BalloonMaker Cause & Effect App: a current fave at OMazing Kids!

A current fave at OMazing Kids… this cause & effect app is worth it’s weight in gold! I have a young patient with an extremely short attention span (typically under 5 seconds) who usually just mouths and throws toys. I created choices on the GoTalk Now AAC app and within one session he activated “iPad” several times to get to play this app. He maintained sustained joint attention to it for over 5 minutes at a time and vocalized more than I’ve ever heard in a session (pop, bubble, bi (big), ge ih (get it) & yeah). His mom was so excited she videoed a bit of it on her phone.

I was initially leery since the app hasn’t been updated since 2011. Usually not a good sign. Since it was only $.99, I decided to buy it. It works fine on my iPad running iOS 8.4 and on my iPad Mini that I just updated to iOS 9.3. Best $.99 I’ve ever spent 🙂

There is an Android version…. but since I don’t have any of those devices I can’t verify how well the app works on that platform: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.domainname.BalloonMaker. It’s only $.99 there too so worth trying.

These were the choices on the GoTalk Now AAC app on my other iPad. It’s a dedicated “talker” and my other iPad has the fun stuff like this BalloonMaker app and other therapy apps.

Of course I still use “real” bubbles & lots of real toys with kids in therapy sessions…. but the incredible results with this app in this particular session with this particular child were amazing and the giggles were priceless.

Great app for early speech sounds: Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?

This fun book app version of the classic Dr. Seuss “Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?” by Oceanhouse Media has great opportunities for repetitive simplified approximations for early speech sounds: moo, bu (buzz), paw (pop), la -or- op (klop), e (eek), doo (cock-a-doodle-doo), whoo, a (rain), i (dibble), aw (drop), oo oo (choo choo), ih (tick), aw (tock), naw (knock), um (gum), pih -or- ip (pip), boo (boom). And imitation of lip positions for some of the harder words: lip rounding for the horn blowing, lip licking for cat slurping, lip smacking for fish kiss.

Core Vocabulary – App of the Week: Baking Fun by Kujifun

I attended a fabulous “Therapeutic use of the iPad” training sponsored by the Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma on Saturday. Stefanie Barker-Olson from Little Light House & Camber Moulton from Oklahoma Assistive Technology Center inspired me to look for more ways to target Core Vocabulary while using apps in therapy. During a break, I found this fun Baking Fun app from Kujifun that had just been reduced from $1.99 -> FREE. What else does a SLP tech geek do on the weekend…. play with the app, come up with the following vocabulary to target: big, close, done, empty, full, go, help, hot, in, little, more, my, on, open, out, stir, stop, turn, your and create a “list of words to teach” in the PRC Words For Life #AAC #App. Can’t wait to use this with several kids in OMazing Kids speech therapy at the J.D. McCarty Center this week!

I was inspired by this post on the Uncommon Sense Blog to make a Core Words Vocabulary booklet to go with the app:

Making Bread – Core Vocabulary booklet to go with the Baking Fun app – 21-page PDF. I’m planning on downloading the booklet into iBooks and use it there rather than printing. I’ll have one iPad with the AAC app open & a second iPad with the the Baking Fun app & Core Vocabulary Booklet open. I’m going to model use of core vocabulary as we play with the app and then follow up with the Core Vocabulary Booklet. If you want to print it, here is a MS Word version set up to print 2 pages per letter sized sheet. Then cut the page in half and staple together: Making Bread – Core Vocabulary booklet to go with the Baking Fun app (will print 2 pages per sheet).
