Childhood Apraxia of Speech and the Benefits of Guided Relaxation/Yoga – a guest blog post by Leslie Lindsay, R.N., B.S.N

Childhood Apraxia of Speech and the Benefits of Guided Relaxation/Yoga

By Leslie Lindsay, R.N., B.S.N.

When my daughter was in preschool, she came home with a CD that was intended to help kids transition from one activity to another.  It wasn’t your typical “Clean up” or “Good-bye” CD, either.  Dubbed as “The Calm Classroom,” this program is designed to help kiddos stop and take inventory of their body, their breathing, their proprioception (sense of body position and motion from joint and muscle receptors), and vestibular stimulation (sense of gravity and motion that comes from receptors of the inner ear) through simple yoga poses, focused listening, and breathing techniques.

Being the type of parent who is open to all things that would better my child—or myself as a parent—I was all about trying the new CD.  We popped it in the stereo in our family room at first, all four of us lying on the floor in effort to relax and focus.  My daughter, who suffers from childhood apraxia of speech (CAS)* and wasn’t speaking much—but understanding plenty—skipped to the track she liked best: environmental sounds.  The purpose of this track is to relax and focus on sounds in the environment such as a rushing train, frogs croaking, water dripping, and ____.  She loved this and soon we were all experiencing greater focus and relaxation.

But just why was The Calm Classroom so effective for my daughter?  And what does childhood apraxia have to do with it, anyway?  For those of you who aren’t familiar, CAS is a neurologically-based motor speech disorder.  Rooted in the brain, but expressing itself in the verbal communication (or lack thereof) of children, CAS is a complex disorder characterized by the inability to produce verbal sounds to form intelligible words.  Here is the definition offered by ASHA in 2007, “A neurological childhood (pediatric) speech sound disorder in which precision and consistency of movements underlying speech are impaired in the absence of neuromuscular deficits.”   In plain language, children with apraxia of speech want to speak, yet they just can’t coordinate their thoughts with their mouth.

In the exercises provided on the Calm Classroom CD, my daughter was able to become more self-aware.  She was able to make the brain-body connection that is so vital in a neurologically-based motor speech disorder.  Not only that, but some of the tracks require chanting or mantra style vocalizations (humming, buzzing), which is all a part of early communication.  And—there is a good deal of breath awareness in these exercises and any yoga practice.  Finally, the repetitive aspects of relaxation exercises and yoga poses are key: the body craves repetition to gain mastery over motor-based movement.  These very same principles can be applied to speech-language pathology, and specifically childhood apraxia (CAS).

If you feel like this is a path you would like to explore, look to see if your child’s speech clinic offers occupational therapy, sensory integration therapy, or yoga.  It really can be quite beneficial to children of all ages with all types of motor speech disorders.  Worst case scenario:  your child has tapped into a new coping strategy that may prove helpful for the future.

The Calm Classroom went into retirement for awhile at our house until just recently, when our now-7-year old daughter rediscovered it.  She suggests we join her in a type of relaxation class in which we all are all provided with a note card to collect punches–much as we would if we were taking a class at a health club.  Of course, this is all her design.  And this time around, she is speaking quite normally and will be in 2nd grade, “Come on!  Don’t you want to relax, mom and dad?!  It will do you some good.”  My husband and I just look at each other with that, oh-what-have-we-got-to-lose look and give in to her request.

And you know what, she was right.

*Childhood apraxia of Speech (CAS) is sometimes referred to as “developmental apraxia” in countries other than the U.S., and in the U.S. before 2007.

Bio:  Leslie Lindsay is former child/adolescent psych R.N. at the Mayo Clinic-Rochester.  She is the mother of two school-aged daughters and a basset hound, named Sally.  Lindsay and her family reside in the Chicago suburbs where she writes full-time.  She is the author of “Speaking of Apraxia: A Parents’ Guide to Childhood Apraxia of Speech” (Woodbine House, March 2012).  Read more on her blog, “Practical Parenting…with a Twist” where she writes about apraxia, parenting, education, and more 5 days a week, www.leslie4kids.wordpress.com

Information about The Calm Classroom:  For more information about the research-based Calm Classroom program mentioned in this article, please visit their website, http://calmclassroom.com.

Disclaimer:  The author has no professional affiliation with The Calm Classroom/Luster Learning.  This article is for information and entertainment purposes.  It is not meant to be a “cure” for Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS).  The most effective treatment for CAS is a multidisciplinary approach which encompasses motor, sensory, and speech work.  All children with CAS present in their own unique ways; not all will respond as positively to yoga or relaxation-type exercises.  The key is finding that perfect fit for your child.

Review & Giveaway: Audrey’s Journey – Loving Kindness by Kerry Alison Wekelo

Help kids explore the concept of “loving kindness” with this great new book!

This new book in the “Audrey’s Journey” series teaches kids the concept of offering love & happiness to themselves, to their family and to all living creatures. “May ___ be safe. May ___ be happy. May ___ be peaceful. May ___ be healthy. May ___ walk with love in ___ heart.”. The book is beautiful and I LOVE the concept of teaching kids to send loving kindness & positive thoughts….. however in the settings I work in I have to be very careful to avoid using words that convey any religious connotation. Folks here view “meditation” in that light. I will still use this book with the kids but will modify how I read it (by substituting “love”, “this” and “loving kindness” for “metta” and “meditation” ).

