Review & Giveaway: Kathryn the Grape books & CD

Kathryn the Grape Giveaway

Want to help kids understand that they are remarkable & powerful individuals? Kathryn the Grape books & music encourage kids to shine who they uniquely are and dwell joyfully in their own magnificence.

Through the award winning books & music of Kathryn the Grape, children learn important self-esteem building life lessons that affect change on their core level and inspire them to ripple loving kindness and compassion into the world.

Kathryn the Grape books

Just Like Magic: This book helps children learn about:

• Being fearless, courageous, and adventurous in trying new things.

• Accountability in doing the right thing and helping others.

• Discovering their own inner magic and using it for doing good things.

• Being friendly to someone who is lonely, and being open to making new friends.

Colorful Adventure: This book helps children learn about:

• What it feels like to trust themselves and their intuition.

• Respecting themselves by using their words to say how they feel.

• The colors and symbols associated with their chakras so they can shine in their uniqueness.

• How negative thoughts make everything gloomy, but loving thoughts make everything beautiful.

Piece of Love:  This book helps children learn about:

• Contributing their piece to creating peace.

• How their thoughts, words, and actions have a ripple effect.

• Being loving, kind, and accepting of themselves and others.

• Removing worried thoughts to be in the flow.

Here’s what I love about the books:

  • The books build on themselves so you get to see how Kathryn the Grape learns skills & becomes more empowered.
  • Each book includes practical strategies kids could use when facing real life situations (handling feeling nervous or worried, paying attention to who might need help around you, being a friend, being fearless, trying new things, being helpful, the ripple effect of kindness, etc…)
  • Love that affirmation & empowerment are the theme throughout the series of books.

Free printable coloring & activity pages to go with the books on their website!

Kathryn the Grape CD

Each song links to the first three books in the Kathryn the Grape Affirmation Series:

• In KTG Just Like Magic, you learn about being MAGICAL, and how to get rid of NERVOUS BUBBLES.

• In KTG’s Colorful Adventure, you learn how to shine COLORFUL YOU as MAGGIE leads the way.

• In KTG’s Piece of Love, you learn to BELIEVE that we are all love, and how to be IN THE FLOW.

• Everyone will enjoy dancing along to our KTG theme song titled, THE FRIENDSHIP SONG!

Here’s what I loved about the music:

  • The songs tie into each of the 3 books so they will be a great way to engage multiple senses in learning!
  • Love the unique lyrics & tunes…. so much fun!
  • Imagine the power of kids listening to tunes that will inspire greatness :)

Celebrate The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day with Kids Yoga

Celebrate Very Hungry Caterpillar Day

Celebrate The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day (1st day of Spring) on March 20th with kids yoga! This has always been one of my favorite books but I had struggled to come up with ideas on how to use it in kids yoga until I was inspired by the ideas shared by Yogaberries – yoga classes for children & families in Derby. in this discussion we had on the OMazing Kids Facebook page about great books to use in kids yoga. I added & modified several to use with the kids in OMazing Kids yoga at the JD McCarty Center. Here is the lesson plan we use:

  • crescent moon
  • egg (child’s pose)
  • caterpillar (group happy baby pose – lay side by side with arms & legs up and wiggling)
  • sun stretch & breath (http://wp.me/p1t7TU-1T , includes link to a video clip & free sun printables)
  • apple picking stretch (in easy pose stretch one arm up & across to “pick the apple”. Engage kids imagination by asking “What color is your apple?” Repeat on other side. For all of the “food” items you can use toy food items or copies of the story prop printables. Whether or not I do this depends on the kids I have in the group. Some kids get overstimulated with too many props & others need the props to keep their attention)
  • wiggle like caterpillars on tummy around the circle to the next mat to pick the next fruit (pears). Repeat for the rest of the fruits (plums, strawberries & oranges)
  • cake (we did a bake the cake sequence similar to what I used for baking a pie in Apple Farmer Annie)
  • ice cream scoops partner pose
  • pickle (tense face like eating a sour pickle & relax)
  • swiss cheese (gyan mudra at eyes to look through the holes)
  • salami (woodchopper pose to slice it)
  • lollipop (mountain pose like a staight lollipop stick)
  • pie (seated angle pose)
  • sausage (rock & roll on back like a plump sausage)
  • cupcake (blow out the candle breath. For safety, we do not use a real candle….. just pretend)
  • watermelon (triangle pose – like the shape of the watermelon slice)
  • leaf (tree pose)
  • big caterpillar (use Hoberman sphere or hands with Balloon Breath to show the caterpillar getting bigger & bigger)
  • cocoon (roll up each child in their mat for Savasana – Note: it’s important to ask each child’s permission & be mindful of their sensory needs when doing this)
  • butterfly + affirmation “I am beautiful!”
  • could also do some butterfly breathing during Savasana with this prop (or a butterfly beanie baby or small stuffed animal). Place it on the child’s belly so they can watch it “fly” up and down slowly with their breath. (see pic of prop in this album on Facebook: http://tinyurl.com/cl8v7wo)
  • for added fun, have colored scarves and explore “flying” fast and slow using the scarves as butterfly wings.

The Imaginations: Fun Relaxation Stories and Meditations for Kids book has a fabulous “If I Could Fly” guided relaxation story that could easily be modified to fit a butterfly relaxation.

Healthy Eating tunes: Fabulous free tunes from the Eat Like A Rainbow CD by Jay Mankita. My faves are Eat Like A Rainbow, My Food Is Made From Sunshine & Sun, Wind, Soil, And Rain. This award-winning 10 song children’s album about healthy fruits and vegetables is a great teaching tool for kids and families, and is free to download from this site. The songs were originally commissioned by a grant for a joint project of the NY Coalition for Healthy School Food, and the NYC Board of Education (Dept of School Foods): http://eat-like-a-rainbow.bandcamp.com/.

More fun ideas for Very Hungry Caterpillar songs!

Tangerine with segments on a white background

When we do Very Hungry Caterpillar yoga this year I will be adding a fun fruit mindfulness activity.

  • Have a real piece of fruit for each child (Note: it’s important to know about any food allergies or dietary restrictions before using food in kids yoga. We will be using small seedless clementines for their “kid-friendly” size. Young kids may not be familiar with the word “clementine” so I will call it an “orange”).
  • Hold the orange in your hands with your eyes open. Look at the orange. Is it big or small? What color is it? Does it have any other colors or spots?
  • Close your eyes. Hold the orange up to your nose. How does it smell?
  • Feel the orange in your hands. Is it heavy or light? Is it bumpy or smooth?
  • Hold the orange in your lap. Imagine the tiny orange seed in the ground.  Imagine the sunshine that helped the orange to grow on the tree. How does the sunshine feel? Imagine the rain as it fell. How does the rain feel? Imagine the tree where this orange grew. How tall was the tree?
  • Imagine all the energy that went into this orange. Imagine the farmer who took care of the orange trees. Imagine all the workers who picked the oranges, who delivered them to the store and who work in the store where we bought the oranges.
  • Open your eyes and look at your orange again. Can we eat it like this or do we need to take off the outside peel?
  • Let’s take the peel off. And peel off a small orange wedge. (Note: be mindful of kids sensory issues when doing this. Some kids may be hesitant to touch the fruit unpeeled and may prefer to watch. After you unpeel the clementine you can put it in a small ziploc bag or bowl if needed for kids who would be more comfortable experiencing it that way).
  • Take a small bite. How does the orange taste? Cool? Sweet? Juicy?
  • Close your eyes and take another small bite of orange. Listen to the sound it makes as you chew it in your mouth.
  • Take your time. Be curious about this orange and how it is feeling as you eat it.

(adapted from a fruit meditation I learned as part of the fabulous Calm Kids online course I took)

Very Hungry Caterpillar story props and PECS activity

I made story props so kids can interact with the story and experience making the caterpillar eat “through” all the food items. I also created picture symbols to use in a Picture Exchange Communication (PECS) activity or as Aided Language Stimulation. The kids I work with benefit from tapping into those many different learning styles and kids with Autism in particular do well with having visuals to go with a book. BIGmack Very Hungry Caterpillar

Kids LOVE filling in the repeated line “But he was still ________ (hungry)”! I always have a BIGmack or other single message voice output communication aide available for kids who have limited verbal skills to be able to participate. I record the repeated line & they “say” it by pushing the button with their hand, foot, head, etc…..

