Yoga Therapy book

Yoga Therapy for Every Special Child: Meeting Needs in a Natural Setting by Nancy Williams. Yoga therapy can be a hugely rewarding approach for children with a wide range of special needs. This accessible guide contains simple yoga techniques that can be used with children of all abilities. The author provides gentle yoga postures and exercises that can help to promote relaxation, flexibility, strength, coordination and body-awareness. Each posture is accompanied by a line drawing, and the author offers advice on how each posture appropriately supports the individual child’s needs and abilities. Practical tips for incorporating creative fun and games into yoga sessions are included, and the author outlines the specific benefits of yoga for a wide range of conditions, including Attention Deficit Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, social communication difficulties, Down Syndrome, and scoliosis. The book concludes with child and parent reports of how yoga therapy has changed their life. This wonderful resource is ideal for parents, therapists and instructors who want to use simple yoga exercises with children with special needs.

I frequently receive requests for info about doing therapeutic yoga with kids with special needs. This book is on my short list of “must have” resources! It is an easy read, is affordable and has great info relating yoga to other therapeutic areas (body awareness, motor planning, communication, following directions, behavioral regulation, social skills, sensory integration), ideas for creating a good yoga environment, description of poses with benefits and modifications for specific special needs. The black and white line illustrations were done by Nancy’s sister and are lovely!

  1. This giveaway is now closed. Here are the 3 winning entries:

    1st place entry:
Name: Brian Yoder in Portland, OR
How winning this product would be helpful…: I’m a Paraeducator in a Middle School Special Needs classroom. Our room is responsible for caring for students with a broad range of needs including autism, cerebral palsy, downs syndrome, congenital malformation, and learning disorders of varying types. We try our best everyday to give our kids the best care and education we can, and Yoga has just recently (literally yesterday!) been integrated into our daily routine. We know we can make Yoga fun and positive for all of our kids, but we need a resource to reference to maximize the very little time we have to practice. Physical activity makes a big difference in our kiddos’ days, and without PE in our schedule, Yoga gives us a chance to stay physically active, and socially connected outside of academics.

    2nd place entry:
Name: Susan Singer in Turnersville, NJ
How winning this product would be helpful…: Last year I had the privilege to earn a “curriculum improvement” grant to begin a yoga program with my preschool children with disabilities. I am a speech therapist. I started in just one classroom with a teacher who was fully on board (the other PSD teachers, not so much!). It was successful beyond my expectations. So much so, that I went on to take a course in teaching yoga to children, and while it was a great class, it was not geared towards a special population. My colleagues are now asking for me to show them how to begin a program in their classes (the same people who had little interest initially!) So winning this program has the potential to reach well over 100 students with special needs. Also, you had me at the “must have” comment!!
    Namaste, Sue

    3rd place entry
Name: Jennie Choi in Richmond, VA
How winning this product would be helpful…: Oh my goodness! This giveaway is right up my alley! I am venturing into starting my own business helping children with special needs, and their families, by incorporating yoga into home-based therapeutic interventions. I can’t think of a more beneficial resource to use, and to share with my clients and their families. I am keeping my *fingers crossed* that this will soon be mine!!! 🙂

Thanks to everyone who participated! Be watching for another review/giveaway soon on OMazing Kids 🙂

    • We have two additional winners. Each will receive a copy of the book. Nancy generously offered to send me two copies to use as I wanted. Rather than them gather dust in a “lending library” I’d rather get them out to folks immediately who will use them. So I chose the following additional winners:

Alicia LaGrassa in West Lawn, PA

In summer, I work with students in a day camp setting at an alternative education school. These students deal with a variety of issues including anger and emotional issues, family issues, autism, and ADHD. I often struggle with planning lessons for these students since they each come with their own struggles and they’re a wide range of ages (5-15!). This book looks invaluable for those of us teaching kids yoga that don’t have a background in Special Education or therapy. Information about how the poses support the individuals is incredibly helpful for those of us who may not know all the “ins and outs” of the childrens’ needs. I sometimes have difficulty thinking about what to say during relaxation/meditation portion so the CD of guided meditations could be helpful on those days where it am struggling to communicate. It would also allow me to move around the room to offer massage or to assist those who are struggling to relax. Lastly, the Practicing Peace lesson could help those students I work with who are struggling with emotional issues and/or family issues. While I have these particular students in mind, the resources could be beneficial for all my students in all settings. There are often students in the library or preschool classes who may need some additional support.

      Margaret Ricciardone in Waldwick, NJ

I teach yoga to preschool/kindergarten age children and I’m considering expanding my practice for older children and children with special needs. The book and CD sound amazing.

  2. These items look so wonderful! It often seems that activities like this are a favorite of all my young yogis, especially ages 5 and up. My speech therapy clients and yoga kiddos (with and without special needs) would benefit directly from this. Thanks, as always, OMazing Kids, for reviewing, recommending, and sharing such awesome resources!
