{App Review} My PlayHome: Hospital

image

.

Totally LOVE this new app from My PlayHome! So many areas to explore: reception desk, wheelchairs, elevator, gift shop, waiting area with a TV & vending machine, treatment area with oxygen masks, vital signs monitors, syringes, saline and blood bags, privacy screens and a computer with realistic typing and clicking. In the private patient rooms the curtains can be shut to darken the room. The doctor’s office has a functioning stethoscope to hear the heartbeat. The X-ray area is amazing. Love how the X-ray machine responds accurately to the part of the body being scanned and then you can “print” a copy and view it.

Love the arrows that make it clear how to navigate to other areas. Also love the intuitive way that the apps in the series link to each other and it’s especially cool that you can drive the ambulance from the hospital to the school, stores and home. The sound effects are very realistic. Unless you press the “tidy the hospital” button on the opening screen, the items & people remain where they are the next time you open the app.

Only a few wishes for a future app update to make the app even more accurate: it would be nice to be able to change the TVs to a couple of different channels, when a tray is placed in the sink in the upstairs break area it partially shows through in an odd way, the soda in the bottle from the vending machine needs to disappear as it’s being consumed, the characters need to be able to hold the phone to their ear, it would be cool to have an overhead paging system microphone at the reception desk and the doctor’s office needs a biohazard disposal can for the needles. Being a SLP, it would be super cool to see an option added to the X-ray area to do a dysphagiagram (swallow study).

See the App Trailer: http://youtu.be/v91tMkFAFPc

.

This app is a bargain for only $2.99: My PlayHome Hospital by PlayHome Software Ltd
https://appsto.re/us/FAksbb.i

I highly recommend SLPs have all the apps in this series. Lots of opportunities for language, following directions, spatial concepts, etc. plus this particular app could be used as part of a social story to help prepare a child for an upcoming medical procedure or hospital stay.

OMazing Kids Book Review: “Raybot: Every Robot Needs A Friend” by Adam F. Watkins

image

.

Check out this fun new addition to the OMazing Kids library…. Raybot: Every Robot Needs a Friend by Adam F. Watkins!

Raybot doesn’t have a best friend. Actually, he doesn’t have any friends at all. After learning that puppies make good best friends. Raybot decides to go find one…. but what does a puppy look like? Raybot has never seen one before. All he knows is that they go “bark!” And where does a robot find himself a puppy? The country? The jungle? Deep in the ocean? Somewhere in the world there must be an animal that goes “bark!”

I love the cool full-page illustrations, lots of opportunities for vocabulary, animal sounds, inferences and more! The book is also full of lots of opportunities for kids yoga: robot, gate, cross crawl hike, horse, goat, chicken, cow, pig, gyan mudra looking glasses, duck, bear, moose, goose, beaver, hippo, tree, giraffe, elephant, lion, monkey, lazy eights vines, whale, penguin, seal, shark, fish, waterfall, snake, parrot, puppy.

OMazing Kids Book Review: Why Johnny Doesn’t Flap: NT is OK! by Clay Morton & Gail Morton

Why Johnny Doesn't Flap - book review

.

Why Johnny Doesn’t Flap: NT is OK!

.
Johnny is different. He is never exactly on time, he can’t seem to stick to a routine and he often speaks in cryptic idioms. Johnny is neurotypical, but that’s OK. A picture book with a difference, Why Johnny Doesn’t Flap turns the tables on common depictions of neurological difference by drolly revealing how people who are not on the autistic spectrum are perceived by those who are. The autistic narrator’s bafflement at his neurotypical friend’s quirks shows that ‘normal’ is simply a matter of perspective.
.

What I love about this book: This book is a witty change in perspective and is a great addition to my special needs acceptance & awareness library! It can be used to help kids who are neurologically diverse to understand and appreciate each other. I love that this kids picture book is written from the perspective of a child with Autism and that the character is accepting of his neurotypical friend despite their differences. The “A Note for Parents” page has helpful tips for parents as they read the book with their child.

{Book Review} Little Bitty Friends by Elizabeth McPike, free printable + ideas for kids yoga & speech-language therapy

image

.

Check out this awesome new addition to the OMazing Kids collection of fabulous kids picture books: Little Bitty Friends by Elizabeth McPike (due to be released 2/2/16; hardcover, 32 pages, $16.99; the book description indicates that the book is for ages birth to 3 but I can definitely see myself using this book into early elementary ages).