A sneek-peek inside the book:

Book Description

Audrey has a love for music and creating rhymes on her drum. When Audrey plays her drum she is filled with love and happiness. In this journey, Audrey envisions how Metta Meditation can help to spread love and kindness to all living things.

Kids Affirmation Cards & Custom Plush Creations from BSL Creations * Cuddle Wumkins & Daily Whisper Products

Check out these fun custom creations & kids affirmation cards from BSL Creations * Cuddle Wumkins & Daily Whisper Products!

I was looking for some ideas for kids affirmations a few weeks ago and ran across this old blog post from 2009: http://www.thesucculentwife.com/daily-whisper-nurturing-words-for-kids/.

After a little digging I found the company on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/BSLCreations. Love the power of social media…. after a few FB comments & e-mails my custom order was on its way 🙂 Love that I could pay via Paypal online & that the order arrived quickly.

Here are pics of my order:

I love the cute illustrations on both sides of the cards & that the affirmations are relevant/meaningful for kids.

It is especially nice to see affirmation cards that are not “goofy” (you know the kind that imply that you always win, everyone will always like you, the sun is always shining, etc….. It’s not fair or healthy to give kids the impression that nothing bad will ever happen or that the only feeling that is okay is “happy”).

The Daily Whisper cards include affirmations about choices kids have control over (ex: I am always nice to my friends. I am kind to myself. I choose kind words when I speak. I am kind to everyone in my family. I am kind to all living creatures. I am considerate of other people feelings. I help my parents with work around the house., etc….), affirmations relating to difficult situations kids commonly face (ex: I don’t let bullies bother me, if they do I tell an adult I can trust. I know that some kids won’t like me and that’s okay. It is okay to fail sometimes, that just means I need to learn more and try again. I can be angry without hurting people of things. , etc….), affirmations that inspire kids to work hard & have confidence (ex: I try my best and don’t give up. I am proud of who I am and all that I have learned. I stay focused on my projects. I enjoy learning new things. I can be great when I put my mind to it. I am confident in myself. I am patient with myself as I learn new things. etc….) and affirmations that inspire feelings of love (ex: I am loved and very loveable. I am very important to my family. I am happy to be me., etc….).

I used the plush star & cards during relaxation in OMazing Kids yoga with our inpatients at the JD McCarty Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities last week (where I work full-time as a Speech-Language Pathologist). I picked out cards that related to the story and activities we did in yoga that day. It’s important for affirmations to make sense & are more meaningful when used in context. The kids enjoyed practicing deep breathing with the star on their belly. Then each child took a card out of the pocket and read it aloud or I read it to them and they imitated saying it. Affirmations can be especially powerful for kids with special needs since they can often feel that something is wrong or needs to be “fixed” in them.

Available for purchase: http://www.etsy.com/listing/105242689/star-pillow-and-daily-whisper-cards-for

Affirmation Cards also available separately at: http://www.etsy.com/listing/97429411/inspirational-cards-for-kids

Here are a few pics of things she created for other kids yoga folks:

I like how large the eyes & rosy cheeks are on this star!

And love the idea of using a patterned fabric on the back! You can get them with or without a pocket, with or without a name, bundled with the affirmation cards or without the cards….. Lots of custom options…. you can e-mail Barbara to find out all the specifics: Barbara@bslcreations.com.

See lots of pics of her custom creations on her blog at: http://dailywhisperblog.blogspot.com/http://dailywhisperblog.blogspot.com/2012/08/yoga-for-kids.html

Her Etsy Shops: http://www.etsy.com/shop/DailyWhisper & http://www.etsy.com/shop/CuddleWumkins. Barbara is working on a website that will put everything together on one site….. so stay tuned on her blog & FB page for updates on that.

Disclaimer: I purchased the affirmation cards at full price. I received a small discount on the custom plush star.  Opinions expressed are my own.

Here’s what I love about this book & playset:

  • The beautiful rhyming words flow easily as you read this book outloud & inspire kids to think about all the gifts of nature and living creatures from forest, jungle, or sea that live in our world and a plea to take care of them.
  • The illustrations by Alexandra Ball are breathtaking! Really more works of art than just illustrations.
  • I love the gentleness of both the words & illustrations. Both evoke feelings of calmness & kindness. I love that the message of caring for the earth is done in a kid-friendly way.
  • The book & playset items are printed with soy ink.
  • The playset animals & trees are made of very thick, sturdy cardboard. The kids I work with tend to be very rough on things so I am planning on having the items preassembled when I use them. I wrote the name of the item on each base using a very fine-tip permanent market before I punched the items out to aide in easy assembly. The items have to be taken apart to fit back in the storage box.
  • The playset is wonderful to use to work on vocabulary, following directions, spatial concepts, adjectives, etc….

Here’s a “sneek peek” inside the book & playset:

UPDATE: Check out this post for a review of the new app version of this book: https://omazingkidsllc.com/2017/04/22/app-review-care-for-our-world-an-amazing-app-for-earth-day-or-any-day/

Since the theme of the book is all about kindness & caring it was really cool to be able to tell the kids how the illustrator shared these via e-mail all the way from the UK 🙂

Here is a 6-page PDF coloring booklet I put together with a cover, the illustrations above and kids kindness & peace pledges: care for our world coloring sheets and peace pledges – OMazing Kids

The kids LOVED coloring as part of relaxation at the Inclusive OMazing Kids Yoga Class at JDMC! It was the Monday following the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado so this book & coloring activity were a perfect way to share a message of peace & kindness 🙂
