I love using all of Karma Wilson’s books in OMazing Kids speech therapy but I’m especially a fan of the Bear series. So much so that I chose this new book as the prize in the giveaway to celebrate passing the 12,000 likes milestone on the OMazing Kids Facebook page:

Love it and made these free printable opposite cards to go with the book. It includes all the characters & opposites from the book plus several additional opposite word pairs and phrase building cards to place the adjective + noun on.

Review & Giveaway: Holiday Yoga lesson plans from Radiant Child Yoga

My thoughts about the lesson plans: They are very well thought out, detailed & creative. After reading through all the lesson plans, I think the one for Groundhog Day is my fave! I love that the lesson plans are well rounded, are deeply rooted in the concept of children being “big souls in small bodies” and include breathing, affirmations & relaxation in addition to the postures/poses. I also love that they include a coloring page for each holiday (see a small sample of the Whistling Groundhog below). Good intro information and great suggestions for props, games, music & books. You really do need to have the supplemental materials. I happen to have them from attending a Radiant Child Yoga (RCY) Level 1 & 2 Teacher Training. The only info I did not have was the Heart Lock from the Level 3 training but enough detail was provided in the PDF along with details I found online that I would feel comfortable doing it. Because of my own personal beliefs, I never do anything related to witches, Harry Potter or Halloween. It will be easy to modify the Valentine’s Day lesson plan to leave out the Wicked Witch and I just won’t use the Halloween plan. Although the price per lesson plan comes out to $3.12, there is not an option to buy individual lesson plans. Considering offering individual lesson plans for purchase would be a great option that would allow kids yoga teachers to buy just the ones that fit their needs. It’s cool though that they offer a free sample of a full lesson plan so you can get a feel for what they are like to make an informed purchasing decision (see link below).

The new “Sport Yoga” DVD by Namaste Kid is a great combo of “sports themed” yoga with their signature distraction-free background & kid-friendly format!

The DVD is organized into 11 chapters.
Each chapter is a complete 3-5 minute yoga routine, identified by a colorful icon.
You can mix-and-match chapters to create your own unique yoga experience.
This DVD can also be played from beginning to end as a full 42-minute yoga routine.
I LOVE the sports theme, creativity, short length of each chapter, distraction-free background, kid-friendly menu, parent info section & that it includes affirmations (I am fun! I am playful!).
Love that this DVD also has “Cool Down” & “Yoga Rest” segments.
If you are a kids yoga teacher, this DVD will give you some new creative ideas for yoga poses (ex: scoop up your legs to add sand onto the sand castle in flower pose, cross-crawl hike from Brain Gym as a soccer ball bounce, a modified dancer pose as a “slam dunk” in basketball, etc….). Kids yoga teacher trainings very rarely come to Oklahoma so I am always excited to find other ways to get new ideas.

More about the unique “distraction-free” background: While the DVD was designed for young kids (3 to 8 years old), it also would be appropriate for older kids that need a simplified format with no distractions. I have found that this format works well with young kids short attention spans and also works well with kids who have ADHD, Autism, etc…..

Free Printable Choice Cards: I made these by taking screen shots off the DVD of the icon for each chapter. Many of the kids I work with have very limited verbal skills so I needed a way for them to be able to make a choice of what yoga adventure we should do. One of our TV’s is wall mounted so the kids can’t just point to the menu on the TV plus many of our kids can’t make a choice out of a field of 11…… but can out of a field of 2 or 3 choices. I cut my cards apart and laminated them so I can offer 2 choices at a time….. but you could also leave all choices on 1 sheet if the kids you work with can handle that many choices. Moosely Marvelous – OMazing Kids Lesson Plan, Printables, Music & More….

My favorite animal is the Moose….. I literally have hundreds of moose items (plush, books, games, socks, T’s, PJ’s, art, figurines, dishes, quilts, music ….. the list goes on & on). The Moose “high interest/passion” started when I was a kid watching Bullwinkle.

My favorite moose book to use in kids yoga is “Agate: What Good Is A Moose?” by Joy Morgan Dey

Agate the Moose suffers from low self-esteem, always comparing himself to his sparkling friends, named for birthstones. In the end, they help Agate to see that he, too, is a beautiful gem, a secret jewel. I love, love, LOVE this book! It has wonderful illustrations, descriptive vocabulary, is full of animals that fit with yoga poses/activities, shows the power of kind words & friends, etc…

Here are the opportunities for yoga poses in the book: alligator, elephant, penguin (mountain – then waddle), giraffe, lion, monkey (chest taps), bear (bear crawl, waltzing to 1-2-3 beat, sleeping bear – child’s pose), porcupine (padma/lotus mudra – http://www.yogacheryl.com/images/m_padma_mudra.jpg), hippo (happy baby & rock-n-roll), racoon (gyan mudra at eyes – like the mask on a racoon – http://im.rediff.com/getahead/2009/may/29slide5-yoga.jpg), eagle, and bat (lay on back, legs up and crossed, arms crossed).

Depending on the class size & specific kids in the class, I either do coloring for relaxation and/or do belly breathing with small river rocks or polished stones. I found polished agate gemstone rocks at the Museum of Natural History gift shop and have also gotten some in gift shops in mountain towns on vacation.

I have lots of “moose music” and develop my playlist based on the sensory needs of the kids in the class. See Soundcloud playlist below.

I tie in affirmation mantras based on the meanings for the birthstones (see free printable below) & include a discussion about the beauty inside each of us and the power of positive words & friends.

New: More Precious than Jewels affirmation coloring activity

I made this to use as an affirmation coloring activity for Camp ClapHans. After doing yoga along with the book, each child drew or wrote things that they were good at or liked about themselves in the middle of each gem. For kids that are not able to do that, this activity could be adapted by having small pictures or symbols that the child could choose from and glue onto each gem.

More about the unique “distraction-free” background: While the DVD was designed for young kids (2.5 to 7 years old), it also would be appropriate for older kids that need a simplified format with no distractions. I have found that this format works well with young kids short attention spans and also works well with kids who have ADHD, Autism, etc…..

Free Printable Choice Cards: I made these by taking screen shots off the DVD of the icon for each chapter. Many of the kids I work with have very limited verbal skills so I needed a way for them to be able to make a choice of what yoga adventure we should do. One of our TV’s is wall mounted so the kids can’t just point to the menu on the TV plus many of our kids can’t make a choice out of a field of 9…. but can out of a field of 2 or 3 choices. I cut my cards apart and laminated them so I can offer 2 choices at a time….. but you could also leave all 9 choices on 1 sheet if the kids you work with can handle that many choices.
