Mary Flynn is a Registered Yoga Teacher as well as a Special Education Teacher with over 30 years of experience teaching children of various ages, levels and degrees of developmental challenges, including autism. She teaches students with special needs at the elementary, middle school and high school levels, as well as the college level (Life Skills Program) and adult programs (Easter Seals of NJ and ARC of NJ). See more about her at: http://www.peacefulpathwaysyoga.com/about-us.html

What I LOVE about this DVD:

  • Easy to use menu & navigation will lend itself to more independent use by older kids & teens with special needs.
  • Older students with special needs being in the class on the DVD. There are lots of kids yoga DVD’s but not much geared towards older kids, teens or adults with special needs.
  • Lots of great info about the benefits for each activity or pose.
  • Detailed narration about proper form/alignment at a moderate pace. While the level of narration may be too much for very young children, it is excellent info for the teacher, parent or caregiver who will be helping the child, teen or adult with special needs learn yoga.
  • Love the inclusion of centering, call/response chanting, breathwork & guided relaxation in addition to a variety of poses.
  • Lots of great detailed info about a variety of breathwork activities! These not only are great for yoga but can also be used in my work as a Speech-Language Pathologist to help improve breath support for speech.
  • There are no props, statues or pictures with religious connotations. This is helpful for use in wide variety of settings.

A few screenshots from the DVD:

Other thoughts: While the DVD says “Suitable for All Ages”, based on my experience it would be most appropriate for older kids, teens & adults with special needs since younger kids tend to do best with a playful or storytime yoga approach.  Instructions may need to be simplified to suit the individual’s cognitive & processing needs. Teachers, parents or caregivers need to be aware of any medical conditions that would be contraindications for particular types of poses or activities. I am especially cautious about any poses that could hyperextend the neck especially for kids with Down Syndrome due to the risk of them having Atlantoaxial Instability. Inversions are a group of poses I am cautious with. Info about contraindications for inversions: http://ezinearticles.com/?Yoga—Contraindications-For-Inversions&id=2104119.

  3. Entries via the Facebook tab:

    • I have a daughter with DS who would be able to make great use of this video. I practice yoga and would love something that she and i can do together, as I know full we’ll the benefits she ( and I!) can receive by practicing together….and I don’t just mean for the health of our bodies, it would be nice to spend this time together every day. I also work in a school for kids with developmental disabilities, I would love to be able to put together a yoga program for the kids and young adults as well!

    • I have had a lifelong dream to create a studio where all children and their families could come, learn and play together. I have been an OT for 13 years and have recently became passionate about yoga for all children. I hold classes myself for parent and tots, a girl’s empowerment class and a boy’s class that use creative expression, drumming, music and yoga to co create with the children. My studio has only been open for a few short months but already I know this is my life’s purpose. Children of all abilities are connecting, supporting each other and are expressing their ideas. I am also working with several school boards in our area to provide consultation in classrooms and workshops for teachers and parents about how yoga and calming strategies can be used at home and in the schools. I would use the Yoga for Children DVDs within educational training programs and directly with parents and children within my classes at To the Stars Occupational Therapy and Alternative Healing. If I was to win this set, I promise to represent your ideas within a variety of settings to share the incredible value yoga can have for all children.

    • I am currently volunteering with my local Child Development Centre helping to get them started with their very own Kids yoga program that they will be offering free of charge to kids and their parents. We are holding weekly classes and providing handouts to the parents educating them about the benefits of yoga for kids with developmental challenges. So far we have held one class and the response was nothing short of amazing by both the kids and the parents. Totally fills my cup to see the kids and parents having fun together and reaping the benefits of yoga. I would just love this DVD and feel that it would be a great tool for me as I don’t have alot of experience working with kids with developmental challenges. I would love to have the more specific info that this DVD would provide.Thank you Angela for all that you do! I have recommended your Blog and Page to everyone I know that works with kids. I am also referring to your site daily for info and inspiration. I want you to know that the countless hours you spend are greatly appreciated and helping kids all over!! Namaste

    • I teach at a private school for children who are mostly on the autism spectrum. We have a big screen and dvd player in our yoga room that would blend well in using the dvd during our classes. These kids are visual learners and range in age from 6-14. This would be an excellent resource for our school kids and well used. We have 65 children at the school.

    • I am a new certified kids yoga teacher, having practice yoga myself for 15 years, and would like, from the start, to include a diversity of children in my teaching. I am working with a local community center, local pubic schools my church to gauge needs and desires for a kids programs. I would like love to have this resource on hand to be inclusive and knowledgeable about varying populations of children. I truly believe in the power of yoga to help all kinds of children grow in physical strength and mental and emotional fortitude. And I believe that yoga is an amazing, non-compeitive way to build community and just have fun!

    • I’m a kids yoga teacher and teaching kids is one of the most rewarding thing I did in my life! Every child is special to me and they are so creative that sometimes they teach me more than I do!! My heart is full of beautiful moments spent with them and everyday is a new one and I can’t wait to go to work and guide them to this beautiful path of yoga… Last year i did a training to work with kids dealing with special needs and i set in place a program for schools and although it’s something very new here in Quebec, I had a great feedback from teachers. I wish i could work with more schools and keep developing cause I know how much yoga can make a difference in these kids life!!I would love to do more trainings but sometimes financially I have to make different choices…That book could be so helpful for me. Thank you so much.

    • In my role as School Social Worker, I will steeeerrtetch ( that’s “yogini” for jump!) at the chance to implement this material in my emotion regulation groups for kids w/ASD, Emotional Behavioral Disorders, & other health disabled. Can’t wait!

    • To learn how to better teach yoga to children with special needs

    • I have a two kids with autism. I will use this dvd to calm my kids in my personal opinon i love yoga because it help to calm and help to all the body to feel more relax. I’m looking for something to help my kids. Thank you so much for make this contest. God bless you!!!

  5. I am an Early HeadStart Program teacher – I work with disabled and under-privileged children between the ages of 6 weeks and 3 years. I am a 200RYT and am able to hold yoga therapy sessions with the children throughout the day on an individual basis and in a classroom setting. I would love to add true knowledge to what I know intuitively in my heart by learning from the expert Mary Flynn. While my day is filled with younger children than the educational program may be geared towards, yoga is so flexible, so universal! 🙂 I am also putting together a weekly class for older children with autism spectrum disorder. My background is horse-assisted therapy with a specialty with autism am currently loving kids from a classroom and would appreciate another experienced yoga teacher’s perspective, instruction, and advice. Please – the Peaceful Pathways Yoga DVD – Teacher Edition! Namaste.
