OMazing Kids Yoga at the JD McCarty Center in Spry Living Magazine

Wow! Imagine my surprise to be reading the daily Google Alert for “kids yoga” and see my name. Totally humbled that they would publish this. The picture is of two of our inpatients, Maria Bratton a fellow SLP who helps lead our therapeutic yoga group & me:

Here is the link to the article in Spry Living online: http://www.spryliving.com/articles/vip-sharing-yoga-benefits-with-kids/

(PS. While they did get a couple of the facts a little off, including my age, it is true that I don’t do much yoga personally….. mainly the breathing & some gently poses. It’s what works for me & my busy schedule 🙂 )

Thanks to everyone who participated in Week 2! Here is a collage of all the pics….. I had fun using my new favorite online tool, PicMonkey, to make it!

Congratulations to the Week 2 winner Joanna O’Neal who submitted the large pic in the collage and won the -“The Happiness Tree: Celebrating the Gifts of Trees We Treasure” by Andrea Alban Gosline.  🙂

Playful Planet originated the campaign and is joined by OMazing Kids, Radiant Child Yoga and Child Light Yoga as sponsors of this 4-week campaign on Facebook.Families are being asked to take a picture of their kids doing the tree pose during this summer vacation, whether traveling to exotic lands or hanging out at home. Each week, fans will vote on for their favorite image deciding the winner of a coveted prize from one of the sponsors.  The campaign runs through August 12, 2012.

Need more info about how to post pics & the voting process? Check out the pic with details I posted on my FB page:

OMazing Kids will be providing a winner with a copy of one of my all-time favorite books about trees: “The Happiness Tree: Celebrating the Gifts of Trees We Treasure” by Andrea Alban Gosline. From seed of hope to forest of happiness, this ode to trees invites readers to discover life’s true gifts—peace, courage, gratitude, compassion, love, tolerance … Ten trees celebrate the developmental assets that children need in order to thrive as happy, productive human beings. The lush paintings and lyrical tree bios are accompanied by an index of state trees and a pledge to care for and sit beside our precious forest friends. Love that the book itself is eco-friendly by being printed on 50% post-consumer waste content paper.

222 Books for Kids Yoga – a Resource List from OMazing Kids Yoga (updated 7-7-12)

I just updated the resource list to add new books I have purchased since the original list was posted on 4/6/12 – (https://omazingkidsllc.com/2012/04/06/books-for-kids-yoga-a-resource-list-from-omazing-kids-yoga/). This is now a list of 222 kids picture books that would work well in a kids yoga class and includes the book title, author & themes .

Excel document (you can sort, search & print – must have MS Excel to open): Books for Kids Yoga Resource List (from OMazing Kids Yoga) – updated 7-7-12 (Excel Version).

PDF version (you won’t be able to sort but will be able to search and print – included this for folks who don’t have Excel): Books for Kids Yoga Resource List (from OMazing Kids Yoga) – updated 7-7-12 (PDF Version).   Need help with “searching” for specific words in a PDF? Check this out:http://www.window.state.tx.us/specialrpt/search.html .

It does not include kids books specifically designed for yoga or mindfulness because the list was created to be a resource for folks like parents, teachers, childcare providers, therapists, etc….   I have reviewed several great kids books specifically designed for yoga &/or mindfulness, love them all and plan on making a separate list of those soon. In the meantime, you can find books I have reviewed by searching my blog: https://omazingkidsllc.com/category/books/.

“OMazing Kids StoryStretchers: Creating a Yoga Storytime for Kids” at the Oklahoma Childcare Association Spring Conference

I had an OMazing time sharing info about combining yoga & storytime with a great group of 35 childcare providers at the annual Oklahoma Childcare Association Spring Conference today!

Here is a copy of my PowerPoint slides (30 page PDF). You will be able to click on the web links on each slide to go directly to each resource 🙂

Please head over and “like” the OMazing Kids Facebook page for more great info and ideas – http://www.facebook.com/OMazingKidsYoga

A huge “Thanks!” to the 11 companies that donated a total of over $800 worth of kids yoga products…… it was great to have enough stuff for every participant to get something to support them using yoga with the kids in their childcare settings!

And thanks to Budget Floor Store (http://www.floorstoresok.com/) in Oklahoma City for the carpet squares they donated last year! I have used them several times & they came in handy today for the participants to get some practice doing kids yoga poses.

Thanks to Greg Gaston, Director of Marketing at JDMC, who spent his Saturday at the JD McCarty Center booth at the conference. I was SO excited that our booth was in a prime location….. at the main entrance right across from the keynote speaker’s booth 🙂  Yippee for the opportunity to spread the word about the great services we offer at JDMC!

Pete’s A Pizza Party – An OMazing Kids Yoga lesson plan based on the story “Pete’s A Pizza” by William Steig

Time for a Pete’s A Pizza Party!

To celebrate having 400 kids yoga fans in one place sharing OMazing ideas, I’m sharing “Pete’s A Pizza Party – a free OMazing Kids Yoga lesson plan based on the story “Pete’s A Pizza” by William Steig” (including supplies, pose ideas, playlist with links to songs, symbols for the book, a printable pizza craft, affirmations and other fun ideas!).

Click on either of the screenshots to download the PDF. Within the PDF you will be able to click on links to the fun stuff!

Feel free to share any other pizza-themed ideas that you have to add to the fun 🙂

(Special thanks to Barbara Gini at BodyLogique for inspiring me to “use my noodle” to try out pizza-themed yoga!)

Update 9/26/13: Did you know that October is National Pizza Month in the USA?

Pete's a Pizza - updated post 2013

Update 8/8/12: Here is a larger version of a pizza and toppings printable I made to use in larger groups of kids as an alternative to each child assembling the pizza printable I included in my original post….. that would still be fun to do but I realized in a group of 14 kids that could take too much time. I bought a pizza pan at Dollar Tree, cut a circle out of a paper bag to fit the pan to be the “dough” & cut it into halves so I could laminate it, cut a smaller circle out of red construction paper to be the “sauce”, laminated the sauce & all the toppings, used a fine-tip permanent marker to write pose options for that ingredient on the back & used clear velcro to attach the sauce and toppings to the dough. I attached the pic of the pizza oven & the timer to the back of the pan (as a place to store them). The kids LOVED being pizzas this week in OMazing Kids Inclusive Yoga at JDMC! They did a great job keeping their table pose steady as I placed the assembled pizza on each child. BTW…. this was a fun way to practice waiting turns & maintaining a pose for a few seconds 🙂

Here is the printable I made: Pizza and Toppings Printable (PDF). I also made a coloring sheet to send home with the kids: Make a Pizza coloring sheet.

Update 9/26/12: Look at the cool Melissa & Doug Felt Pizza Set I got to go with my Pete’s a Pizza theme! Couldn’t pass it up at 40% off at Michael’s last week 🙂

Pizza at Sally’s by Monica Wellington is another fun option for doing pizza-themed kids yoga! In addition to the yoga pose options included in the lesson plan above, this book also has the following opportunities for kids yoga: planting seeds in the community vegetable garden (see Seeds & Gardens post for ideas), Sally’s cat, sun, harvesting wheat, milling flour, cow, making cheese. I love the vivid colors in this book, the combination of real photos with illustrations, how it shows where food really comes from (the process of growing & harvesting), Sally as the pizzeria owner (the depiction of a woman as a successful small business owner), etc.