  • I love the adorable illustrations and the rolling-off-your-tongue fun to read rhyming text.
  • The book has lots of great opportunities for language with unique verbs (march, tickle, reach, fly, peek, nibble, sway, sneeze, chatter, play, nuzzle, nap, rest & hug) and nouns (boy, girl, knee, nose, lap, caterpillar, flower, sky, bird, tent, snail, mouse, strawberry, tree, swing, cat, wagon, chipmunk, ladybug, grass, rock, turtle, rabbit, basket, blanket, puppy).
  • As an added bonus there are lots of opportunities for kids yoga activities based on the illustrations and text (cross crawl hike, ant (warrior 1), caterpillar (group happy baby), flower, stretch to sky, bird, tree, snail, tent (triangle or rooftop partners), mouse, weeping willow (crescent moon), swing (standing forward fold with arms on top of each other like swing seat), cat, chipmunk (toe-ga with brown pom poms), ladybug, turtle, bunny breaths, resting puppy savasana & big self-hug).

Here is a free printable that I made to use with this book. I have several kids that I see for speech-language therapy who respond well to getting to color or splat a small ball of playdoh on a small picture after saying a certain number of articulation target words or naming pics (Tip: When using playdoh splat mats it helps to already have small balls of playdoh pre-rolled). In my kids yoga classes, I use coloring sheets both as a visual support for kids to pick a pose to do again and as a coloring sheet to do during relaxation at the end or to take home.

Free printable symbols for Tiggly apps & styluses

image

.

My favorite therapy activity today was using the Tiggly Safari app with the shape styluses on my iPad to create lots of opportunities for language, listening, matching, sustained attention, joint attention and tons of fun! This particular patient is a preschooler with Autism and newly emerging verbal skills. I use symbols with him in a combo of PECS communication, as a visual support for choices and as aided language input. His smiles & giggles were the highlight of my day. 🙂

.

There are currently 10 Tiggly apps and three different sets of styluses. Here are some free printable symbols that I made for my patients who use PECS to be able to choose a particular Tiggly app as well as which stylus they want to use. Now that I have the images created, I can also import them into a variety of AAC apps as fringe vocabulary for a couple of my patients who have a high interest in these particular apps.

For those of you who have Boardmaker, I saved it out on the Boarmaker Share website: http://br.boardmakershare.com/Activity/1908065/PECS-symbols-for-Tiggly-Apps–Styluses

{Book Review} Nice Work, Franklin! by Suzanne Tripp Jurmain

Nice Work FRanklin

.

Nice Work, Franklin! by Suzanne Tripp Jurmain is a cool new kids picture book about Franklin Roosevelt. I especially like the messages of persevering despite setbacks & disabilities. It would be a nice addition to classroom lessons on the USA presidents, the Great Depression and/or disabilities.  It’s not necessarily a book that I could see myself using much in speech-language therapy sessions or kids yoga classes so I’ll be passing along my copy to one of the teachers at the facility where I work 🙂

.

As one of our most inspirational and determined presidents, Franklin Roosevelt overcame his disability to lead the country out of the Great Depression.

Franklin Roosevelt idolized his cousin Teddy Roosevelt. He started wearing eyeglasses like Teddy, he spoke like Teddy, and he held the same public offices as Teddy. But then one day his life changed—he got sick. He developed polio and he could no longer walk. But Franklin also had Teddy’s determination, so after physical therapy and hard work, he ran for governor of New York and won. Then a different kind of sickness, the Great Depression, spread across the country: Banks were closing, and thousands lost their jobs.

Franklin said that if you have a problem, solve it. If one solution doesn’t work, try another but above all TRY SOMETHING. So Franklin ran for president, and on Inauguration Day, he made it clear that together they would conquer this sickness. He got to work creating jobs and slowly America started getting better.

{Book Review & Free Printable} Shh! Bears Sleeping by David Martin

Shhh Bears Sleeping

.

Check out this awesome new addition to the OMazing Kids collection of fabulous kids picture books: Shh! Bears Sleeping by David Martin (due to be released Jan 05, 2016 | 32 Pages | 3-7 years).

I love the gorgeous illustrations & simple rhyming text. As an added bonus there are several opportunities for kids yoga: tree, bird, humming bee breath, flower, cross crawl hike, fish, yawning stretch, squirrel toe-ga with brown pom-poms as acorns, bunny breath, snowflake (standing star with wiggling fingers as falling snowflakes), coyote (up dog), owl, deer, wake up shake. There is also a 2-page spread of bear facts.

.

Here is a sneak peek at a few pages inside the book:
