{Book Reviews} 3 great books coming in May: Little Sleepyhead, Blue Boat & A Dark, Dark Cave

image
.
Check out these 3 fabulous new picture books being released this month from Penguin Random House:

.

image

* Little Sleepyhead board book by Elizabeth McPike [coming 5/10/16: http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/312764/little-sleepyhead-by-elizabeth-mcpike-illustrated-by-patrice-barton/9780399162404/#]. I love the rhyming text & sweet illustrations. Perfect for teaching body parts & a fun bedtime read.

.

image

* Blue Boat by Kersten Hamilton [coming 5/17/16 – hardcover: http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/316824/blue-boat-by-kersten-hamilton-illustrated-by-valeria-petrone/hardcover#; board book: http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/316824/blue-boat-by-kersten-hamilton-illustrated-by-valeria-petrone/boardbook. The board book has the same content other than the end sheets, credits and this two-page spread in the middle of the hardcover edition (see pic below)]. I love the rhyming text, lots of great descriptive language and action words and colorful illustrations. Perfect for kids who love boats and other transportation. I love using board book versions when I am using a book during modeling on an AAC device. The slightly smaller format and thick easy to turn pages are a good fit for that.

.

image

* A Dark, Dark Cave by Eric Hoffman [coming 5/24/16: http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/314991/a-dark-dark-cave-by-eric-hoffman-illustrated-by-corey-r-tabor/#]. I love the artsy illustrations, rhyming text, great repeated line “dark, dark cave”, lots of descriptive language and spatial concepts and inspiration for imaginative play. As a bonus, the book has the following opportunities for kids yoga: crescent moon, blowing wind, bat, dog, cat, lizard on a rock, roaring, rooftop partners (for the blanket cave), sun stretch & breath, horse, bird.

{Product Review} Q’s Race to the Top Bundle: Boardgame, On the Go Pack, Read-Along Storybook & CD, Coloring & Activity Book, and Q-Time Buddy weighted plush doll

OMazing Kids Review - Q's Race to the Top Bundle

.

I am SUPER excited to have these amazing products to use in  OMazing Kids speech-language therapy and kids yoga classes! EQtainment generously sent me the Q Toys Bundle to try out and review. They have been a HUGE hit with my patients. The bundle includes the Q’s Race to the Top Boardgame, Q’s Race on the Go Pack, Q’s Wild Ride Read-Along Storybook & CD, Q’s Coloring & Activity Book, and the Q-Time Buddy weighted plush doll. [price: $59.99 (an $8.00 savings over purchasing all of the items separately): http://shop.eqtainment.com/products/q-toys-bundle].

Here’s what I LOVE about these amazing products:

  • The Q’s Race to the Top Boardgame has an oversized dice and game pieces (both nice for younger kids or for those with fine motor challenges) and a sturdy colorful game board that is easy to understand and short enough to get to the end within a typical speech-language therapy session.
  • The cards in the game have a wide degree of difficulty and social skills targeted. The game was designed and tested with kids ages 3-12 years old. Younger kids or those with special needs may need the therapist or parent to preselect cards before the start of the game to best suit their kids needs. The adult could also simplify the wording as they read the cards. The “Do” cards contain a mix of physical actions ranging from simple to pretty challenging. Some also incorporate emotions and facial expressions. Again I would suggest preselecting the ones that will best suit your kids physical abilities and developmental level. The adult may need to simplify these activities or modify them for kids with special needs. For kids that need a visual support to help them understand what the motion would look like, I will incorporate video modeling and pictures. The selfie camera mode on my iPad will also come in handy.
  • The Q’s Wild Ride book included with the game is fun to read to introduce kids to the loveable yet quirky character Q before playing the game. (Q is “a dusky leaf monkey”…. thanks for including the specifics! The first question my patient with ASD asked was “what kind of monkey is that?”). The Read-Along Storybook & CD is exactly the same story but  in a larger book format and includes a CD with two tracks (with and without page turn signals). The narration and sound effects are very well done in the CD and the illustrations in the book depict emotions well through exaggerated facial expressions and body language. I took a couple of pics of interior pages since none seemed to be available online and this will help folks make purchasing decisions.
  • The Q’s Race to the Top – On the Go Pack are the same cards as contained in the board game but are sized a little smaller and are in a durable metal tin.
  • The Q-Time Buddy weighted plush doll is super soft, is wearing a cute green hoodie and is the perfect weight and size to be used in belly breathing. I had several patients who immediately relaxed, closed their eyes and began belly breathing when laying on their back with the Q-Time Buddy on their belly. The instructions are printed on the back of the box. My only suggestion for improvement would be to include a separate card with the belly breathing instructions since most folks usually don’t keep the box when they get a stuffed animal. I am including some pics below that I found on the Kohl’s website so I will be able to share the instructions with parents later.
  • The Q’s Coloring & Activity Book is filled with great tie-ins to the book & game. It also includes several pages that are unique to just the coloring book and also includes fun activity pages (dot-to-dot, finish the picture, maze, find the same, drawing emotions on faces, etc…). I scanned a couple of interior pages since none seemed to be available online and this will help folks make purchasing decisions.
  • All of the products are very well designed and of high quality materials. Is is very obvious that a lot of thought went into the design of these products. I love that they offer them as individual items so parents and therapists can pick and choose the ones to best fit their needs or get the entire set as bundle.

These are definitely destined to become “faves” in OMazing Kids speech-language therapy and my kids yoga classes!

{OMazing Kids Book Review} “Hoot and Peep” by Lita Judge

image

.

I’m a huge fan of Lita’s books so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review this new one. Here’s what I LOVE about it:
.

  • Gorgeous rich illustrations in deep calming colors.
  • Great message of learning to see things from another point of view and experiencing the joy of new adventures. While this book depicts a sibling relationship it could be easily expanded to topics on friendships.
  • Large easy to read text on each 2-page spread. I love that some pages have minimal text so the focus can be on the details in the illustrations.
  • Peep’s sounds are fun for kids to attempt to imitate (schweep, schweeepty peep, schweepity peep oooo ding dong boing, dingity dong, slippity slap, etc…).
  • The facial expressions and body language of Hoot and Peep lend themselves well to use in speech therapy sessions targeting social skills, feelings & inferencing.
  • As an added bonus, there are a few opportunities for kids yoga activities based on the illustrations and text: owl, rooftop partners, cross crawl hike, crescent moon, bell mindfulness activity, bird, mouse, gargoyle (dragon breath), up dog, bridge.
    .

About the book: In the night skies above Paris, an adorable young owl teaches her older brother about the power of imagination—and the unconditional love between siblings. Hoot the owl is very excited for his little sister, Peep, to join him on the cathedral rooftops. She’s finally old enough to learn all his big brother owly wisdom: First, owls say hooo. Second, they always say hooo. Lastly, they ONLY say hooo! But why would Peep say hooo when she could say schweeepty peep or dingity dong? Why would she speak when she could sing? As she explores the breathtaking Parisian cityscape, Peep discovers so many inspiring sights and sounds—the ring of cathedral bells, the slap of waves on stone—that she can’t help but be swept up in the magic of it all. Hoot doesn’t understand Peep’s awe, until he takes a pause to listen . . . and realizes that you’re never too old to learn a little something new.

Check out this fun new addition to the OMazing Kids library…. Raybot: Every Robot Needs a Friend by Adam F. Watkins!

Raybot doesn’t have a best friend. Actually, he doesn’t have any friends at all. After learning that puppies make good best friends. Raybot decides to go find one…. but what does a puppy look like? Raybot has never seen one before. All he knows is that they go “bark!” And where does a robot find himself a puppy? The country? The jungle? Deep in the ocean? Somewhere in the world there must be an animal that goes “bark!”

OMazing Kids Book Review: Why Johnny Doesn’t Flap: NT is OK! by Clay Morton & Gail Morton

Why Johnny Doesn't Flap - book review

.

Why Johnny Doesn’t Flap: NT is OK!

.
Johnny is different. He is never exactly on time, he can’t seem to stick to a routine and he often speaks in cryptic idioms. Johnny is neurotypical, but that’s OK. A picture book with a difference, Why Johnny Doesn’t Flap turns the tables on common depictions of neurological difference by drolly revealing how people who are not on the autistic spectrum are perceived by those who are. The autistic narrator’s bafflement at his neurotypical friend’s quirks shows that ‘normal’ is simply a matter of perspective.
.

What I love about this book: This book is a witty change in perspective and is a great addition to my special needs acceptance & awareness library! It can be used to help kids who are neurologically diverse to understand and appreciate each other. I love that this kids picture book is written from the perspective of a child with Autism and that the character is accepting of his neurotypical friend despite their differences. The “A Note for Parents” page has helpful tips for parents as they read the book with their child.

{Book Review} Little Bitty Friends by Elizabeth McPike, free printable + ideas for kids yoga & speech-language therapy

image

.

Check out this awesome new addition to the OMazing Kids collection of fabulous kids picture books: Little Bitty Friends by Elizabeth McPike (due to be released 2/2/16; hardcover, 32 pages, $16.99; the book description indicates that the book is for ages birth to 3 but I can definitely see myself using this book into early elementary ages).

  • I love the adorable illustrations and the rolling-off-your-tongue fun to read rhyming text.
  • The book has lots of great opportunities for language with unique verbs (march, tickle, reach, fly, peek, nibble, sway, sneeze, chatter, play, nuzzle, nap, rest & hug) and nouns (boy, girl, knee, nose, lap, caterpillar, flower, sky, bird, tent, snail, mouse, strawberry, tree, swing, cat, wagon, chipmunk, ladybug, grass, rock, turtle, rabbit, basket, blanket, puppy).
  • As an added bonus there are lots of opportunities for kids yoga activities based on the illustrations and text (cross crawl hike, ant (warrior 1), caterpillar (group happy baby), flower, stretch to sky, bird, tree, snail, tent (triangle or rooftop partners), mouse, weeping willow (crescent moon), swing (standing forward fold with arms on top of each other like swing seat), cat, chipmunk (toe-ga with brown pom poms), ladybug, turtle, bunny breaths, resting puppy savasana & big self-hug).

Here is a free printable that I made to use with this book. I have several kids that I see for speech-language therapy who respond well to getting to color or splat a small ball of playdoh on a small picture after saying a certain number of articulation target words or naming pics (Tip: When using playdoh splat mats it helps to already have small balls of playdoh pre-rolled). In my kids yoga classes, I use coloring sheets both as a visual support for kids to pick a pose to do again and as a coloring sheet to do during relaxation at the end or to take home.

.

Check out this awesome new addition to the OMazing Kids collection of fabulous kids picture books: “The Hueys in What’s the Opposite?” by Oliver Jeffers! I’m always looking for fun ways to work on opposites with kids in my speech language therapy sessions. I love the quirky illustrations and humor in this author’s books…. too hilarious. This book has 13 opposite word pairs each presented on a 2-page spread with large easy to read font.

A Color of His Own & The Mixed Up Chameleon: Lesson Plan Ideas & Free Printables

image

.

Kohl’s is a fabulous place to get large hardcover books & a matching plush animal for just $5.00 each! Plus a portion of the sales goes to a good cause. Their latest Kohl’s Cares campaign includes some books & plush from Leo Lionni. I already had a small board book version of “A Color of His Own” but couldn’t resist getting this nice large hardcover version & the adorable plush chameleon at my local Kohl’s. Also available online:

http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2284589/kohls-cares-a-color-of-his-own-book.jsp?color=Multi/None

http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2284745/kohls-cares-chameleon-plush.jsp?pfm=rrrecs-pdp-gtab1

.

The book has the following opportunities for kids yoga: bird, fish, elephant, pig, chameleon (plank), heather (flower), tiger, leaf, grass, mushroom (child’s pose). The book is also great for vocabulary & colors and has a fabulous message of friendship.

.

The cool thing is that I can use the same plush with “The Mixed Up Chameleon” by Eric Carle (another great Kohl’s Cares purchase back in 2011). It has the following opportunities for kids yoga: chameleon (plank), tree, flower, sun stretch & breath, polar bear, flamingo, fox, fish, deer, giraffe, turtle, elephant, seal, rainbow. Love the message about being yourself.

.

I use plush animals as both a story prop & as a kids yoga prop for breathing (placed on their belly) (see this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSShnzaz-8A)

Here is a printable that I made back in 2011 and just updated:

.

There are also some great free printable story props for both of these books out on the Kizclub.com website: http://www.kizclub.com/stories.htm. The key is to download the PDFs you want to your computer since that website frequently disappears for several months (guessing while it is being updated). I always get the color & black-white versions of the printables.

Here are two ideas for guided relaxation to go with this theme:

I love this idea for making a clear chameleon that you can then place on a variety of surfaces: http://thatbaldchick.com/a-color-of-his-own-unit-study/

Pinterest is full of tons of cute craft ideas for both books 🙂

2 Amazing “Must Have” Books for Teaching Kids Self-Regulation Skills

image

.

I absolutely LOVE both of these books! Great for teaching kids self-regulation skills. I love the illustrations, kid-friendly language and analogies used to make the concepts easy to understand and to implement. The concepts are therapeutically sound. I highly recommend both books as “must haves” in the library of anyone working with kids with special needs.

I bought my copies on Amazon. Check out the reviews for yourself…. 100% 5-star rave reviews:
