{How to Get FREE Access to Full PDFs of Research Articles}

I was excited to see AAC research mentioned on The Informed SLP: http://www.theinformedslp.com/2016_8_ped/-aac-support-training-for-parents-peers-school-staff

These types of posts typically just lead you to a summary of the research but not the full article. I used to spend tons of time e-mailing friends who work at a university to see if they could get me a copy an article I wanted. Occasionally this worked but often it didn’t and I was often left feeling frustrated. {what good is research if it doesn’t get into the hands of those of us out in the “trenches”?}

I personally can’t afford to subscribe to a ton of different journals but want to stay up to date on best practices. I also don’t work at a university and don’t have time to go to one to get access.

This all changed when one of my virtual AAC peeps let me in on a secret. Did you know there are websites you can use to get FREE access?!

So now I use those websites to get the research articles I am wanting to read.

Here are my go-to websites: http://sci-hub.cc, http://sci-hub.io, http://sci-hub.bz. If one on the list isn’t working, go on to the next one: http://learn-one-thing-a-day.blogspot.com/2012/11/where-to-get-research-papers-for-free.html

Research comparing Autism treatment approaches

Interesting research comparing Autism treatment approaches. Helpful info in the summary at the end:

* If the child is verbal, has the ability to imitate, has limited social communication, and displays inappropriate or problematic behaviors, Pivotal Response Training may be a promising option for parent training intervention since it encompasses a wide range of target skills.

* If the child has a lack of eye contact and joint attention skills, makes little to no attempts to initiate social interactions, and limited vocabulary, Hanen’s More Than Words may be the best intervention choice since it can accommodate both nonverbal and verbal children with ASD.

* If the child is verbal with initial imitative skills, low MLUs, and significant deficits in expressive language and social initiation skills, Milieu Teaching is a viable option for parent training intervention.

* If the child is has little to no spontaneous speech but has imitative skills, Modified Incidental Teaching Sessions are appropriate choices for intervention.

It does a nice job of looking at other factors to consider (cost, time, preferences of parents and individuals with ASD, availability of training, etc.) when choosing approaches.

See screenshots of key elements in each approach in the comments on this post on my OMazing Kids page:

[Note: There are many other Autism treatment approaches (ex: DIR Floortime, TEACCH, ABA Verbal Behavior, etc…) in addition to the ones included in this research. As a SLP, I pick and choose elements based on a particular patient’s needs and what skills I am trying to teach.]