In addition to the therapeutic yoga group, I also teach a weekly adapted storytime at the JD McCarty Center. One of our current inpatients is deaf so I am brushing up on my sign language so I can sign key words in the story. Here are a few signs for this story:

Big A, little a – A Dr. Seuss ABC’s alphabet extravaganza (kids yoga & early literacy)

Dr. Seuss ABC OMazing Kids Yoga lesson plan

Combining early literacy activities with movement, music, art, props & games with can create fun learning opportunities to engage all the senses. Many kids with special needs have an especially difficult time with even basic early literacy skills and often may not enjoy sitting still for a traditional “storytime”.  Dr. Seuss would have loved kids yoga and most of the kids I work with LOVE his books! The creativity & uniqueness of his characters, the wacky rhyming text, great repeated lines, the messages of nature conservation, peace & equality, and all the fun…fun…fun! Dr. Seuss books & characters are a wonderful inspiration for kids yoga class activities!

Kids yoga opportunities in Dr. Seuss’ ABC:

  • Alligator (after doing “alligator pose”, use alligator plush as “alligator on a rock” on child’s back in child’s pose or let the alligator swim on the breath on child’s belly)
  • Baby, bubble blowing breathwork, buzzing bee breath
  • Camel
  • Dog
  • Elephant
  • Feather breathwork
  • Goat, goggles (gyan mudra “glasses” at eyes)
  • Horse, hooray (affirmation cards)
  • I am happy, I am good (I like this all English version from Zensational Kids: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMHbg4ArfeY)
  • Jelly wiggle, jar of jam (stir the pot),
  • Kitten (cat), kangaroo hops, kite, kerchoo (sneezing breath)
  • Legs (seated forward fold), lion
  • Mouse, moon
  • Nose (alternate nostril breathing)
  • Ostrich (standing forward fold – like ostrich hiding head in sand), owl
  • Paint the pajamas (use paintbrush bulletin board cutouts as props)
  • Queen (lotus mudra to make crown on head), quacking (duck)
  • Rhinoceros
  • Sipping sodas (sitali breath)
  • Turtle, tree
  • Umbrella (standing star – like a wide open umbrella, with wiggling fingers as raindrops falling)
  • Violin (rock the baby – leg is like the bow playing the violin)
  • Washer
  • X – words that end in “X” – ax (woodchopper), fox (gyan mudra around nose)
  • Yawning, yak
  • Zizzer-Zazzer-Zuzz (group pose – kids lay down to form a letter “Z”; also could make up a pose)

See & hear the book being sung in this YouTube video:

We also did a phonemic awareness sort, color & paste activity. I found this activity on Seussville.com and then modified it to meet our kids needs. Many of our kids at JDMC do better when given some choices rather than the open ended nature of this worksheet. Often when given a few pictured choices they then can think of other things to draw that start with that letter. Using Boardmaker, I made 5 picture symbols for words that start with “A” and 5 that start with “B”. After using it I tweaked it a bit (took off “ant” since it also looked like “bugs”…. a “B” word. And added a What begins with “A” sheet since two of the kids with Autism were having a difficult time with not having a specific spot to paste the “A” words. In that moment, we did a mini-lesson on problem solving and thinking of options. We were able to draw an “A” on the back of the “B” worksheet to be able to move on :) )

I purchased my copy of the book & the plush alligator at Kohl’s. Dr. Seuss is part of their current “Kohl’s Cares” line. Large hardcover books and plush toys are a bargain at only $5.00 each & the proceeds go to great causes (what not to love about that?):

If you have been following my blog, Facebook page & other social media pages for any length of time, you know that I love & own hundreds of kids picture books. I have several other Dr. Seuss “faves” that I have posted lesson plans for: Green Eggs & Ham, My Many Colored Days & How the Grinch Stole Christmas!. Last year I was inspired to create “The Yoga of Dr. Seuss” a 3-page PDF printable  of 36 Dr. Seuss inspired kids yoga activities (including poses, breathing, games, affirmations, yamas/niyamas & relaxation) to celebrate his birthday. I’ve always loved Dr. Seuss & have fond memories of reading his books as a child. Now it’s fun to find new creative ways to help kids enjoy his work as well :)

Review & Giveaway: Calm Kids – Help Children Relax with Mindful Activities book & Level 1 online course

Calm Kids book and online course

Want to learn how to teach mindfulness, meditation & relaxation to kids of all ages? Want to help the kids in your life or the kids you work with learn skills to manage stress? The Calm Kids – Help Children Relax with Mindful Activities book & Level 1 online course are wonderful resources & provide a wealth of information!

Book:  (Publication Date: March 1, 2012 | ISBN-10: 0863158625 | ISBN-13: 978-0863158629, paperback, 153 pages). Mindfulness and meditation can help children recognize and cope with tension and stress throughout their lives. In this practical and inspiring book, Lorraine Murray explains a variety of different approaches including: meditations around daily activities for busy families, ideas for group ‘quietness’ sessions in schools, fun & tactile rhymes for toddlers to help them calm down before bedtime, ways to help teenagers reduce anxiety, grounding and balancing for children with ADHD, calming suggestions for children with autism spectrum disorders. This book is ideal for teachers, parents and youth workers; for complete beginners or those with experience in relaxation and meditation techniques. It offers advise needed to lead sessions with children, helping them feel calmer, happier and more peaceful.

Calm Kids TOC

The book is available through their websitethe publisher, Amazon and other online book sellers. I purchased my copy when it was first released on Amazon.com in the USA in March 2012 (http://www.amazon.com/Calm-Kids-Children-Mindful-Activities/dp/0863158625), read it cover to cover within a couple of days & have been using the concepts & techniques in my OMazing Kids inclusive kids yoga classes & the therapeutic kids yoga group at the JD McCarty Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities for the past 11 months.

Here’s what I love about the book:

  • great info about causes of stress & stress in kids
  • practical benefits & strategies
  • easy to understand information about the concept of being “grounded & centered”
  • lots of sample guided imagery, meditation & relaxation scripts are included for a variety of age levels
  • great tips on learning how to write your own scripts, transitioning to using trigger words (instead of relying on a script) & finally developing your own “inner script”
  • specific tips on working with different age groups [babies/caregiver, toddlers young kids (4-6), older kids (7-12), and teenagers to young adults (12+)]
  • the very simple script examples in the chapters on babies & toddlers have been especially helpful as ideas for the kids I work with at JDMC who have a variety of special needs and often have significant developmental delays, cognitive impairments & short attention spans.
  • the chapter on ADHD has great charts listing symptoms of hyperactivity – impulsiveness – inattention, symptoms of the center of imbalance (being “ungrounded”) and grounding/balancing activities. It also includes several case studies & info about mudras.
  • the chapter on Autism has an in-depth case study and several tips. (FYI…. Lorraine recently announced on her Facebook page that she is working on a second book and that it will be specifically about teaching meditation to children with special needs and/or who have been diagnosed with ADD, ADHD or Autism. See details on her blog: http://www.teachchildrenmeditation.com/?cat=-0)

Online Course: The online course covers everything (and more) which Lorraine teaches in her level 1 Calm Kids course. The course includes 5 modules which help bring the Calm Kids book to life! The online course costs £99 and includes a copy of the book ‘Calm Kids’.

Module 1 – What is Meditation

Module 2 – Writing Meditations

Module 3 – How to Deliver a Meditation

Module 4 – Developing your Mediation Ideas

Module 5 – Sharing the Experience

See in-depth info, including samples & an online currency converter to calculate the course cost outside the UK on their website: http://www.teachchildrenmeditation.com/calmkids-online-course/

Calm Kids level 1 online course

Calm Kids level 1 - info

finished calm kids online course

Here’s what I loved about the online course:

  • it brought the concepts in the book to life through lots of video clips & mp3’s. The mp3’s provided great examples of vocal tone & pacing to use in guided relaxation.
  • it especially brought home the concept of going through the creative process of learning how to write guided relaxation scripts, then going to trigger words & taking the leap into going “script-free” by developing my “inner script”. This concept was covered in the book but somehow clicked for me after having it presented via video & mp’s examples in the online training.
  • Lorraine was so encouraging in her online video clips. Each step of the way she was complimenting you for what you had accomplished & encouraged you to keep going. Her passion for the work she is doing shines through!
  • it is divided into small, very manageable segments which was great to be able to do it in small increments. Anyone who works full time and has family commitments will appreciate this. It took me a total of about 5 hours to do the online course but I did it is several small segments. There is homework & practice activities to do in each module. So take your time in doing the course. Many folks do it spread over a 5 week period….. but the beauty of an online course is that you can go at a pace that works for you & your schedule :)
  • the site is very easy to navigate, easy to log in and out of, it resumes where you left off when you log back in & you can review previous segments as many times as you would like.
  • I tried it out on two different web browsers on my home computer (Internet Explorer & Google Chrome). It worked on both but looked better on Google Chrome so I used that for completing the course.

