“The Day the Crayons Came Home” by Drew Daywalt & Oliver Jeffers
.
This sequel is hilarious! Each two page spread contains a postcard from one of Duncan’s beloved crayons each asking for help to find their way back home. Poor crayons…. they have been through being broken, melted, eaten, sharpened and more. Will they all make it back home safely? You’ll have to read the book to find out 😉

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review this new kids picture book by Pharrell Williams! I am a pediatric speech-language pathologist and have numerous kids on my caseload who LOVE this song. It could easily be the musical mantra for kids with special needs. It’s by far the most motivating song on my iPad that will consistently get a response and get kids to activate the screen to independently turn on the song via the Touch Switch app by Goatella (https://appsto.re/us/8Ib5B.i).
.
.
What’s cool about the picture book inspired by the lyrics from this song is that it features gorgeous photos of kids acting out what those lyrics mean to them. Nope… no Minions to be found in this book. Instead the focus is on kids and they did a nice job with multicultural representation (I do wish they had included a few kids with special needs in the photos since they are not often featured in kids picture books and this would have made the book even more fabulous). The photos are embellished with fun illustrations and the words are in a large easy to read font arranged in an interesting way on each 2-page spread.
.
.
Having this song in book form caused me to really focus on the powerful lyrics. Here are some of my faves with messages of limitless possibilities & overcoming obstacles … especially powerful for kids with special needs to hear:
“I’m a hot air balloon that could go into space”
“Well, gimme all you got and don’t hold back. Well, I should probably warn you, I’ll be just fine.”
“Bring me down… can’t nothing… Bring me down… my level’s too high… Bring me down… can’t nothing… Bring me down”
.
.
An added bonus for kids yoga teachers is that many of the pages lend themselves well to kids yoga activities. Here are the opportunities for kids yoga that I spotted in the book: sun breath & stretch, sun salutations, palm tree, ocean breath, hot air balloon visualization, balloon breath, rocket ship blast off, kite, rooftop partners, clapping to beat, drumming, lotus mudra crown, raindrop pats, puddle stomping, umbrella, airplane & yoga freeze dance to the song “Happy”.

Wow! I’m very impressed with this! Get amazing resources for kids & parents in this new FREE app: Sesame Street and Autism https://appsto.re/us/MCg48.i
Also available online at: http://autism.sesamestreet.org. I didn’t see an Android version of the app yet but my guess is that it will be released soon.
I love that they have presented a well-balanced view of Autism…. both the positives & the challenges. Also love seeing several real life examples of AAC use. Excited to see AAC use out in the mainstream media 🙂
The story behind why this new Sesame Street Autism initiative is so awesome… they took the time to include Autism self-advocates in the process of developing it!
The Autistic Self Advocacy Network, ASAN, is proud to be a partner in Sesame Workshop’s “Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children” initiative. Over the past year, ASAN has worked closely with Sesame Workshop to ensure that the initiative and its materials are positive, respectful, and promote real understanding and acceptance of autistic people. The See Amazing initiative represents an important step forward in public conversations aimed at autism, one focused on celebrating all kinds of minds.”
Why is the new Sesame Street character is a girl? How did they choose the traits she would have?
“Children with autism vary in their traits significantly: some can talk, while others can’t. Many of them are sensitive to noise. Some have trouble keeping eye contact, and many of them experience the world differently, so they’ll touch different objects to explore the sensation of texture. Perhaps because of this range, autism is also extremely controversial. While some organizations, such as Autism Speaks, consider autism a syndrome that calls for research to help mitigate its effects, others, such as the Autism Self-Advocacy Network, simply view autism as an alternative way of expressing oneself….”

This fun book app version of the classic Dr. Seuss “Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?” by Oceanhouse Media has great opportunities for repetitive simplified approximations for early speech sounds: moo, bu (buzz), paw (pop), la -or- op (klop), e (eek), doo (cock-a-doodle-doo), whoo, a (rain), i (dibble), aw (drop), oo oo (choo choo), ih (tick), aw (tock), naw (knock), um (gum), pih -or- ip (pip), boo (boom). And imitation of lip positions for some of the harder words: lip rounding for the horn blowing, lip licking for cat slurping, lip smacking for fish kiss.
.
The app isn’t free but is definitely worth it with all the sound effects, ability to go directly to any page within the book and option to use in-app recording to record the child (currently $3.99, iOS Universal – works on iPad, iPhone or iTouch, https://appsto.re/us/Ic-0z.i).

Words are powerful. They can be used to heal or to hurt. To build up or to tear down. To encourage or to discourage.
Over the past few weeks I have personally experienced the negative side of this and was greatly in need of encouragement.
Look what I received in the mail yesterday. A word of encouragement & thanks from thousands of miles away. Thank you Jo Owens from Australia! You took the time to send handcrafted cards with deeply meaningful words of thanks via airmail. I know that God inspired you to reach out to me and this ministered to my heart more than you will ever know.
I challenge each of us to take the time to show kindness and to speak words of encouragement. If someone around you is struggling, take time to find out why and be a protective covering for that person. Use your words to help.
