a true /w/ sound (ex: water, win).

I tested the app on an iPad Air running iOS 10.1.1 and did not have any problems with glitches or crashing but I saw a few reviews on the App Store mentioning crashes. Although the last update is shown as October 2014 there is a comment in the app description from September 2016 indicating the bug causing the crashes had been fixed.

They also have a free lite version of the app: LetterSchool Free – Learn to Write the ABC Alphabet, Letters & Numbers by Letterschool Enabling Learning B.V.
https://appsto.re/us/CkiRC.i (but be aware that it has an IAP. If you like the app it would be better and cheaper to purchase the full version rather than upgrading via the IAP in the lite app).

{App Review & Giveaway} What’s the Pic Articulation by HomeSpeechHome

image

.

{App Review & Giveaway} What’s the Pic Articulation by HomeSpeechHome (https://appsto.re/us/iZ3Aeb.i, iOS Universal, $4.99). See details below for how to enter to win a code for this SLP-designed app. I have 1 iOS app code to giveaway.

A picture is displayed with a varied number of times the player must say it. Each time the word is said, a star lights up. Once all the stars are lit, a sticker is removed from the hidden picture with a fun sound effect, and players try to guess what it is before it is completely uncovered! Hidden pictures are covered with colorful stickers (8 different types each with their own fun, reinforcing sound effect as they are removed). Spelling hints are available when a player is having trouble guessing the hidden picture. Three different animated reward screens are earned upon guessing or uncovering the hidden picture.

.

Get a great overview of the app in this video:

.

Here’s what I love about this unique new app:

* how well it responds to voice output.
* the therapist is responsible for scoring the accuracy of each production.
* includes every phoneme, blends and vocalic r in every position of words. It’s great that each blend and type of vocalic r is listed separately. {Tip: Unless you have plenty of unused space on your iPad, I would suggest just downloading the sounds as you need them. The app developer indicated that it would take up to 1 GB of space to have everything downloaded at the same time.}
* real photos for the target word & the hidden picture.
* can set up multiple users and customized with a name and picture or emoji avatar. Can use individually or in a group. The app automatically advances turns among the players. The app remembers the sound a player worked on in the last session.
* data is collected on each player and can be e-mailed.
* guessing the hidden picture before it is uncovered is a fun way to also address inferencing and part-to-whole goals.
* everything is included. No in-app purchases or ads.

Wishes for a future app update:

The app is GREAT as it is and a bargain for the price but I have given the following suggestions to the app developer that would make it even better if they plan to update it in the future:

* After downloading a sound, it would be nice to be able to further customize the list for a particular child. For example, for some patients I might want to exclude multisyllabic words or words with a much harder phoneme. Or I might want to only include challenging words for kids further along in the therapy process.

* It would also be nice to know how many words are included when you select a sound, have a countdown and to be able to set how many repetitions you want for each word (with the option to have it randomized like it currently appears to be)

* It would be nice to be able to import a pic from the camera roll in addition to the options of selecting an avatar and taking a pic. I have several patients who have a favorite character that they would be highly motivated to use as an avatar. I ended up displaying a picture on another iPad and taking a picture of it within this app.

* It would be great to have the option of customizing the hidden picture. It would be highly motivating for a child to uncover a pic of their favorite character, toy, etc.

* It would be nice to have the app rotate when you flip the iPad. Due to the configuration in my treatment room I’m almost always seated to the right of the patient. I always use my iPad in landscape orientation with the home button on the right. I do that so I am both in charge of the home button & since most SLP scoring is on that side. The app is currently upside down when my iPad is my favorite position.