Perfect Square: a perfect book for kids yoga

perfect square cover with OMazing Kids logo

One square. Unlimited possibilities. One bright red square starts out perfectly happy. But then something happens. On Monday, the square turns orange, gets cut up and punched with holes. Though no longer a perfect square, it transforms into something just as wonderful…a babbling, giggling, clapping fountain. On Tuesday, the square (now yellow), gets torn into pieces and turns into a garden. Each day of the week, Perfect Square turns a different color & its “perfectness” is disrupted and each day it creatively turns itself into something new and different. On the last day, nothing happens to Perfect Square. It waits and waits. I LOVE that instead of waiting any longer for something else to change it, it changes itself!

If you have been following my blog, Facebook page & other social media pages for any length of time, you know that I love & own hundreds of kids picture books. There are lots of “good” books & then there are a few “great” books….. like Green Eggs & Ham with it’s message of trying new things, exploring feelings with Dr. Seuss’ My Many Colored Days, the creativity of Not a Box, the sensory extravaganza & fun of being made into a pizza in Pete’s a Pizza,  affirmation & the power of friendship in Agate, What Good is a Moose?, etc.

Perfect Square falls into the “great” category for the following reasons:

  • includes lots of early learning concepts (colors, shapes, days of the week)
  • large, easy to read text
  • lots of great vocabulary, descriptive language & action words
  • fosters creativity
  • lots of opportunities for kids yoga
  • has a great empowering messages of taking life’s “unperfectness” and making your own beauty out of it & the beauty of thinking outside the “box”.

Kids yoga opportunities in this book:

  • fountain (volcano and/or waterfall)
  • bird
  • flower
  • kite
  • bridge
  • river (seated forward fold)
  • fish (* for safety reasons I often do easy pose + a mudra of the sign for “fish” rather than the traditional “fish” pose)
  • mountain
  • window (could either do a group pose to create a window or could do star pose to make arms & legs like the windowpane divider)
  • the book then repeats back through all the previous items which gives kids great practice to repeat the poses they had just learned

Here’s what I liked about these products:

  • I tried out the purple mat in my therapeutic OMazing Kids yoga group at the JD McCarty Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities. Since I only had one of the mats and a group of 4 young boys, I used the mat as a special surprise towards the end of the group. Each child got to take turns getting on the mat, pointing to one of the pose pics and then we all did that pose. This worked GREAT for this group of young boys who had varying disabilities, communication challenges & some behavior issues. The mat provided a way for them to communicate a choice without the risk of yoga cards being damaged (if you work with kids with special needs or behavior challenges you have probably experienced the loss of precious yoga cards). One of the young boys was having a particularly rough day and using the Lazy Lizards mat was the best part of the class for him. He giggled & smiled as we all became “frogs” after he pointed to that pic on the mat.
  • I like that the mat is eco-friendly, closed cell construction, has rounded corners & is thick enough to provide a little extra cushion.
  • I like that the pics on the mat are large and that there are only 12 poses on the mat. When a couple of the young boys in our class were unable to make a choice out of a field of 12, I gave them a choice of 2 poses that were next to each other on the mat.
  • It’s nice to be able to turn the mat over to a plain solid side for kids who might be overwhelmed by the visual stimulation of all the pose pics. Or those who might take it literally that they can only do those poses or do those poses in that order on the mat (you will be able to relate to this if you work with kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders or other special needs).
  • I liked the playful nature of the DVD and that it showed a realistic depiction of what a yoga class for young kids looks like. Kids were allowed to participate & enjoy the class at their level. While the DVD is marketed for ages 3+, based on my experience I would suggest that it would be most appealing to young kids (ages 3-7). My favorite parts of the DVD were the seed-to-flower & making a slice of pizza sequences.

Other thoughts: While the music in the background of the DVD was usually pleasant, at times it made it difficult to hear the yoga instructor. This also could be overstimulating or make it difficult for kids with Sensory Processing Disorder, Autism, Central Auditory Processing problems or other special needs. Two of the poses may be a little confusing to kids who some experience with yoga: tree (is really more like mountain with arms lifted) & flamingo (is what tree pose traditionally looks like).
